RIDAZZ BUS
Thread started by SKIDMARCUS at 03.18.08 - 11:16 am

I OWN THIS 40 FOOT LONG BUS.
THIS IS NOT A DREAM.
YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THIS.

I purchased this bus with the intentions of living in it while converting it to an RV and reselling it before my trip. My plans have changed and now I would like to propose that this bus becomes the

OFFICIAL MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ TOURBUS

THIS IS NOT A DREAM.
YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THIS.

I imagine enough Ridazz have now gone to Las Vegas, Portland, San Francisco, Salton Sea, San Diego, and potentially Austin that the desire for such a venture is here.

THIS IS NOT A DREAM.
YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THIS.

Its a 1991 GMC RTS 40ft long retired city bus. It has 380K miles on the body, but less than 50K on the engine and transmission. It runs flawlessly. The engine is a 7.4 Detroit Diesel.

I am selling it for $6000 but for Ridazz I will sell for $5500 in a heartbeat. I propose that the ownership be as follows:

X-number of Ridazz each throw down enough X-$$$ to collectively purchase it for $5500 from me. The terms of the ownership are up to the Ridazz involved.

Before we get into this, I would like to gauge the interest in this venture. Discuss below if you are interested.

Maybe instead of row-seating, perhaps seats situated alongside the windows(backs to the windows) would be a viable idea.
Another thing to think about would be the DOT requirements this thing would need.
Since it's not being used for public, or private revenue generation, a passenger endorsement isn't necessary.
Although a class-A, non-commercial might be required for operation on public roads.
My license supersedes most of those requirements, so if an operator's needed, I'm up.

Is there a bike rack big enough for this?

User1

We need 55 peeps x $100 or
11 peeps x $500 or
5.5 peeps x $1,000

I'm in for any of the above but I don't want to own it.
This thing probably needs at least 5K-15K year in insurance & maintenance.

Or srsly Marcus if this bus needs too much work do you think it's better if you sell it to someone else and we look for another? Or maybe a small fleet of vans? Each bike gang responsible for their own van.

personally i like the idea of a fleet of vans, if we could make the bus work that would be amazing, but the costs/logistics of a 40ft bus seem a little intense...

AWESOME good response, and good questions.

I will try to outline the issues with this venture.

1_BUILD TO SUIT
I am part of an architecture collective called SMASHarchitecture. We have been gauging the interest and gathering outside proposals for what we can do with this project. We are keeping the bus available with the intentions of building to suit. Thus, the interior of the bus is completely gutted and ready to build into. It could be built to an RV, a solar fortress, a love den, an indoor garden, a burning relic on a ridazz trip, a concrete floored campground. The bus is a rolling steel shell. *DEFINITELY account for more money to be involved when we build this to suit the Ridazz needs.

2_RV vs CLASS A
The best part of this deal is that a bus can be officially considered an RV. it actually has RV plates on it now. This is an easy option for us, becuase all the DMV accounts for as an RV is a bed and a bathroom! After that its time to rock. The benefit is huge, in that you gain all advantages of it being an RV:
-NO CLASS A LICENSE REQUIRED TO DRIVE IT.
-INSURANCE IS SAME RATE AS AN RV.
-PARKING IS SAME AS AN RV.

3_PARKING
The storage of the bus is an issue. It cannot be parked on the street in the city of LA until it is considered an RV. I am paying $100 / month to store it safely in a private lot in the Valley. Not a big deal, but a deal nonetheless.

4_OWNERSHIP / MAINTENANCE
This is of course completely up to invested Ridazz. Whatever you want.

PERSONALLY
The Ridazz Bus is def one of the more interesting proposals to me of all of the ones we are reviewing. It is my personal hope that it will happen. I would offer my design team to be heavily involved in the design AND construction of the bus, whatever happens. We have preliminary schemes on all of our proposals, and I would be super happy to share when the time is right. I am writing all of this to gauge the interest of everyone. More can be explained as it comes up, but this is a good start.

