By hearty, I meant down home, truck driver food.

Chicken-fried steak, sausage-gravy, biscuits, home-fries, things like that.

I guess only know alot of this because one of my parents friends came from the old school part of Kentucky and taught me this at a young age.

oat meal with some cut up apples, walnuts and cinnamon (and whatever you may like to sweeten or liquidify it with) quick and healthy (as long as you don't sweeten it)

I know it's basic, but you may have never thought about it.

skillet up some vegs (onions, bell peppers, mushrooms), beans, along with some tomatoes, avocados, cilantro . Put it together in a wrap add (tortilla, lavsh bread, etc) some seasoning (brags, humus, etc) YUM (only as healthy as the wrap is, and that is subjective)

Quick and easy liquid breakfast: green smoothie: 2 cups water and/or juice, 2 cups fruit (I do frozen mangoes or pineapples), 2 bananas, 1-2 bunches of dark leafy greens (I do spinach) (the more greens your palate can handle the better the smoothie is for you). This will make you around 32 oz, just enough to fill u up for a couple hours or till lunch

u know, i dont think ive ever bought frozen mangoes or pineapples. do u cut and freeze them urself or do u pick up frozen packaged bags at the store? im guessing theyd be with where the frozen strawberries are.

at 1-2 bunches of dark greens, can you taste it or is it masked pretty well?

Salads! Not that iceberg lettuce shit, I'm talking about dark greens. The Herb Garden salad in a bag from Trader Joe's is delish with some olive oil, some rice vinegar, some soy sauce, walnuts, sesame seeds, and crushed pepper. Sooo good ^_^

SALMON!!!! salmon lightly season with salt and pepper and sliced garlic stuffed within. Bake it and voilĂ !
You can eat it solo, with steamed veggies or on top of a bed of spinich and julienned carrots. But skip the dressing and use lemon instead! It's even more yummy!
If salmon is too expensive, replace with lean chicken (not as yummy as salmon though).

Ps. I still haven't lost weight either cuz of all the beer. I bet by cutting beer completely for a month it'd make a huge dif on my waist and wallet... Oh and my liver.

trader joes has a better deal on frozen fruit, like 1.79 a bag or something compared to ralph's $5 bags.

id start with 1 bunch of spinach and see how you like it, i use about 1.5-2 bunches in mine and the taste is masked quite well. but the taste is slightly aquired... oj > water helps a lot

I've got to try this.

Also, I love this salad dressing, plus it's easy.

I usually make it to taste.
Powdered thyme
Dried thyme
Fresh lemon juice
Olive oil (use double amount of lemon juice)
a hint of paprika (mmmm smokey)

mix it up and pour over a leafy salad (really good with basil, tomatoes and pita "croutons")

Nom nom nom.

Here are some of my 'On-the-go" meals.

1. Breakfast:
-Two pieces of fruit
-Cup of yogurt
- Water bottle full of OJ (or a large container filled mostly water, some orange juice, salt [for riding/physical activity] and a little sugar.. doesn't taste bad)

2. Lunch:
-Two bananas or a large can of pineapple in it's own juice, no syrup (a can of pineapple makes you feel pretty full)
-Small can of white albacore tuna in water. Bring a packet of mustard and some crackers or make a tuna sandwich with a little mayo and mustard.

All of this can be packed into a lunch-box

I eat light during the day because I'm either riding or working out a lot. I'm pretty big (athletic-wise and not height-wise) but I'm still a very light eater. I just eat very, very often.

Bringing a small container that can hold a large scoop or two of raw almonds is good to have as well.

I do a bit of weight lifting. I'm usually just doing maintenance lifting mixed with cardio but sometimes I go through some bulking phases. I'd consume about 70g of protein every day during a bulking phase.

Regular basis, though, I make protein shakes every other day. About 50g every other day. Consuming it all at once fills you up pretty good (gets you nice and gaseous too :] ).

You're probably thinking that because you don't lift that protein supplements would be useless. Not the case. Most Americans eat plenty of heavy meat to meet their protein requirments, but for those who don't eat too much meat drinkable protein can be very beneficial. A jug of protein is expensive ($30 - $50 usually), but one shake made probably fills you up and probably costs less than any other meal you would have bought. In the long run you'd be saving.

