LACM
Thread started by stevo4 at 10.26.07 - 9:54 am

I'm Concerned.

I'm Very Very Concerned.

What with the Halloween Ride tonight and all, i'm scared that the LACM ride might not have BBD or Digibel or any tunes to lead us through the early evening. I feel that without a little Eazy-E or Morrissey, etc. our group might roam aimlessly and our little feetsies won't have anything to spin along too.

Please, someone tell me not to worry and that everything will be ok.

there's an LA critical mass tonight? hmm.

don't worry about it

Word has it Al and BBD will be squaring off to see who brings the noise.

Seeing how this ride only attracts the die hard hardcore elitist of the elitisters, which is apparently about 100 ridazz, we could only have one hardcore elitisters dj on the ride.

This will be a no holds bared, cage match to the finish. There will be no taping out. Last man standing will be the dj for the night.

What was with the pace last night. I think some ppl thought the CM was the criterium. It not a race folks. My gf's bike is 40/18 and she had spots where she had trouble keeping pace. Not to mention going too fast with ppl weaving in the pack caused a bad crash in the 2nd street tunnel. I did not know her personally but I hope she is ok, TY J-Ro for stepping up to help.

You know what? I totally agree. Way too fast.

Problem is there are a ton of new kids who are impatient and too stubborn to keep a slower pace. There also is no concept of how the pace should really be with most people.

I really doubt we are ever going to get them to ride at the right pace. Perhaps it's a hopeless case when it gets this large?

I totally enjoyed the ride. I think people both need to be more conscious of a slower pace in the front, and a faster pace in the back. Try not to fall behind as a stragglerv as well as the front regrouping more often.

THINK OF THE RIDE AS A WHOLE

Perhaps this could be said before the ride?

There was a kid riding next to me on a fixed gear bike when we were going at a normal pace. He said, "Man, I feel like I'm trapped." And then he went around and hauled ass up to the front of the pack. That's when it got faster and faster. This is the reason why this happens.

Let's think of ideas of how to make this ride work better for all. Without imposing rules and shit.

I think a ride of this magnitude needs a strongly defined front line; maybe a row of riders all wearing yellow or something (pick your color). I didn't hear much music last night, that was also a problem, as we often times yell out "stay behind the music."

I'm sticking with the front line idea. I'd love to see about 5-6 riders in the front that are lit up like christmas trees (figuratively speaking) setting the pace; if one has a music trailer, even better.

Additionally, I noticed the huge gaps police and major intersections caused; maybe a few riders scattered throughout the ride with 2-way radios can communicate these things to the front line.

All ambitious and costly, I know. But I'm sure we can come together and figure this shit out.

I was trying to go slow. I brought my heaviest oldest slowest bike.

But I still consistently found myself near the front.

there's just too many people. You can't have 400 bikes all bunched up into two blocks.

that's when wrecks most likely happen.

I think it's best if the whole sort of swirls through whatever neighborhood, and breaks up and reforms and moves on and people come and go.

It's pointless to worry about the pace.

Some people come on 17 pound fixixe hotrods and some people come on beach cruisers.

Some people are hard core riders with a flat line bady fat ratio, and some people this is the only time they get off their ass in a month.

So having a uniform pace is not prolly gonna happen.

The only thing is everybody had fun. I had a great ride.

As far as music, yeah OK, what I'd like to see is more fireworks.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed with LACM last night, seemed like a ride that had no clear direction or leadership (probably due to hi-jackers), but I guess that is the true nature of a Critical Mass Ride, but would have like to have the group more together and see less people and newbies getting lost in Los Angeles (saw a lot of people lost around Echo Park and looking clueless)

I stopped in Echo Park and had a great time at the grand opening of the Mom Ridazz new art studio, props for all the great cheese. I like cheese!

Keep the ideas rolling. A front line might be a good idea. However, remember to stay in the spirit of Critical Mass and not encourage any hierarchical organization.

The physics definition of the term critical mass is about the massive change that can happen by the right amount of materials.

It's not agreed among all, but I think we are promoting a change in thinking. We celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road. Most of you already know all that. Okay, off my soap box.

Friend of mine in Prescott Arizona has been getting unbeleivable resistance just trying to get a few miles of bike lane put in.

If you been to Prescott you know it's a relatively progressive city, for Arizona.

Can't imagine what would happen if there was a full fledged CM all around the courthouse in downtown Prescott.

Or if they tried doing a CM in, I don't know, Cottonwood or Kingman.