RE: 1_BUILT TO SUIT: I don't really get what you are saying.. If we all agree to make it a MR Bus we have to wait until SMASH Collective does it's thing to it? Or are you saying it will make additional modifications if we include it in the price?

All I want to know is - When is it ready for us to have?

OR - What Roadblock said: Can we just rent it from you?
It would pay for itself that way, no? (Parking, Interior design, and maintenance)

RE_BUILD TO SUIT:
NOTE: The bus is not currently Rida-ready. I said above, the number above would get the project to the Ridazz as is. A good floor, a bathroom, maybe a kitchenette, title, insurance, will bring it above $5500. Please just be aware of this.

RE_RENTABILITY:
We will need to do more research on issues like insurance, liabilities of ownership, interior design, and finances, but we are definitely considering the possibilty of building it as The Ridazz Bus. It would be built to the Ridazz needs. We would rent it per trip. We have to logistically determine what it takes to do this, and what it would cost to the Ridazz, but we are seriously researching this possibilty.

I am pursuing this as a serious project and I do welcome all input. THANKS!

With about 50 "sponsors" for the bus you can set up a monthly automatic cc charge of about $3.00 each to cover all expenses... parking, etc.

Those 50 sponsors get first dibs on seats for any trips. Gas could partly come out of expense account (from the $3.00 charges). If the bus wasn't filled by sponsors, we could sell passage space with those funds going back into the expense account.

Or, we can say, screw this bus idea and do what we've always done.

That's always a choice.

indigis
03.18.08 - 3:03 pm

reply

I currently support the rental idea. (We'd probably save more money in the long run than we would if we rented from a normal bus rental service.)

I also like Indigis's idea about 50 sponsor privileges.

Let's keep the ideas rolling, but stay realistic. More Ridazz Road Trips! Uniting Bicycle Culture!

I'm in for a $100... this is sounding like a coop bike thing. If we're to do it. Have it restored really nice inside, add potties, etc. we easily could rent it out. The $100 dollars + monthly fees are easily shares. If we start renting it out, if it's cool enough. We could quickly get our monies back, and expand the project... oh shit...

As I said at Tren Way last week (gotta skip out this week, folks. Bummed!) I'm fairly willing to pay for the bus outright an make it available for ridazz events, but I wouldn't then be able to afford the interior revamping. But if the ridazz can put together a plan for the interior and the funding for that effort, I can come up with $5500 for the bus itself. Of course, all this is dependent upon what it'll cost me to insure the thing for the use we have intended for it and the ridazz being willing to fund the interior mods of a privately owned bus. Otherwise, I'm in for a couple hundred on the communal ownership thing.

We probably ought to figure out the set of things we'd like to accomodate in the interior and then let our architecture collective do the heavy lifting of a design to meet our criteria.

Things to consider

  • How many to accomodate seated
  • How many to accomodate sleeping
  • How much storage space
  • fridge?
  • microwave?
  • kegerator?
  • booths with tables?
  • media server/arcade video game emulator (mame)
  • sound system
  • aux power system, charges off alternator or generator when parked
  • external lighting
  • storage for folding tables and camping kitchen

If we can come up with a set of requirements, I'm sure the architects can come up with a design, assuming our requirements are reasonable, and then we can all pitch in on costs and labour to get it built.

Oh...I keep forgetting about using the Architect collective to "create" the required space within AND outside of the vehicle. I'd want to leave all that up to them, it would be created with an objective eye, and something they will want to "showcase". Which would make the whole project "marketable" for renting, etc. I'm totally talking about aesthetics...

A minimum requirement would it would have to accommodate and equal amount of bikes per passengers & driver(s). Plus their "stuff". We would also leave that design to the Architect collective.

I say we, as a collective, try to put together some sort of business plan, and see if we can do this!

