If you watch the vid, the one that got killed was a lady on her bicycle, walking it across the street with the other two. News reporting probably thinks 'pedestrian killed' sounds more victimized than 'bicyclist killed' or maybe they just wanted to generalize all three were on foot at the time.

Ghostbike is a good idea for that intersection, User1. I didn't take my bike to work yesterday, but that's my bike route. Or was. A coworker of mine has also been biking via Fountain, and yesterday she almost got hit at Fountain and Sunset by an SUV not watching the road just before this happened. Like minutes before - she left work at 6:10.

So now, I'm really rattled. I've been trying to devise some alternate routes through West Hollywood, and De Longpre is all right, but it stops abruptly for about five blocks. The options are Fountain and Sunset, and that's a rather hairy impatient driver part of Fountain.

Does anybody have any great ideas for commuting that area, specifically east/west between Highland and Fairfax? Selma a/k/a Hawthorne breaks up a lot, as does De Longpre, and drivers are just so aggro on Sunset and Fountain in the evening trying to get home.

BellBeefer
04.1.09 - 1:25 pm

And Fountain IS good for a great deal of the route, it's just that there are these nasty pockets where there is a ton of fast traffic, lots of parked cars, and a very narrow street...

At first I just thought I was being a sissy, but frumble took it with me one evening and thought it was overall sort of sketchy. "You need to find a new route!"

The black Trek laying on the sidewalk in the video is my friend's bike. He witnessed the accident and did what he could to help. Unfortunately one of the ladies died in his arms. He said one of her legs was all but torn off. He's still pretty shaken up over the whole thing.

Wow, my condolences to the families. If we can get the info on the people that died. The correct spelling of the names and maybe ages, a couple of small details like a father/mother, or something. Also the exact corner and spot where the accident took place. I can see that there's a ghost bike there. I'll do it myself if no one wants to help. But I think someone will by the end of the day.

If cars weren't so damn big and heavy, peds and cyclists would have a better chance for survival. Momentum = Mass x Velocity....

Building bigger and heavier cars to "protect" occupants is like the battle for who's has more nukes during the Cold War. The cars in this accident were normal sedans (don't know what sedan means to be honest), but even these cars are heavy when compared to SmartCars, and other tiny European models.

Hey, as far as commuting through that area (I live near that Target on SMB and La Brea), maybe we could bikepool. You know, like meet up and ride together? Safety in numbers.

At the very least we should start riding together! Add my Facebook and MySpace shit!

I really don't know what it is with the drivers here in Hollywood. I've been hassled so much by people lately...honking at me and yelling at me on like, residential streets! With kids running around on them!

I got up close to two Ghost Bikes when I was in Tucson recently.
I wanted to see how they were constructed for future refrence.
All the detatchables were taken off, down to even the chain. The fork and cranks were welded to the frame.
A metal sheet was welded to the triangle for the sign. Per the photo, the rear wheel was cast in a cement block. Not sure if that would work on an urban sidewalk. Maybe better to chain it to a out of the way post. Even then, in the city, I don't think it would be long before the city hauls it away.
Unless we could get a business owner to agree to let us install it on their property, maybe for a limited time like a month or three.

User1

@ Bellbeefer - I ride thru that area everyday. Hollywood Blvd. is ok, because it's usually clogged, so there's not much fast traffic.
Also try Santa Monica Blvd. I ride it everyday, usu. between La Brea and Doheny, but often up to Western as well.

When you encounter dangerous/aggressive drivers, take down their plate number. Pull onto to curb and do it. The traffic is often tight, so you have plenty of time. Put them in the bikexdatabase.

http://bikexdatabase.com/

The site says:
Almost counts. Any situation when a cyclist is almost hit by a car is considered an incident worthy of submission. Any situation when a cyclist feels endangered by a vehicle, or harassed by a driver with the specific intent to intimidate the cyclist off the road. Submit cars that pass too close, or too fast. Parked drivers that open doors without checking for oncoming cyclists. Submit cell phone drivers, drivers creeping or rolling through intersections, or right turning while a cyclist is waiting at the curb for a light to change. Also honking, with the intent to bully a cyclist off the road, especially riding the horn directly behind a cyclist. Screaming, shouting, or throwing things from the window of a vehicle at a cyclist. Obviously, any physical contact with a vehicle, even if there is no damage to the bicycle or the cyclist, is an incident.

kryxtanicole - Thanks for the tips there. I had never thought of Hollywood, but you're right; at that time of day it's just a line of stopped cars. Stopped cars don't have a chance to be aggressive. Har.

