DAN THE MAN

02.2.12

What’s your name (optional) and/or your Midnight Ridazz log-in name?
Dan Barr. Dan the Man.

How did you first hear about Midnight Ridazz and what was your first group bike ride?Haloween 2009, I was riding around old town Pasadena in costume, spooking crowds at the corners... Someone yelled "MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ" at me. My inquisitive mind took note, and through curious research I found the website. I'm fairly sure my first ride was either 626 raccoons or DMSR...

Currently what rides do you attend regularly and what ride(s) would you like to see make a comeback?
I try to ride as many different rides as I can, I enjoy both the party rides and the not-party rides. The regular rides that I try not to miss are the Spoke n' Art ride, Cyclones, RWNN, and 2nd Fridays. I have started doing T.R.F.K.A.S. and Bicykillers which are good fast group rides with strong people. Most of the rides I have been with are still around, for better or for worse.

What advice would you pass on to new ridazz?
Make new friends. Even if you can't remember their names. Introduce yourself to new people during every ride, and make sure to say hi to people who you recognize. Show respect where respect is given. Don't be a mooch. Don't crash into people. Don't fuck it up for the rest of us!

If you were leading a group ride, what would you do differently?
Have short stops, not drawn out chillfests. Going on a ride means riding, not posting up in one spot for hours and hours.

Do you prefer small rides (30 or less people) or larger rides and why?
It depends on the overall vibe of the ride. Faster rides tend to be better in groups of 30 or less, moseys and theme rides are better with large numbers 300 or more. I enjoy both for different reasons.

Tell us about the best and worst experience you’ve encountered on a group ride.
Best experience is the sense of accomplishment when all riders finish the ride together, everyone has enjoyed themselves, and the feeling of overwhelming community and camaraderie that occurs between those that made a clear effort to do something together. Worst experience is when the ride falls apart, people get their shit stolen, fucked with by cops, injured, or other various dramas that could have been avoided with clarity and forethought.

What did you do for fun before you started “riding”?
I was a cave dwelling couch potato who played video games all day and all night! And I had alot less friends.

What’s the best and worst thing group bike rides have done for cycling as a whole in Los Angeles?
I think the best thing, and many people feel the same way, is that it has gotten people to get outside of their comfort zones and really explore their surroundings. It instills in people a confidence that they might not have realized any other way. It incites curiuosity and a sense of adventure. In a city that has been ruled by the confining presence of the automobile people are starting to realize that the bicycle is a viable option for not only transportation but as a social outlet.

Worst thing? It has caused serious injuries, unwanted negative bias, and animosity toward cyclists. Then again, I feel that the pros far outweigh the cons.

If you can name 1 person who embodies the spirit of “Midnight Ridazz”, Who would it be and Why?
Roadblock. He has the strongest reputation in the community. People respect him and venerate him. His actions be it advocacy, encouraging the ridazz, and simply his presence on rides and events are what commands this reputation. He's a friendly guy! And he's pretty easy to spot in a crowd.

What do you think the public’s perception is of group bike rides?
People are annoyed with our presence, some view large group rides as a nuisance... Unfortunately. Others though, cheer us on! It's a mixed bag.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Keep the rubber side down. Viva Midnight Ridazz.