We have to also figure out how many people we can FIT in the thing, especially if we are going to include a Kitchen & Potty. What are the minimum requirements for RV status again?

I can guarantee that once those are built, the numbers MAX will be a lot smaller than 50. I'm already thinking somewhere like 20-30. Green Tortoise buses are good examples of what a reasonable layout would look-like and fit: http://www.greentortoise.com/bus.charters.html I bet we could get a lot of price info from Green Tortoise.

So I'm sure the prices initial price will be much more that a $100 per person... It's looking more like $200 - $500... Which, in reality, is not that bad of an investment. It's really all about the business plan, and figuring out how much money we can make a month if we rent it out when we're not using it.

So, yeah. This IS some complicated shit.

Jared, what do you need? Annual or Monthly Costs broken down, etc...? Plus projected rental income, etc. I'm assuming we'd do all this shit as a not-for-profit (more to the initial costs...)

Also, keeping in mind we're not investing into this to make a zillion bucks. We're investing into this, as a GIFT, to benefit and supplement the F.U.N. that we already enjoy being part of Midnight Ridazz. Throwing down a couple thousand bucks, a year, into a bus, that will be used to haul my ass across the country for nothing but F.U.N. & Adventure sounds like a deal to me. It's probably a TON cheaper than what people pay for in time-shares. It's probably a TON cheaper than an Ocean Cruise. And an I.N.F.I.N.I.T.E. times more F.U.N.

That is what I see in this opportunity.

I would need to know who will be running this from the top down aka company breakdown, management summary, personnel plan, Initial investment, running costs, work closely with the build out team, marketing plan, objectives, mission, strategy and implementation, etc. for starters.

Then i could figure out a phase deployment layout, identify the mechanical sections, break-even and do all the financials along with an operational plan/survey so if someone wants to take charge and spearhead this, i can definitely assist by lending my knowledge and skills.

be forewarned, the planning is a project all in itself and would probably take more time (if done correctly) to build the bus itself. most of the work is research.

I doubt we can count much on rental income. Unless we do up the interior as some kind of showcase, using the kinds of tech they use on boats, its always gonna be more of a party bus than an RV, which means it is only going to be in demand for the same events we want to take it to (Coachella, Burning Man, etc). I wouldn't count on a whole lot of rental income. Maybe enough to cover the parking fees on occasion.

Personally, I think it'll be more entertaining if it is more of an RV than a bus. Transporting people doesn't seem much of a problem for the group, and a decent design should accomodate a fair number of seated passengers, even if it doesn't sleep all that many people inside. Honestly, having spent a summer touring the country in a harvester school bus back in my college days, I can tell you that the funk factor gets pretty high when you've got a lot of people sleeping in a small space, anyway, especially when they don't have regular access to a shower. If it sleeps 8-10 in beds with floorspace for a few more, and can store tents and camping gear for another 10, then I'm sure we can figure out a convertible space that can accommodate 25 folks during the actual driving. Given that the seats are not likely to be near as comfy as the seats in a regular car, you have to provide more room for each seated person to move around a bit more. Trips would be miserable if we were all just sitting in pairs like in a regular school bus. I'd think 25 is the upper limit for a trip of any significant length, and 20 will be a whole lot more manageable.

Given that 20% of donors will probably always be missing on any given trip, shooting for 25 donors who can each kick in something like $400, even if that is done in installments, is probably the way to go. That provides enough cash for the purchase, the renovation, and enough labour to get the job done swiftly. That leaves everyone also committed to a $4/month parking fee plus their share of the insurance, which shouldn't run too much more than $10 each, I'd bet. So to do it that way, we are looking at a $200 up front contribution followed by another $200 over the next couple of months, plus something like $15/month on maintenance plus your share of fuel on any trip you participate in. Its certainly not a trivial commitment, but not completely out of hand, either. If you ignore the $400 up front, $15/month for a share in an RV ain't bad at all.

