NOPE! You do NOT need a fixie! Although that is very popular, some of the best players do not use a fixie, including myself, although I currently I am riding one, due to my main polo bike being down for the moment. Use whatever bike you can ride the best. Come on down it's really not that dangerous, I have seen people get waaay more fuctup riding all drunk.
Not to say we dont drink at Polo. In fact not drinking is cheating.

Tonite was very exciting, especially after WE TOOK OVER THE ROLLER RINK!!! Is that an LA first? Without a doubt that is the best place to play, as our 4 on 4 will attest! Excellent surface, that place is the number one place to Play polo PERIOD
Can't promise we'll get that rink every time, but the later we start there the better. Post up here if anyone wants to get a night game going, or just to mess around there before next Monday, it is lit well into the night...
Yes. Yes I do. You are sprinting toward your Blue Belt in record time Jeff. If you wish to test it yerself, use a tennis ball it's the same size as a regulation polo ball. Also good for practicing a shot, as the ball will rebound off a wall to you. When can I get that cd of the media you created last night?
When ever, i live over in north hollywood by the metro station, i am going to have to burn it to a few discs cause it was like 2 gb of footage. I can burn it tonight an you can swing by and pick it up if you would like or i can meet you somewhere, then you can start editing it for a short clip for the homepage or something. Just shoot me a text or call me.
Definitely I roll by tonite. I'll text you at about 8 oclock, then I can come by, bring that mallet so I can scope it out. I will bring discs, or a flash drive or something.
Thanks to a quick run to the Orange Giant or hardware stores, Jeff and I took Alex through mallet making 101. Maybe it was the other way around, or a little bit of both.

Yo the diameter of the strike was Poy-fect! Just make it a little longer, the width of the Experimental model (as tested) was about 3 inches... I think a mallet head 4 inches - 5 inches would be ideal. We'll worry about the shaft later so no need to hollow that out. Athough I must say the way you hooked up the experimental was SICK! Never seen that before.
Oh yeah team don't forget Sunday is the All City friendly tourney. Not sure who's in town, but I spoke with some of you earlier about this, hopefully they get the Mar Vista Rink

This will be very interesting. I spoke to some of you last night about this, it's very important all my starters show up today. I will bring all of our mallets.

I would also like to say the game is really picking up and everyone is getting really good. The shot that Wally has AKA The Shovel is rad. David was ripin it up and Too Short stopped cheerleading and came to play with some really good plays. I am going to use some clips i have shot from the last few weeks and make a little video soon.

Rikk I have decided to offer a special to you, and anyone else who wants a mallet. I don't have enough to sell, or sponsor people with, given the scarcity of raw materials. However I am committed to seeing as many mallets made, and made properly as possible.
The hardest part to come up with is a ski pole. WHOEVER can find a PAIR of ski poles, will receive a free custom designed mallet built to their exact specifications by me personally, with a lifetime warranty*. In exchange for this service, you must give me one of the two ski poles. A PAIR can be found in thrift shops for $5-$15. You don't have to buy anything else, I have the screws, proper plastic, tape, grips, attachments etc. If you don't want to give up one of the ski poles, I understand. I can build them up, using your ski poles for $15 each.

I bought some new Mallet attachments to, much better than the old ones that kept breaking off. These new ones are the same kind I use on my Mallet, the Concept 3
Concept technology is making its way in to production!

yo alex, i found some abs cement thing in my garage the other day, i was wondering if you wanted me to bring that on monday to put on the caps for some of the mallets so that they stop coming off
No need for the glue, the caps that were coming off have all been replaced by a better variety. I try not to glue them because then I can't reuse them when I rebuild the mallet heads.

I'm assuming some of you have thought or seen this but I'm posting it anyway. After bending a few spokes last Monday I found this how to for making cheap disk covers for wheels. Check it out, also a good idea mentioned would be to mark or color the disks so you can recognize your team mates without having to look up.
Good games people, I know it got a little physical, a little heated out there last night, but I think everyone will calm down a little and appropriately adjust to the expectations of 818 Polo when we return next week.

