Perhaps he was riding geared all his life and felt the gears were too much of a handicap.
IMO, gears make you lazy, contrary to what my asshole of a local shop says.

you can pick up vuelta rims on craigslist for i think around $140 a set...you'll need 700 tubes and new 700 tires.

LA BRAKELESS has good cranks...

here's a set of rims and tires for $125

oh gosh, thats more pretentious BS from idiot fixed gear weirdos.

i bet they feel "more zen-like" with the road too...

if u have a geared bike that works, just ride it.

u will be more comfortable with it.

u will be more efficient.

u will ride farther and longer.

if ur converting it to make urself look cool and conform to other "ridazz" then just say it. go get urself some skinny cut offs and a mohawk while ur at it.

if ur bike has been taken care of well, just ride that fucker to the ground.

You may want to keep it as is and enjoy it as a road bike, as the expenses add up fast if you want to do a conversion and still have it look good and be safe to ride.

Here's a ballpark list of the stuff you'll need.

Pake Crank 165mm - $60
Shimano UN-54BB 107 or 110mm - $25
Weinmann DP18 / Vuelta Airline Wheelset - $140-170
Tektro R556 front brake (brake lever?) - $30-50
1/8 Chain - $10
Cog/Lockring - $15-30
700c Tires = $25-40

To do the conversion you want, you're looking at close to $300, or about what a bikesdirect.com fixie would go for. If I were you, I'd enjoy the road bike, buy the bd.com fixie, and have a spare bike you can loan to friends as needed. (Gears are handy, as is a spare bike.)

You can always make a cheaper fixie by buying a 27" track rear wheel for $80-100, and some shorter chainring bolts for $6, and a cog and a lockring, but to have something customized gets kind of expensive.

If you have any interest in reading about how I went overboard converting a beat up old Schwinn frame into a fixie, you can follow the steps here http://www.losangelescyclist.com/2009/02/ridiculous-pink-fixie-part-1.html (click on the links to the right for the other parts).

Good luck!

didnt mean to make it sound so harsh.

if its a nice well taken care of bike, why ruin it?

and really, does it mean ur lazy if u have gears?

there's no logic in that statement.

ur lazy if ur lazy. doesnt have to do anything with having gears or not.

I think he can get rims/wheels/tubes as a set from either some craigslist deals or the JUNKY RUSTY BIKES shop in long beach....usually the craigslist rims come with cogs.

that cuts out $15-$30 for cog/lockring and the $25 -$40 for tires/tubes.

the tektro brake levers are $5 i think at that shop near fletcher and riverside. i forgot the name of the shop.

wheels, crank, chain, brake...

good luck. keep us updated...

That's okay, my folding MTB is due for a bit of an overhaul anyway.
Perhaps once that's done, I'll feel a little better about things.

But, that will have to wait for awhile as I've sort of been blacklisted from going into the local shop after our little argument over the existence of high-psi, 26" MTB tires.
Yeah, all they care about is appeasing the local, wannabe racers and putting lift-kits onto their pickup trucks.
Those guys don't even ride.

I don't think gears make you lazy, I just think they make you a little less unaware of your immediate surroundings. I rode a multi-geared bike my entire life. It wasn't until recently that CoolAssMike, being the cool guy that he is, introduced me to the power of the fixed gear. At first I was hesitant with the idea but now it's all I think about riding. When you ride with a fixed gear, you give up the mental fatigue of having to think about which gear to shift up or down to. Also, by slowing down the bike with your leg muscles, you become more aware of when to stop, the anticipation, the road, etc. You don't need a mohawk and your sister's jeans to ride a fixed gear. And it is true what they say, riding fixed is very zen like.

Yes I agree with you there. Riding fixed has open my mind to the world around me. A world that had been clouded for years. Now I feel like that kung fu dood that hung himself in a closet while getting his rocks off. What was that doods name again?

Oh yeah, also when I ride fix my spelling and my ability to compose a paragraph goes out the window. Does that happen to you too? (right now I'm not riding fixed)

im not trying to be an asshole or anything here but please explain how riding a fixed gear is "zen" like.

i do agree that u notice ur surroundings more but i feel that its only bc ur stopping power sucks and u gotta make sure u dont get greased.

u say u give up the mental fatigue of knowing when to shift gears but what about the mental stress of knowing that u can't slow down as fast, the stress of climbing steep hills, the stress of going down steep hills.

what abotu the stress of being chained to only riding flat areas and places without steep climbs.

ya feel me?

dont get me wrong, riding fixed is fun, its simple, etc. but why convert a good geared bike?

I could see your point about climbing and such, but I know my area well enough that most hills are quite doable on my high gears.
Other areas, I've been having the tendency to spin out like a jack-ass and top out at a measly speed.
One limiting factor I hate about my bike right now is that this thing is restricted to a 44-46t at the most.
Any higher than that and it's jammed up against the chainstays, unless I take a 3lb sledge, soften the metal with a torch, and beat the drive-side near the BB inward.

CLEARANCE!!!

I don't feel chained to flat areas at all. I love and welcome the hills. If you haven't tried a fixed gear, just test one out. My words don't do it justice. I just like the feeling a lot of riding fixed. When I say 'zen' I mean in the sense that you feel a direct connection between your muscles, your pedals/crank and the ground below. I find it easier to maneuver, to speed up, slow down and in general, just a better handling of the bike. I also find that when I ride fixed gear, I like to mispell things and make funny paragrahs.

i guess this is just a difference in opinion,

i ride fixed and i definitely want a decent geared bike.

there are hills i want to climb but its srsly a huge pain with my bike.

i found out it was easier to just shift up a few gears to speed up, and use two brakes to slow down faster.

i liked the handling on my bike and how it could take sharp turns and not have to worry about my pedal smacking the ground.

i dont really see the zen but i do feel a nice connection between my ass and my saddle and the asphalt below.

hahahahahah

some people just prefer a fixie conversion cause its lighter, simpler, sturdier and more reliable than its geared companion.

but who cares? everybody has their own wants/ needs ... why judge?