We're not doing bad here in LA.

hat route was silly. I know there isn't supposed to be a leader, but there was, and he decided to find the longest inclines in Los Angeles and climb them with hundreds of people straggling behind. I myself ride fixed and love to haul-ass and ride with an aggressive group, however, that's not why we come to LACM. I brought my gf for her first ride ever after only riding for about 3 weeks. She did really well despite the f'd route. She was a little shaken up by the realization of the nasty crash in the tunnel that happened right in front of us though. We should have been going a quarter of that speed through there. Right after the accident, a dude who apparently had no business riding fixed, couldn't stop and plowed right into the accident. When you have a group of riders who don't really have any biking etiquette, and are set on weaving in and out of novice riders without warning, this is a recipe for disaster. I'd love to see an earlier regrouping/drinking spot as well as someone with a megaphone who everybody gives a little shit, but has actually semi-planned a route and has the well-being of the group at hand.

I'd love to hear an update on 'the girl in the tunnel'. hope she's alright.

Silly route, silly Ralphs stop downtown with silly LAPD lining the streets, and some great people...see you next month.

It was a bit too fast for all the novice and newcomers whoever chose to go to dowtown at that ralphs and all of a sudden wants to boycot the ralphs mustve been on something. we had police tails long before then..... ultimately, we have to be safe cause there were too many falls and find a way to haev order in an unorganized ride.

Well apparantly not. Whovever was leading the ride picked the longest incline in LA and a pace that was way too fast for anyone except seasoned riders with the right bikes. Nobody seemed to care that tons of people were having trouble keeping up then getting lost. I saw guys that ride a lot sweating their azzez off looking like they were not having fun. I know I wasn't.

Seems to me that there's a bit of an ego problem brewing... sorta like "hey look me and my cool friends are the only ones who made it to the end cuz we're really good at riding bikes and look at all the fools that got dropped"

I think what would be really cool is for the crowd to vote on the direction they want to go. Someone would point east, and gauge crowd response, then point north, and gauge crowd response, and same for west and south. Which ever direction is the loudest, that's the direction the ride goes. This way everyone at least has a say so at least once in the ride. And yeah speed up at the front is a problem. Just pass it around that we're not there to race, but ride together will go a long ways. Of course there's always going to be some fucks that want to be in the front and directing the ride. I think the music trailer and letting them get way out in front give us the opportunity to over ride their decision.

On a positive note, it was great seeing that many ridazz out there for CM. And hoping the best for the rida that went down. Best thing you can do about avoiding something like this is create space around you.

LACM is supposed to be leaderless and all, but it isn't. You can tell when it has a leader, when the leader is good or bad, or when it's anyone's call.

Let's forget about what CM is supposed to be and look at what it is here in LA. I've been lurking on MR.com for a while, but riding LACM for over a year.

The ride was "best" when we had a music trailer, and a core group of riders at the front calling the shots and keeping the pace. I didn't mind cruising through the streets with 400 other kids, and I wouldn't mind it now. At the same time, when I realize I'm separated from the pack, and I can see them pulling away, I have to leave the stragglers and go to the front just to find out what's going on.

I never go back. No one does. No one should have to. What we saw last night was LACM leaderless and raw. I had a great time. One of the best rides I've been on. I like the 16 year olds on conversions falling all over the place yelling at cops. I like throwing empty tall boys down alleys as we mash thorugh downtown. I like getting chased out of parking lots by LAPD. I like all these things and I'm always at LACM, and I bring friends. If there's no one to say not to, I'm going to race my friend to the front through the pack, I'm going to ride with a beer in my hand, I'm going to circle and yell at confused motorists at every opportunity. Because it's fun.

LACM has definitely changed since last summer, it's wilder, louder, more dangerous. If we got it together and calmed it down I'd still come and have a great time.

If we keep doing what we've been doing?

I'll see you next LACM. I'll be the drunk kid on the black khs racing 15 year olds.

It was my gf's 1st ride too, and she was a little frustrated with the pace. The route was kind of lame and so was the DT Ralphs stop. Being that close to the Nightclubs and Staples Center on a Friday night is just asking for the cops to mess with us.

Maybe a regular stopping points might be a good idea. I have heard this being called as a ride with no route but a destination. We all know where we are going to end the ride, maybe having regular break spots is a good idea too? That way if anyone gets separated we know where to meet up. This might slow up the pace too?

