Thread Box:
THANK YOU LAPD
Thread started by Joe Borfo at 06.26.10 - 12:11 am

I would like to thank the LAPD for showing an extraordinary amount of respect to all cyclists on LACM. We didn't feel like we were being hounded on for every infraction. It felt like they were showing real support. All the riders were really impressed on how efficiently the intersections were blocked. (They don't like the word "corked" for some reason.) I'd like to thank Sgt David Krumer, Officer Gordon Helper, and the entire retinue of cops for their positive attitude and cooperation. I have got to say it actually felt good to have the police protecting us.

On the same token I think the riders showed a good attitude overall. Id like to thank everyone who participated for being positive and making the event fun for me. My Fish costume was a little bulky, but it got some laughs, and I got some nice complements for toughing the ride out with it on. I am just trying to show that it helps to make the public smile and have fun watching us ride. It's an interaction.

I think this really is a symbol of the LAPD reaching out and showing that they will support and respect the bike community. In return, let's show them that we can ride in traffic AS TRAFFIC by following all the rules of the road.

Please feel free to express your gratitude on this thread and maybe comments or suggestions that might help them serve us better in the future.

Yes it was really nice.

BUT....I wonder what that cost the City of LA?

It was great, but I somehow don't see how a magnitude of that many police officer justified putting on one of the best rides I have been on in long time.

Sgt David Krumer, can you get us the cost of the operation tonight?

Maybe it was worht the positive PR that happened in this community?

Thank you officers. I hope you had so much fun at work tonight as we did being on the ride :)

I am sure it costs less than all the lawsuits they will get if they use the old style of policing critical mass by tackling cyclists.

We're all tax paying citizens, we deserve having them there, I'm not worrying about the coast. :)

I'm sure it "costs" the city a heck of a lot more to pay traffic officers to drive around all day long and police cars and give them tickets and this is for a good cause.

That was a lot less exciting (in a good way) then I thought it would be. LAPD were definitely supportive and not intrusive. Was quite a pleasure having them with us.

PS. Srgt Krumer is cute...probably because he rides a bike. Just saying. Men in uniform=hot. Men in uniform on bikes=super hot. Just sayin.

Rev. Joe said it well, the word is respect. It was way cool to have the LAPD "host" intersections and it was way cool to get such a positive response from the community and the motorists. Apparently having a giant fish riding a bicycle changes evrything!

Great job by the LAPD. The corking hand-offs between the bike cops and motor cops at intersections was poetry in motion.

Listening to a female voice coming over the loud speaker asking people to Guide Right was a lot less stress inducing than hearing some guy telling you to do the same thing. Also her Good Job acknowledgment after every one moved was a nice touch.

Don't forget to thank the guys behid the scene. While they may not have been riding with you like the bicycle officers they are the ones that made things happen:

Chief Earl Paysinger: Director of Operations
Cmdr Jorge Villegas: Assistant to the Director and bicycle liaison
Chief Debra McCarthy: In charge of West Bureau (the areas through which you ride)
Captain Matt Blake and Captain Brenda Crump: Captains of Olympic Division (where we all met at Wilshire and Western)
Captain Nancy Lauer: Captain of West Traffic (in charge of all the Motorcycles)
and of course Chief Beck who set the stage and the tone for tonights event!

Finally...you saw them riding but you may not know that Sgt Laurel Friedlander and Officer Gordon Helper can be creditied for putting together the nuts and bolts of tonight's operation.

Not to dwell on this, but there is good case against this being a publicity stunt.

I hope the LAPD left with a little understanding of who we are and why we ride, and don't think we are a bunch of reckless hoods. Again it was REALLY great to have WITH us on this ride. TY to you too Borfo for all your efforts working with them. LOL I did not even know it was you in the fish, haha great costume!

I was blown away at the amount of police presents supporting us last night. As a property owner, I can actually say that for the first time I felt my tax dollars were well spent last night. I know this will not be an on going thing but I hope a couple moto units and a few bike patrols would be nice. I would also think a few of you might enjoy coming off duty as well.

I want to take a moment and thank all of you for inviting my partner's and I on this epic ride. I know it's been said already, but you guys had up to 2000 cyclists attend your ride and it was AWESOME!!! The front pack tried to crank it up on me but I think after the first 10 miles they knew that they could not lose me. Not that they were trying or anything, it was all in good fun. I love being challenged to a good race and then beating a fixie on a mountain bike. I hope to be attending as long as LACM and the Midnightridazz invite me.

I want to thank Joe, Alex, Mr and Mrs Box, Cinncianti (you know who you are) girlpower and all others who allowed me to participate in uniform and represent the Los Angeles Police Department...forgive me if I forgot anyone. Oh and Ms. Strong. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you....