I have a "little" more REPSECT for MAN and MACHINE than the "new" 310 that showed up.
I love polo, but will refused to play if requirement of full face helmet and pads are needed to ward of bodily injury.
This was the first game I have ever played, in which a rider specifically comes at you with malitious intent of knocking you to the pavement.
In my eyes polo should be a game of grace, skill, balance, and experiance. I admit I am not nearly as good as other players, but anyone can play full contact bicycle hockey. I have more riding on going to work on tuesday than a monday night casual polo PRACTICE!
Thanks for the warning about the player in question TC4TB's. We might just have to start a TESTOSTERONE ZONE game for the aggresive players, and freindly more skill oreiented games. I have looked at alot of polo video's and research online and have never seen someone play so dangerously as mondays PRACTICE!
Yes Parlor Bikes, your concerns are valid and hopefully they will be read by those that play so rough, and if they return they will know how to act right. I have worked hard to teach the riders that play with us the finesse game of polo, not the rough house version, and hopefully your post doesnt scare away those that were curious, because the fact of the matter is our brand of Polo is light contact, not brutality based, and we will not tolerate otherwise. We have 17 year old girls who show up all the time, so I know our game is not that wild.
If you want to play at the biggest, best, polo scene in LA, you will play by our rules.
Yeah, I showed up two polos ago and it wasn't bad at all. I think the worst thing that happened was me not knowing how to block correctly in turn making someone fall on me. If anything, it was too gentle. ;P Just kidding.
818 bike polo going global as featured in the new " NEW ANGELES " magazine, its really cool i have a bunch of copies for all the homies that made it that day for the shoot.

This was at the 13 Skids Race, the Skid Vicious race. They had some alleycat events and a hell of a course, with Polo afterwards. Dickies filmed and photographed everybody, and lord knows what they did with the images, all we know is they said they were using them in Europe, and they sent me a crappy T-shirt, and no pants.
With the Carnival taking up our usual Polo Grounds, we had to use a smaller alternative site, which led to a lot of fun 2 on 2 games, played to five; fast and furiously.
Most intriguing were the two grudge matches played out two on two, between the #2 and #3 Polo riders from 818, vs the #2 and #3 from 310. A very exciting series to watch, although the first game, in which 310 Blanked 818 5-0 was forgettable, the home team made up for it in a rematch that proved to be a real nail biter!
The rematch started off like the first game, with 818 promptly giving up 2 goals on back to back scoop shots, but they stopped the ball right there, if not the momentum.
Following some big midfield steals and showtime-ish passing, 818 quickly tied it up before a drive to the lane by 310 made it 3-2. 818 tied it up moments later on a liner by david thru the goalies bottom bracket- from half court!
Too $hort upped the ante for for class with some daring work in the slot, makin 4-3 without yeilding to pressure or dabbing in the face of some hard scoop drives all the way up to the goal line, which 310 relied on throughout the nite, to make it 4-4.
Eventually, the longest game of the nite ended when the frequency of 310's dabbing in the offensive zone cost them protection in the rear, and David's 3 fast break on an empty net put it away for good with 5th goal- tying the series at a game a piece.
I felt so dirty being traded to the 310 team mid way through the last game. Do I not share the ever burning 81hate, do I not yell eat shit dirtbag when I am bumped, do I not scream down the court to recover the ball? These are the questions that occupy my thoughts whilst my head rests on my pillow at night.
Sorry about that substitution Harry, but under the current player's union collective bargaining agreement (valid thru 2009) I can't sub in for any team other than 818, on account of 818 club ownership pegging me with the franchise tag on my latest contract. But you'll always be one of us, at least until we play IE or 310 again and their body or bike breaks during play. Sorry :(...