.........................

I got my fixed wheel set at Orange 20 for $160 ... they are rock solid.

add tires, tubes, chain, cog, lock-ring, labor, and tax i ended up spending more like $350.

If you wanted to do it on the cheap/ adventurous , you might be able to find/fix/build a back wheel and convert to fixed at the bike kitchen for well under $100

What I'm trying to say is.....sure... some kids buy or make "fixies" to be "cool"....no doubt....but to say to someone to keep their geared bike as is and saying it so strongly....is sending the wrong message...I've ridden some really fucked up geared bikes that are just so slow and rickity....maybe his is too......

Fixed is faster except for hills and aesthetically they look better....in my opinion....

yes, i know, its a schwinn le tour, but still, if it rides nice, why not have that around.

like how u have a geared bike as well and a fixed gear.

why not just ride the geared one around for now and just save up some cash to build a conversion and have both?

I think fixed gear is faster cuz momentum is kept up a lot more after you get a good start....when you stop pedaling on a geared bike on flat ground the speed decreases faster....maybe i'm wrong...it feels that way though...

i remember seeing fixed geared bikes and wondering why they were getting so popular and more and more "fixies" were on the road and on m.r. rides....so I tried one and instantly liked the feeling of it....It was that simple....

luckily some dude was throwing out his motobecane 12 speed...converted it for under $200. I got lucky and got some vuelta rims from a shop on central for $75 for the set.

@graham

idk if u remember but i used to have a decent 105 setup on my blue and yellow khs.

but after awhile, the teeth onthe cassette started wearing down and chipping off.

i started searching for a new cassette but no one had a replacement. it was like some old ass freehub or something.

i was like, i dont wanna have to rebuild a new wheel AND get a new freewheel just to have it as a friction shifter.

so matt suggested that i just go fixed since it would be way cheaper.

so thats the story of me and my dumb bike.

btw, whats the deal with ur situation.

did u go already or no?

to be honest i dont want a fixed gear to be showing off...
i dont even think my little sisters pants fit me and i dont wear my jeans that tight...
lol
however i was thinking of the fixed gear because of the bike rides you guys
have and at some point it seemed like it was gonna be better...
but you guys have been giving me really good advice about the money that will
cost me to cuztomize my bike...
i really like my bike the way it is because its really smooth and super easy to handle...
and to be honest it feels good to have brakes on a bike...
so i think instead of spending about $300 on my schwinn im gonna look for a fixie for $300 or less ...

Just keep it clean and well maintained and you'll get lots of compliments on it. Also keep it original. If you change parts around, save the parts you took off. It'll be worth more if you ever decide to sell it when it's all original.

Do what you want but don't do it just because it's the in thing and know what you're getting into. I love riding both kinds of bikes but fixed-gear riding isn't inherently cooler or better, just different.

Be aware that a conversion will end up costing more than the price of a new cheap tarck bike. If you don't mind that and enjoy the building and learning experience, that's fine.

If you're doing it for "cred" or to look cool, I can tell you right now that the track bike fashionistas will not be impressed by your conversion. Simply, you can't win that game with your draft picks!

I agree. Fixed or geared it doesn't matter, one is not better than the other. The fact is they're different and thats what matters. They offer different challenges, enjoy the nuances of each. When you proficient with one try the other, throw singlespeeds in the mix too.

he has a bunch of used parts and my friend built up a nice 6 speed road bike for like 140 or something like that.

I just provided the frame.

Don't get Paul started on fixed gear bikes...

If you're curious about how it might be getting around town with just a single gear, try converting to a single speed first.

Buy a new chain at Target or walmart ($5) or just have your chain shortened and save the 5 bucks and a BMX freewheel from Paul (Atomic Cycles), $12-15 I think, and if you don't know how to take your cassette off, have Paul (Atomic do the conversion, I don't know how much he would charge but its a 15 minute job so its got to be under $20 ?

Thats all you need to go single speed. Then if hills are no pain, go to fixed.

6speed cassette on a free hub with index downtube shifters

if i wanted to use a newer set up, i would have had to rebuild the wheel to use a freewheel and it would have been changed to a friction shifter.

whats wrong with ur tire?

if its a flat or something, we might be able to fix it before we ride.

hmmm $150, depends on what they are doing.

from my knowledge, all u really need is a new back wheel built with a track hub and a cog for it.

thats all i did with my bike. oh and got a new chain.

it cost me around 70 bucks or something.

how bout this, keep it as is from now, and bring ur bike out to TNS when u have a chance.

mmaceda does tns and works at cycle world. he'll give u a run down on what u need to do and how much it will approx. cost.

its true!

The bike path often has goat head thorns

but older tires are really susceptible to that stuff

if you do the fixie conversion, don't cheap out on tires!

just dish out $40 each and get some quality tires like armadillos or gatorskins.

you will average 1 flat every 500 or 1000 miles insead of 100 or 200 miles with cheaper/ older tires.

in the mean time, you can add some tire liners (like mr. tuffies) if you aren;t changing tires soon. it adds some weight to the tire, but could be a cheap solution that will allow you ride some of the uglier, debris ridden roads in L.A. and no have to find new routes, just cause of glass and thorns.