By the time we regroup, every one was gone. When we got to the tunnel, the accident girl in orange pants was being tended by paramedics. She was holding her head. Some said she hit her head hard and wasn't wearing a helmet. I hope she was O K. After we got out of the tunnel, we couldn't find anyone. We felt so left out. I thought LACM was for everyone who loves to bike. Maybe next time we go slower so most of us stay together and be happy together. I didn't go last night, because of the last two rides I went on, this is the same things that happens. You have these kids, (younger people who are somewhat new to these rides) who like to go fast, so they go to the front and start hauling ass. People try to keep up, it's get spread out. People our left at lights and the ride is broken up. The funny thing is is that these kids can't keep that pace all night (usually only about 20 minutes at most). Doesn't matter, it is broken up and the ride ends up breaking up because of these actions.

My suggestion is that ride pace and speed be announced on these postings. If someone wants to have a slower pace on their rides or faster pace, then they can post that. As for CM or even midnight ridazz rides I don't see this being a possibility, especially for CM. I went to the SFV-CM last month after a good year and a half and everybody wanted to go at a fast pace. Harry was trying to get them to slow down. I watched and realized that what the majority of people wanted to do, they wanted to ride a faster pace. You can't argue with that, if that was the majorities choice. I for one don't see any entertainment in it, so I won't be at CM anymore. Unless we create an alternative CM ride for those that want to go a slower pace, stay together and stop at red traffic lights.

I see posting a preset pace level as the future, so that people can go on the rides that suit their enjoyable riding level.

Problem with that is when people see other people riding faster they speed up cause they think the ride is taking off.

It's a very hard thing to do to speed past people and not attract speedy followers catching your draft! Sometimes it has the reverse effect, but whatcha gonna do, eh?

Make an announcement at the beginning to follow the music trailer. Whoever wants to haul that heavy machinery gets to decide the real route- on the go. You can do anything to convince the music trailer to do a certain route. Vote, bribe, threaten, who cares! But seriously, just follow the music. Put a tall go-cart flag on the trailer for a real assault on people's senses visually and audibly. They will have no choice but to follow it or get dropped for being too far ahead.

Who wants to ride on this ride without music? Not me, not me!

Part of the charm of the critical mass is that each month is different. You can definitely see how it can change from the personality of the group. This past month's ride wasn't particularly fun, but it was enjoyable to some extent. More riding, less stops. Although I have to say that given the pace of this ride, some well placed strategic stops would have helped everyone.. say the parking lot right before the 2nd st. tunnel or even the Walgreens on Echo Park before that. Just to let the group congregate before heading into downtown. You know the group's going fast when you turn your head away for a few seconds and the group is gone... and when even the regulars at critical mass don't know where the group's going heh.

First mass I've been to that my legs were sore the day after.. and I'm no slouch. Maybe someone could organize a Critical Manners??

Heh, I was thinking about something along those lines too!

Also, I really dig the idea of the announced stops by @will. I definitely hate the idea of determining those stops prior to the ride (decisions to be made should always be spontaneous at any CM).

Here's a pitch: maybe vote on the first stop at the beginning and announce it. Everyone would try to stay together, but if the group gets split up we would inevitably come back together at the stop that was voted upon. Even if someone gets a flat, they know where the next stop is and can join back in. Then at the first stop another vote decides the second stop which is then announced, and so on and so forth.

Similar kind of thing (minus the voting) was tried with Santa Monica Critical Mass a while back and it ended up being really fun- felt like a full on bike invasion cause you'd be riding down a sidestreet and see ridazz one and two sidestreets over in little packs but generally heading in the same direction. We were flowing through the city like a big buzzing swarm of bees = LOTS of exposure = BIKE CITY!! On that ride, a few people handed out little slips of paper with the next stop so people wouldn't haggle over where the next stop is or get confused in the pandemonium of police attention that is Santa Monica + group rides. I wish we could have done a vote on the stops (memory is telling me there was no vote), but the concept with rendezvous points was in my mind proven to be a massive success. Dunno why we didn't try variations on it or do it again.

I'd be excited to try the rendezvous points with a group as big as LACM and swarm the shit out of DTLA & surrounding areas. I would only encourage people to vote on the stops as to keep with the ideals of Critical Mass.

I'd really like to hear what you all think of the "vote on rendezvous points" idea. The only pitfall I see is that it might change the personality of the ride. But, in my head, I can see it being a good way to let everyone ride however the hell they want without having to stress about keeping the group together: the group awareness factor would be dialed.