Good to see you there Officer Helper. That was a very brisk first 10 miles - I remember a few Critical Masses in the bad old days where strong runners could run with the ride - not last night!

@slowrighthand

Maybe it was a publicity stunt. I don't think it was. But if you were there, would have seen that as the ride went on, officers got more and more relaxed, more and more joyous, hearts were pumping, endorphins were slamming into their brains, exhilaration was the feeling we all had. That part isn't fakable. 60 officers, comprising 6% of the department and 600 cyclists comprising 1% of die hard riders crossed the gap and made thousands of new friendships - there's no going back now.

If it were a publicity stunt - here's the obvious strategy. Celebrate this day, as we should, in perpetuity, so that it's clear to all involved that working together in friendship, mutual support, this is far more desirable than conflict. Build on that exhilaration by celebrating this every day till the next critical mass, and I guarantee, it will be impossible to do anything but support one another at the next ride.

There are two enormous groups of people in this city who hit the streets day after day despite mortal dangers that await for them their. Both groups are stubborn, both groups have deep convictions, both groups are a little different from typical citizens, and both groups have the well worn courage that comes from looking danger in the face every day and carrying on. What we should have known, and what I believe we are now learning, is that cyclists and cops should have a natural kinship on those grounds. Yeah, there's gonna be bumps in the road, and there have been bumps in the road - but it's the conviction that we should work together that's getting us through those.

Last night was amazing and I still feel a bit electrified. I hope that we can channel this energy into positive change (more sharrows and lanes!) for our city streets and the lives of all cyclists, pedestrians and even motorists. Given the amount of positive feedback towards our fun we got from peds and motorists along Hollywood Blvd and elsewhere, I'm sure a bunch of new people are going to give biking a try next month.

A BIG thank you to everyone who went and the LAPD for helping us as well. Publicity stunt or not, I'm glad the LAPD got to see us, get to know us, and what we really are. I'm glad they understand our need for corking and I also like how they talked to the cars they were corking.

I know a few times when the LAPD wasn't there a few times I had to cork a few turns and talked with the motorist and they weren't pissed, they were intrigued. I talked to the car until a motorcycle cop came and took my place.

Maybe next month when a LAPD motorcycle sees someone corking, they could take over, or at least understand we're not doing anything "wrong."

Glad I got a chance to ride with the mountain bike cops and even see one cop do a wheelie on his bike. I'd say they've regained my trust.

Toney Would Go
06.26.10 - 12:55 pm

reply

I think the LAPD would disagree with you, Toney. They would say that "corking" is not allowed and they prefer us to stop at red lights. However, they would also say that it is best to do what is needed to keep everyone safe. So, you will get no admission from them that they support civilians to practice road guarding. It is okay for the LAPD to decide or be asked to perform that action, but they can not admit that corking is acceptable for us to do. I'm just correcting how we should be wording things around the LAPD.

They gained a lot of understanding on how the ride works and what is involved. Their wish is for us to try to police ourselves better for the safety of all.

Awwwww man - MATH FAIL. 60 officers isn't 6% of the department, it's 0.6%. That's embarrassing - I should have my math license revoked.

The point remains - a huge rapport was established between significant proportions of both sides.

You know what I sincerely loved about last night? It brought me back to when I was a kid and the cops used to be heros on tv (chips adam12 etc) and you could walk up to a motorcycle cop and he'd give you a dodgers baseball card and you'd be stoked.

It felt like the LAPD was taking some risks and participating and in the process enjoying themselves. It felt like "the people" had their day.

Sure, you can call it a publicity stunt, but I'd prefer to call it reconciliation.

When I heard on the loudspeaker that the LAPD supports our right to the road I really felt like it was a historic moment for critical mass.

Thanks to Krumer Helper Blake and Central division.

Was a fun ride, hope the officers enjoyed it too. Some people boo'd the police presence at the beginning of the ride which was lame--cops have feelings too, people. All of the cops on bicycles were very respectful and good company. There were people blatantly ignoring officers' suggestions to stay on the right side of the double yellows. I told one officer that no-one in the group would complain if he cited those people riding on the wrong side of the road. He said that this ride wasn't about that for him. He just didn't want to see anyone get killed.

Good job on nailing the tagger.

Thats the amazing part, that people were still riding on the opposite side of the road even though the police were there. Someone got caught for tagging? When did that happen?

Although I didn't make Critical Mass last night (someone's got to hold it down here on the forums) I did get a chance to meet Sgt. David Krumer today at the Eastside Bike Club BBQ. I have to say he is an asset to the LAPD. We had a good conversation and I feel he cares about cyclist and their perils riding the mean streets of Los Angeles.