Then assume that the bus is simply the lead vehicle and large cargo transporter in any MR caravan.

as much as you would like to see that without the hassle of execs etc. its better to shelter everyone under a corporation and have the bus be owned by it so we can reap the benefits insurances, fueling card programs, limited liability aka if there is an accident that is our fault let the corp be sued and have us fold it instead of having some jackass sue me and everyone else personally for our assets. there are a slew of other benefits to capitalize on.

an 501c3 takes forever to be formed and approved whereas an LLC, S Corp, or C-Corp can be expedited.

the coop sould be ownership shares in the created entity imo. i strongly advise going this route.

So, as for now, SMASH is really excited to design the Midnight Ridazz Bus, hopefully a fleet of them. We are not at all opposed to renting it, selling it outright, or co-op selling it. All three are options we are entertaining.

All I want of this project is to:
1) Make sure we have this bus rocking, as smoothly as possible.
2) Use Ridazz' talents to make this project the best it can be. This includes using the services of SMASHarchitecture.
3) I want a spot!

The design for Ridazz is preliminary, but I can tell you this. Before we get to bells and whistles, our design goals are:
1) Maximize the # of Ridazz as passengers.
2) Maximize the # of Ridazz seating / bike-storage / pack-storage / and lodging on-board.
3) Stages of construction. Is this a barebones bus for every trip? Does it change each time, as Ridazz begin to contribute? We are going to be considering these questions in the design phase.

Of concern now is: would you like to see it? Can the Ridazz on this thread narrow down the methods of ownership? Should we set up a meeting for this? Next week any day except Thursday after 7pm is good for me.

At any rate, this is going to be mind-blowing project and really be something special for us. I am giving my all to it in any way I can, professionally and as an F.U.N. representative.

Bicycle Kitchen is a cooperative. Bike Oven is a cooperative. The whole ECO Village, and most living cooperatives are just that. Cooperatives, NOT corporations. I don't count on accidents and being sued, though we all know those things happen. Every time we carpool and caravan, there are liabilities that we will have to accept, and responsibilities we have to own. It wouldn't be any different for a Bus or RV. It really wouldn't. But AS I HAVE SAID - I'm not directly opposed to it being part of a corporate entity. I want to open the conversation of WHAT TYPE of entity this would be. And I'm in favor of a cooperative. @Dak,
The he is king and the other is vice king was just away to state my agreement with them. I didn't think anyone would take it literal or as a "mindless Hurrah Hurrah bullshit", much less someone like you. The Kitchen, Oven and Wave are cooperatives, but they are quite abit different than a rolling bus. A rolling bus presents quite a bit more of a liability and all it takes is one accident for this house of cards to fall if this bus is handled as a cooperative ownership. I am open to dicussing what this ownership should look like too. Telling people to shut up does nothing to advance this issue.

We run the risk of having accidents and being sued when we do drive in a caravan. We have insurance to minimize this in the event of this happening. When you multiply this by 50+, it makes everyone liable for the actions of one person. You'll have a hard time getting most on board if this is the case. Good luck forwarding this if it's not setup as a corporation.

http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/2008/03/05/82-hating-corporations/

One of the more popular white person activities of the past fifteen years is attempting to educate others on the evils of multi-national corporations. White people love nothing more than explaining to you how Wal*Mart, McDonalds, Microsoft, Halliburton are destroying the Earth’s culture and resources.

While the growth of multi-national corporations can be attributed to a number of complex social, economic and political factors, many white people prefer to take the word of two trusted sources: No Logo and AdBusters.

Published in 2000, No Logo has been responsible for more white person “enlightenment” than any book since the burning of the library at Alexandria. By reading this one magic book, white people are able to get a full grasp on the evils of multi-national corporations and then regurgitate it to friends and family.