Something about the idea of a "swarm" of cyclists with a span capable of temporarily taking over a whole block in this city really appeals to me, and I would make it a ride but...

Let's face it. I am a westsider. My rides gather 40-50 peeps max! :P Los Angeles CM has easily 300+ riders on a pretty regular basis. A rida swarm of 300 is vastly more effectual than 40-50. Also this is the kind of idea that doesn't need a leader- which is why I wouldn't wanna lead it :)

C.M. is supposed to be leaderless......BUT.......it's obvious LACM in particular is a complete wreck. Maybe next month a few people could step forward and be the leaders....they can take the ride to different areas with input from the rest of the riders....

Again....I know it's supposed to be leaderless but it's just not working for LACM.

A few tall bikes is what we need! :)

Really this last LACM & The People's Ride was a decent ride, we didn't make that many long stops which was great. The group would regroup at lights. It was just a "tad" fast for some.

The time before that, it was an even better route and ride. It was slower, everyone and stayed together. We made a few stops, but they were not than long. And we rode through some good areas.

I think that some communication is the key, I.e. if I yell " slow down, riders back!" and everyone one relays that to the front then the front of the ride can stop at the next light to let people catch up.
But in reality u yell something on cm and no one repeats. I.e. If u hear someone yell "rider down!" you (all of you!) should relay this, therefore the front of the group will hear it, stop and regroup. This happened in the second street tunnel, the fact there was a big pileup didnt get relayed to the front therefore the group got split and thats why we were even at the dtla ralphs, to regroup.
We should be doing this for upcoming turns, vehicles in back, swirving drunk kids, potholes, everything...but the key is for EVERYONE to relay these messages! We are social animals, how did these rides become so antisocial in this aspect?

All these other solutions are unecessary if we were all on the same page (which we're not)

There's sometimes a distance when many new riders are there. A lot of them either don't care about the need to communicate or they just haven't figured out it's importance and effectiveness yet.
Baby steps.

Whenever there is new people, it's a constant process of learning. I was taught by others when i first did Critical Mass in 2005. Hopefully there will be others willing to teach to those who are new and open to it.

I keep getting re-inspired to see Critical Mass improve when there is enough groupthink happening.

Groupthink, a term coined by social psychologist Irving Janis (1972), occurs when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressures lead to a deterioration of “mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment” (p. 9). Groups affected by groupthink ignore alternatives and tend to take irrational actions that dehumanize other groups. A group is especially vulnerable to groupthink when its members are similar in background, when the group is insulated from outside opinions, and when there are no clear rules for decision making.

Wasn't there a group of people a year and a half ago who put forth this exact idea?
They were shot down right here on this forum by those who said Critical Mass should adhere to the original concept of "leaderless" and "laissez faire".

So those people fled, along with their followers to a Facebook group.. You should go there and address the 300 plus members of that group, since they would be happy to assist in creating a more organized ride.

Some months LACM is organized, this past Friday a lot of the "regulars" were out of town so it did end up a little chaotic. Though whoever decided to lead the ride away from Ralphs after the 10 LAPD cars and phalanx of cops lining up in Riot formation surrounded the ride, was a smart guy. I think it was Eddie.

The kids who ride fast. Won't listen to people telling them to slow down. NO matter how much you try to tell them. That is just a fact.

As for what Stewart or SKD try to do last year, it did not make for a fun ride. It was predictable, boring and I don't think people liked the over-announcements. Or maybe people just weren't ready for it. It just seemed like the pre-Peoples Ride. I'm trying to insult SKD or get in a war of words, his intentions where good, but I don't think it went over well. LACM is community thing that is sacred to some of the old timers around here. Those old timers know what a great ride it could be. Unfortunately with some of the participants of today, it can't be "that:"ride anymore.

It's true what Barleye said, LACM is a mess for the most part. I for one think it is time to try something new. Maybe let those who want to go fast go on there own and go fast and have slower pace ride? Maybe try to do what SKD was trying last year?

As for Joe Borfo you think you could write a 1/10th of why don't you like your cell phone as you write about LACM! :-

@sexy

The heavy proliferation of all these young kids getting fixed gear or brakeless S/S is akin to the flood of jobless, college grads trying to get commercial trucking licenses.
One group is jumping on a trend, while the other group is jumping on false track to a big payday.
If anything, these two groups will likely part ways and open the seas back up to those of us who truly do things for the love of the game.
The "cool" kids will find another trend to jump onto, the college grad forced to drive a truck will finally find the career they truly educated themselves for and go back to hating those 18 wheeled pieces of shit.