Sytha-6 (brand) has banana and chocolate flavors that are fucking delicious mixing them in nothing but water. Or you can mix into part water and skimmed milk... tastes like milkshakes with hardly any calories (relatively). If your going to mix with milk, make sure to shake it up in water first. Milk is fatty and the protein clumps (unless you shake it psychotically aggressive for a minute or two).

If anyone would like any type of exercise or dieting tips, I've got a lot of experience in the fields (currently military and getting out in September! fucking woot!) I'd be happy to help out.

If you maintain a decent diet throughout the week, you can junk food binge several times a week and keep slimming up.

Some other tips coming to mind:

- Eat light. Just enough to where you don't feel hunger anymore, but also don't feel like you've eaten anything at all. Optimal for riding, lifting, cardio, sports, anything physical.

- The darker the greens, the better they are for you (99% of the time). Watch out for that salad dressing, though. Pound-for-pound, that's some of the least healthy stuff. Dressing-heavy salads are sooo deceptive.

- Stay away from less organic stuff. Sugar and bread do nothing but store fat. However, eating a lot of naturally occurring sugars (fruit) will take away that subconscious sugar crave. If you think about it, and look at the labels, sugar is LOADED into fucking everything. A tiny 3 in. tall mini-bottle of cranberry juice often has 30 - 36g of sugar! That's several spoonfuls. It's practically liquid sugar.

- Shop at farmers markets. The food might be more expensive but it's much healthier. If you're a budget person (as I am sometimes) shop at the little specialty markets. Indian, Mexican, Asian... always cheaper and often tastier.

- Add random shit to your food. Yogurt: throw in some oats, acai berries, and a squirt of honey for taste and energy. Lunch Meat Sandwich: Instead of lettuce, use spinach with a spritz of lemon juice. Raw Seeds, Oats, Nuts, and Berries: You can buy all of these raw (no yucky salt) mix em' up in a container and chomp away. Store-bought trail mix isn't that great.

- Drink Pedialite (spelling?). Yeah, the baby drink. A lot of pro athletes drink it to maintain hydration. The sodium (not too much sodium in a day now) in it keeps you hydrated much better than Gatorade.

- Olive Oil and Canola Oil. Healthiest. Use them when cooking with oil.

- The raw disgusting oatmeal instead of all that flavored shit: Add your own stuff to make it taste good. Raisins, Acai berries (I mentioned these berries twice.. they're very good for you), blueberries (these are usually expensive.. especially overseas, ugh), honey, skimmed milk, etc.

- Water! I drink anywhere from 5 to 12 bottles of water a day. I'm not in LA right now. I'm in the Middle East and in the military. I get bottled water for free by the palette. You probably do not so drink the water from the garden hose... it's not dangerous just fuckin' drink it. If your pissing clear you're hydrated well.. keep drinking.

- Liquid calories! Be aware of the shit you're drinking. Soda is utterly, fucking horrible. Knock that shit off. Liquid calories are very deceptive. Most people don't know just how many calories they consume, and so quickly! Like those slushies at 711? Those mother fuckers are worse than a pint of ice cream... no shit. They don't have a nutrition label for you to read either.

- Eat smaller proportions. You can eat all that hearty, homeland stuff. Steak, mashed potatoes, a little gravy, etc. Just keep the proportions small. I eat a half plate (American plates are fucking huge compared to the rest of the world) and save the rest for an hour or two later. Yes, an hour or two makes a pretty big difference, but try to spread out the eating intervals even more.

- Never feeling full: Eat well enough for long enough to realize how much you can eat before and/or after physical activity without feeling full. When you've got a good grasp on how much you can eat without feeling hungry or full, you'll realize you feel much, much better after every meal.

- Drink water when you're feeling hungry to take some of that feeling away. Pound your water, though. I usually tilt a bottle of water to my face 2 or 3 times before I'm finished. You learn to drink a ton of water and very quickly in the military. Squeeze some lemon into your water if you really don't like drinking anything unsweetened. After drinking about 8 bottles of water a day (at least) you start to feel a lot better.

That's all I can think of for now. I may post some later, tomorrow, when I get to Cali... who knows.

Merrickx@gmail.com if you're feeling motivated and want to shed some lbs, tone-up, bulk-up, get some nasty, military-style cardio, whatever. I'm here for you guys

Kudos to the Hummus.

Beans! Beans are full of antioxidants and some of the best food. If you can find a good vege or vegan place with black bean burgers. OMG best stuff ever. Look up which beans are best. Black beans are up there (black eyed peas?), but there's one type that surpasses all by far. Can't remember which.