Advanced white people will supplement No Logo with a subscription to AdBusters, where they will learn how to subvert corporate culture and return it to the masses. Specifically, this means taking ads and redoing them to give a negative message about a product. Apparently the belief is that when other people see this ad, they will be hit with an epiphany that their entire existence has been a Matrix-style manufactured universe.

If you plan to engage in lengthy conversations or get high with white people it is recommended that you read No Logo or one issue of AdBusters. Failing that, it is acceptable to buy a copy to leave on your coffee table. When white people see it, they will recognize you as someone who can see through the advertising and has a proper perspective on life.

When engaging in a conversation about corporate evils it is important to NEVER, EVER mention Apple Computers, Target or Ikea in the same breath as the companies mentioned earlier. White people prefer to hate corporations that don’t make stuff that they like.

Following these simple steps can help you gain the trust and respect of white people in a relatively short period of time.

it is unfair to everyone reading this, to mention No Logo and not mention the author Naomi Klein. Just put her name in the search engine, and come up with her insightful articles, and other books.

She is a real blessing, in the effort to save ourselves from ourselves.

I read her latest book "The Shock Doctrine" and can only say, SCARY.

She figured out how the modern empire worked (not that other have uncovered this info before her, but she tied it all together economically) to over take people, and countries and turn them into slaves. Be warned, all the ways they do this is happening right now, right here in the United States, they are doing it in a certain way in New Orleans right now. This isn't what would be called "conspiracy theory" this is real history, and the results of what happen, and is happening because of past efforts.

I would suggest reading anything by Naomi Klein. You can get her articles all over the net for free

yo I put up the link to that at the beginning of the post. It's from the Stuff White People Like blog, started by a Canadian who lived in LA for a
while.

The corporation talk in this debate jogged my memory, so I tossed it up.

You may suggest those, I have read them. I do consider there work to be old news. It might not be old news, to most, but I read those authors years ago. Klein is "cutting edge," fresh info, in my opinion.

Having trouble sleeping?, put on a Chomsky talk. That will do the trick.

@sexy

"save ourselves from ourselves" -- just another way of saying, saving the likes of me from the likes of you. it is naive, purely, simply, completely to think that words one defines as knowledge can or will change what is plainly human nature.

but we forget, and each generation tries it again as if it's new found wisdom.

...well i can see what kind of mood i'm in this morning. time to ride and get happy.

You may want to refrain from sarcasm, especially this early in the morning it's likely to go over many ridazz headz.

On the spelling thing, I'm pretty spelling retarded, but fortunately the browser I use (safar) has a spell check built in.

I can only assume that insecurity and low self esteem at at the root of negativa personal attacks.

Give a fluffa some fluffing, buy a drunkard a (root)beer, tell a skinny panted hipster that you (sincerely) think that they are cool, ride a nice bike, and are making cycling more fun for everyone.

Then we can all have an online hugfest ... OK OK maybe we should hug before the fluffing so nobody gets poked.

TO MEET:
How about somewhere in the middle of the city during this next week?

OR perhaps next weekend AT the bus' current location (Lake View Terrace, northern edge of the valley.) This would be better for discussion, but not better logistically.

I'd prefer to carpool, or maybe ride to the bus!

I'd love to, but no dice. The bus is not easily in-out from its current location. It is parked there for the duration of construction, or until a better location is selected.

Do you want to ride there or otherwise go there?
Do you want to meet in LA?
Other suggestions?

LETS SET THE TIME FOR MONDAY AT 8PM

We should determine a place somehwere a little more westerly, maybe Mid-City or K-Town. or something near Western Ave. I think thats a fair dividing line. SMASH is mostly westside, btw.

The meeting should be open to Angel Investors ONLY.

To qualify for "Angel Investor" status you need the following:

- A letter from your BF, GF, mom or some kind of proof that you have at least $2.00 in your pocket.

- A letter from your BF, GF, mom or some kind of proof that in the last 12 months you've purchased a six pack of beer with your own funds and you've shared at least one can with someone else without expecting sexual favors in return.