Just thought I'd share my newfound analogy of two situations I feel personally linked with.

one thing to consider.... A lot of people on LACM don't read this website.....so anything discussed here needs to be reiterated at the start of the ride via megaphone....

Bentsrider.....I love that analogy. I think there is lots of truth in it.

I think that is a great idea Barleye. You got to hype the first ride up. Have some people that get this, inspire the first ride to take off and get going real fast. Make it a real pissing match. I would wait about 10 to 15 minutes to allow the separation. Then go in the other directions.

blackandyellowfujis idea is a good one, yet I don't see it being successful. Even if you get all those people together to forum a V. You get the music trailer and tall bikes in front. These kids will just pass my them front the first opening they get or go into the other opposite lane to pass.

I love jonnyboys idea. That is a really cool idea and would be great for all levels of riders. Those that want to go fast will book to the first stop and those that want to stay together will ride at a slower pace in mass.

I think one good thing about the ride is it only stopped one time before the peoples ride. most rides you go on have two stops so i think critical mass should have no more than one stop. Because it is supposed to be about riding and in a large group. Now when there is a 300 hundred are more people I think it is important to wait 3 light cycles to keep the group together. this is usually when kids start yelling lets go and stop telling me what to do. I think we just need more people being vocal up front. I spent most of my time up front in the fast group trying to get people to slow down and wait at lights.

I was trying to get people to stop for 3 light cycles. But 2 was the most we could get people to wait. So all in all i think my efforts failed because the ride did get so broken up. There were other people trying to do the same thing. But sometimes when a couple of people start riding its like a domino effect. It was good that we only made one group stop. But that makes it all the more important to stop longer at lights or more frequently. It was funny seeing brad on sunset.

Yeah Brad on Sunset is where I and a few other bailed. Was the shortest time I ever stayed on a CM ride.

The thing here is alot of people gave up their right to vote on this ride when they started being a slave to the peeps in the front. Funny, cause you guys way out vote them. Over ride their route and just let them go. They'll then have a reason to ride fast.

Also I would like to see a question asked at the start, "let's see a show of hands of peeps that want to ride fast?" Then you give these guys the info on the ride on Mondays. Let them know that this ride is built on consensus, and alot people want a chill ride. You may still get ridazz that want to be in front, just remember that they don't necessarily dictate the ride route, and change the route. We aren't going anywhere, cause there isn't any there there. It's CM, remember? There is no right route.

The ride last night, the lame ass Catch Me If You Can. And I mean the ride itself, nothing else was lame, but one thing that was way cool was that it was a pace that you could chat with people. This didn't exist on the last CM ride. Let's work on bringing that back with a minimum of changing the spirit of what CM is.

LA Critical Mass was better last summer, when there were people using megaphones herding the group on a predetermined route and rest stops were announced in advance. So if you got lost or had a flat, you knew where the ride was going.
The ride was slower and you could actually talk to people. I met my gf on that ride (sadly she left for Oregon to get her Masters). I rode this past Friday and it was lightening fast.
I think we started with over 300 people and lost a third of them by Echo Park. It seemed out of control until we hit dowtown LA. Then after the girl crashed in the tunnel, some people seemed to figure out that the ride needed to have a direction. They moved up front and led us to Ralphs then to Wal Mart. It moved slower and with more organization.
I know Critical Mass isn't suppose to have leaders or a route, but when it does it seems to work better.

This last LACM was disappointing. A decent sized group, of at least 10, discussed a route and had a plan. I ride daily, and I can ride fast, but I had no desire to keep up with the hustle that flew by and tore down the streets recklessly. Yeah, they weren't just fast. If they were, there wouldn't have been all the ridiculous swerving, and that very nasty crash in the tunnel. I stayed to help the girl that fell, and once she was back up on her feet again, I was resigned to do something more fun than chase this chaotic mess around town. Rides, including LACM, can be chaotic and spontaneous and fun without the hustle and the recklessness.

I think LACM would certainly benefit from a couple coordinated megaphones and some basic, friendly announcements to inform everyone where to go - calling turns, etc.

Ralphs was specifically not a destination before I stopped in the tunnel and the ride continued. It's certainly not a good idea to bring 300 ridazz to the Ralphs on 9th, which has no above-ground parking lot or space for that many people.

Let's think ahead, let's coordinate. Megaphones are certainly great cuz people can recognize them as something to listen to and follow.