Brilliant Polo last night, you people are the reason just riding a bike around town seems so boring to me now... This, Choppercabras, MR, and C.R.A.N.K. MOB are the only biking that does it for me anymore
NORTH HOLLYWOOD- Continental went the polo when out of towner “Brian” repped it for the 212 (New York City) with a lot of potential, 3 trick mallets, a Bona Fide polo bike, and unfortunately for him, no victories in his series’ with the locals, including losses with lines featuring 818 First Team All-Star polo riders. His valuable insight did make up for his rusty game play in an interview with the East Coaster, when he revealed that NYC had decided to do away with the Scoop Shot, a form of shuffling the ball, which is an illegal score. This ban was met with support from the home team, and derision from some of the visitors, though the move to formally ban it was not unexpected. Currently the shot’s ban is only valid on shots in the 818 home game and tourneys hosted there. Whether that ban, or the â€no throwing mallets rule’ is picked up citywide remains to be seen. Of course the night featured other surprises, including a visit from George, the Fixed Gear Stunt Rider of LA Brakeless, and a friend. Both played a tight, well communicated brand of Polo, though his buddy was scoop shot predisposed. Despite a few big turnovers in mid court, some good screens were played, and George proved he could wheelie and shoot at the same time.
The real story of the night however was the 17 year old Female Phenom, Lil’ Sarah of Encino! Back to back goals in a 2 minute span to put her team up by one, epic scoring met with loud cheering, as well as a HUGE, game changing save in net, in the last game of the night in the Polo Rink… AFTER the Police attempted to kick us out! Who can argue with this gal when she demands “one more game” (which turned in to two), as she chucks her mallet into the pile. The cones were brought back out and a split squad of 323, 310 and 818 riders toook the polo grounds. After a lengthy back and forth chess match between the riders, with 4 ties and lots of dabbing for all the players, a fast break set up a 2 on none with only lil’ Sarah in goal. This proved to be more than enough for Too $hort and David to handle, as his hard slap shot 5 feet from the net failed to cross the line when it counted. If Sarah had been half an inch later in getting her mallet to the ball, the game would have been lost for her team. Her block and rebound set up a daring crash to the other side, where the winning goal was scored on some shady shoulder checking from â€El Joker’ involving the boards, and an unlucky defensive player getting bumped out of the net. This led to a favorable rebound by the offensive line, finally closing out the night.
Awesome games last night MARK has power and range on his shot... Nice to play a less intense, fun time game last night with the locals only this time, easy and fun with no rough bs

Matt Vidal, one of the top players in the city, the man who brought Polo to LA, is leaving in two weeks for London, so this Virgil game will be his last in the 323. Virgil is a great Polo grounds, come out for this if you can, we can take the subway to get there, mebbe go get some scoops in the Bicycle DIstrict afterwards. He named it 213 Polo on accident.

Last night the 818 Crew played an easy road series with the 310 locals at Woodbine, in Matt Vidal, the bringer of Polo to LA's final Polo night in the United States. The elaborate send off included a formal presentation of an Official 818 Mallet, (pix to follow) featuring a 3-D designed mallet head, custom sculpted aluminum shaft, and wooden alignment insert with a handwrapped grip, and last but not least a fancy hand engraving by FATE of 7th letter.
After the formalities of split squad/rookie games were out of the way, which did showcase a lot of new talent and the transition from cheerleader to player for some riders, the heated rivalry between 310 and the 818 starters began. At first glance, the 818 might have appeared overmatched, as 310 had a combined total of 6.5 years of Polo experience, compared to the year and a half TOTAL experience of the Valley Boyz. The home crowd was stocked deep with 4 or 5 spectators for every 310 starter, compared to the total crew of 4 from the Valley. But this didn't influence the final outcome at all, as 818 went undefeated in the 3 game series, cruising to victory while riding Brick Wall goaltending from Too $hort, and a high-octane, Showtime Lakers style offense coordinated by Joker and David.
Matt's 310 team got burnt early on, narrowly escaping a first game shutout 5-1 (games are to 5) and the situation barely improved statistically as they mustered only 6 goals compared to 818's 15. Between a lot of steals in their own zone, and the soft but laser accurate passes 818 was able to score 4 goals total without 310 even touching the ball. Even in their own zone 818 managed some clean shoulder checking and forced dabs (footdown) on the top shelf goalie, Efram, of LA Brakeless. The city awaits the next matchup with 310, only this time hopefully (for 310) they can get David Cargill, widely acknowledged as the city's best player to start for them, to avoid such a one sided loss.
Matt Vidal, sorry you had to go out like that, but we Love you, and we know London is going to get that much better when you arrive for that big time Professor job over there. And congrats on winning that Pardon so can get your Visa. Don't forget us in LA ese!