Thanks again LAPD for reaching out to the community.

To answer your question:

"I talked to officer Krumer about 15 mins before the ride finished. He told me people got arrexted for vandalism and that was it. I heard a 3rd person got busted after that.

But as far as I could tell the only arrests were for graffiti.
I personally had one of my very funniest rides in a LONG time!"

It was impressive to see the police working so hard to block intersections, and to see that the police presence was not going to be one of aggression, which is their typical mode in my experience.

What really tugged at my heart strings, however, was later on in the ride. I was behind three police and three civilianz, and they were riding together. Not talking or anything, just being tired and excited and sharing the same pace and the same city. At that moment I remembered my first ride and how life changing it was, and I realized that all those cops were on their first ride, too.

I only have one small complaint/suggestion, later in the ride, one of the cops on motorcycles kept honking this really loud horn, it was annoying an ineffective (he got yelled at for hurting peoples ears) since no one knew what he was trying to communicate.

It would be better if they were not there at all, just the cycle officers are all that is needed, and if they do want to let riders know they need to stay out of on-coming traffic then just say that on their loudspeaker - becasue the horns made no sense to anyone - least of all the people riding against traffic, they just figured it was meant for something else.

I do think it could have just been cops on bikes. They could use the training and it would be cheaper overall for the LAPD to implement.

Perhaps they can bring this up at the next LAPD meeting next month?

All ideas listed on this Blog will be shared with the Task Force. I'm sure Sgt Krummer will make sure of that...and the plug on YOUTUBE was awesome...I don't think it was that the Officer's could not keep up but that we were placed in different areas in the pact so we could hold intersections for the cyclists. It's effective road guarding and it protects all cyclists involved...having said that, the plug on YOUTUBE was awesome...

It was the cops on motorcycles making that loud noise, not the ones on bicycles. :)

"and trying to keep up with a fairly brisk ride on fattie tires."

Maybe for the LACM ride they officers on bicycles can switch out their ties for 29 inch 700 tires, those are really fast and they hold up well on the road, in fact, they may be better than the dirt bike tires currently in use.

Officer bikes; They ride a dirt bike hybrid by Giant. This tire looks good: http://www.adrenalinebikes.com/store.cfm?do=DetailProduct&productid=102103

It's thicker tread more like a dirt bike currently in use, and if the 29" is too large for the Giant frame then they can go down to the rigtht size.

Here are other 700c options that may work and some may be better options for their use even when not on a LACM ride.

Those didn't look like hybrids to me, I thought those were hard tails they were riding. When I first started doing these rides, I used my mountain bike and always had a hard time keeping up.

We also shouldn't forget that the LAPD was packing a lot more equipment on themselves and on their bikes than we need to carry. The bikes themselves weren't that light. So I have to hand it to them, they were doing very well on the ride. I'm guessing they were hauling an extra 30 pounds of stuff, that ought to slow anyone down. I'm guessing for the type of patrol work they do, 700c would not be the way to go.

I do just fine with my heavily-laden MTB on all the rides.
With the lights, horns, batteries, system and tools/equipment on board, I'm easily pushing 60-70lbs on any given night.

Yeah I was the one on the blog poking fun at some of the bike cops getting dropped. All in good fun. But serious, guys like Bentstrider big Bike Dan Laharr and JohnnyBoy Ceasar are rolling with sound systems backbacks and equipment easily in the 60lb + range and going longer.

I'd like to see LAPD move more of it's force to bikes. It would save money and change their point of view about what we face as bike riders.

On another note, I'd like to point out the obvious, that the love feat being shown to LAPD hear and on all the blogs is PrOOF PoSITIVE that most in the cycling community and LACM including the kids are not out to cause trouble we're out to promote our cause and having the LAPD join in and support that cause was like a turning point for the city.

Bike riding is the way out of traffic, the way out of smog, it's a positive activity for the inner city youth who little space to get out and get excercise. It's a solve for so many things... If everyone rode a bike for trips of less than 5 miles imagine what LA would be like!!

Yes, I was present at LACM... And gotta say; I was static to see LAPD officers getting their ridding cherry popped... They couldn't hold a straight face, reminded me of d day I got my ridding cherry popped.

Thanks 2 everyone that made this happen.

Thanks 2 Chunkylover09 4 keeping it real & having my back. The turn-out was was great & hope 2 keep the relations with the LAPD going, as it was great not having 2 worry about cops 4 one ride... Let's hope this is not just charades until the news of more abuse come 2 light. I heard there was an incident that happened that may blemish this weekends events but, hopefully not... I gotta say it seems like the start of a good thing; hope we (both sides) can keep it going...