NIght of the Rookies, night of the Flat tires at the Polo grounds last night! Five flats and exceptional game play from the draft picks. Several first timers came out and appeared to enjoy the sport, playing with us from 7 til midnight. Although you could cool your whole house off with the Romeo's ice cold shot last night, the new guys made up for it by heating up the scoreboard with a continuous flow of goals on a hot streak by Mark, who made good from the blue line or better on too many shots to count!
It didn't end there, Stilline had some fancy moves and rough boarding action, jamming up El Joker whenever he had the chance, and juking him for a breakaway goal later on. Nobody was left out of the action, as Spider Man Eli came thru with some big forced dabs on some weak-kneed fixie riders, further proving fixies aren't the only way to play as he racked up forced dab after dab on his freewheel. Even new guys Lance and Tim proved their mettle with effective screens and steals!
Most importantly, the night featured the award of two more Mallets on Merit!
Far and away one of the most difficult to obtain and sought after bike related rewards, right up there with Wolfpack spoke cards and dog tags, the Mallet on Merit award is awarded to the most promising and talented polo riders. The mallet is custom built to the rider's specifications, factoring in several measurements and subjective factors to ensure the best possible game play.
Last night's recipients were Mark and Lil' Sarah! Mark for shooting consistently accurate form range, as well as in close quarters with traffic. Sarah got hers for her tenacious defense and patience in net. She also never misses a polo match, booking it after class over 12 miles away to get to the polo grounds with a perfect attendance record.
Hell yeah sarah and mark are straight polo originals. Girl can true a wheel as well as she shoots and mark has the skillz that pay the billz. That shit was fun and the rink was epic once again. Come and get your polo on. Too much fun!

As you all know, our dear friend and colleague, Matt Vidal, the bringer of polo to Los Angeles, was awarded the Mallet on Merit, Lifetime Achievement Edition. The innaugural recipient, his prize was a special mallet designed in AutoCAD and finished at Roland Sands Design Shop. Hundreds of games' experience and research went into the final product, a one of one mallet featuring layers of game changing technology that enhance the shooting, stickhandling, and defensive aspects of the great game of Bicycle Polo. As you can see from these pictures, it also sports cutsom engraving by the local player Fate, of the 7th letter crew.
A special bend was shaped into the aluminum to allow the strike side of the mallet closer to the ball, but not sacrifice the overall length which is used for fancy hockey-style ball handling

i really feel like bike polo is on the rise, and that more kids are going to fall in love with it. I love that there is almost as many women playing as there are their male counterparts, it makes for a great balance of energy.

Just got off the phone with 818 Bike Polo's in house legal counsel, and according to the current Major League Bike Polo collective bargaining agreement 2008-2009, the 818 B-Line CANNOT be determined just by El Joker alone.

Polo is an amazingly fun game. I still kinda suck, but I'll get better! Sucked I didn't play at all yesterday, but after my crash I just wanted to chill. You guys keep reppin' the game solid, and I love to see that!

I love polo...it has changed my life. When I played my first polo game (about a month ago) I was still on a single speed. The next day, being Monday, I went out and changed it to a fixie....Now I have a reason to live!!!!!!!!

Well Bike Porn from PDX got theirs, and I know I got mine! I'd say 818's 3 wins were among the hardest fought wins I've ever had to trudge through, but I will take 'em just the same. As you all know, our dear friend and colleague, Matt Vidal, the bringer of polo to Los Angeles, was awarded the Mallet on Merit, Lifetime Achievement Edition. The innaugural recipient, his prize was a special mallet designed in AutoCAD and finished at Roland Sands Design Shop. Hundreds of games' experience and research went into the final product, a one of one mallet featuring layers of game changing technology that enhance the shooting, stickhandling, and defensive aspects of the great game of Bicycle Polo. As you can see from these pictures, it also sports cutsom engraving by the local player Fate, of the 7th letter crew. 
A special bend was shaped into the aluminum to allow the strike side of the mallet closer to the ball, but not sacrifice the overall length which is used for fancy hockey-style ball handling 
The mallet head istelf is made of top secret, light weight Petro Chemically based substances