In addition, I think I finally found an excellent, if a little snaky, route using Hawthorne, Poinsettia, Sunset and De Longpre. Almost like riding in a suburb, even at rush hour!

If this is somehow put together for today or tomorrow I can still help.

There's a few people above that offered a bike. It would be easiest and fastest if there was a bike that needed no or little cleaning. Who has one that isn't greasy? I would like to get either a quart or gallon of white at Home Depot, unless someone has some paint. I rather use a brush than spray paint cause it can go on thicker and it gives a haunting look to it. I don't think we need to worry about welding stuff together. Anyone taking off parts that have paint caked on it sound pretty freaking desperate and deserves the parts at that point.

Sadly I don't even know what the condition of the three person is. We need to get the info on the three people involved.

Anyone have a sign in mind?

Adam, what's the hours we can work on this tomorrow(wed)?

@adamthelizard

First of all, I am so sorry for the passing of your little scaled pal. That stuff is hard. Remember to take care of yourself and remember all the good times.

I can come after 3:30ish and I am good all night on Wednesday.

I've never done anything like this before. I am volunteering to collect the information on the cyclist (And everything else)...how do I go about doing it? I can work on it in between tasks at work tomorrow.

HappyLand

HappyLand,

You can start on getting info from those people that blog about LA. I don't have all the names handy, but I can start out sending a message to Stephen Box and see if he knows, or who does. I'll post up something when I find out.

I bought some paint tonight at Home Depot, so we have the paint.

It really doesn't make much sense on scheduling if we don't have a bike and don't know when it's going to be over at Adam's place.

My bad for not mentioning anything about the passing of your lizard Adam. I know it's hard to lose a pet after 12 years of companionship. It happened to me with a loved dog I had. Wish you the best.

So when can we get a bike to start working on?

Back in the mix by Wednesday of next week.
I'm wanting to see this happen.
Let's stay on it.

Yeah, I agree that this needs to be done, so let's keep this thread alive.

I was driving that way last night (Hey don't judge), and I saw the flowers, and my heart broke. I wanted to cry.

I'm looking up stuff on the accident...and it's difficult to discern which was the cyclist since every story I've come across thus far has identified them as pedestrians. How can I confirm?

come pull a frame out of my backyard. i'm assuming since it's not meant to be ridden, the size or quality of the frame shouldn't matter. correct?

It just needs to have wheels, crank, pedals, seat, and handlebars. Preferably something that doesn't need to be degreased. An adult size frame would also be requested.

I sent a message off to Mr. Box, haven't heard anything back yet. Who has a lock? Chain and padlock maybe? Even a cable may do. I really don't see thieves taking this crap, and the city could cut it if it's cable or u-lock.

I would be into donating some funds to purchasing a chain to lock the bike up with.

And I would also be down to go pick up a bike somewhere.

Lets see what we get for donations. Looks like this will have to be put off till next week. I think it would be more appropriate any ways sense there's a memorial there now.

We still need to be on top of this though and be ready next week.

@petzljake, we're discussing it here so more people can get on board, such as yourself.

@Adam, damn, didn't you just have a cast taken off? Sounds like you're hitting a streak of bad luck? I haven't given up on this yet. I guess we I can see if one of the coops has a donor bike.

@Happyland, which bike coop are you closest?

I still have a bike for you guys!
It's a Nirve city bike from 2001 or earlier- been kept outside for 5 years at least, and isn't really worth making rideable. Since Adam's no longer available, you could also do the work at my place. What works for everyone?

Is the bike pretty much grease free? I'm not sure how far Happyland can go to get the bike. Hopefully she'll be reading the boards tonite.

User1

Yeah, I've cleaned it up quite a bit. The only grease is at metal-on-metal points of contact. It's the derailleur and cables that make it unrideable, and you take those off ghost bikes anyways.

@User1

Well, I'm sort of right smack in the middle of everything, so I am equidistant from Bike Kitchen and Bikerowave.

Good to see that we are keeping on this. Last time I passed that spot (On Sunday), the makeshift memorial was gone, and it sort of made me mad.

@Adam, what day would be good to do this project? We need the bike at Adams before everyone arrives, if that's possible.

I'm working on the names of the fatalities. I'll put up a complete list Friday of everything. It's next week or never.

User1

Hey, the more I'm researching this, the more I'm coming under the conclusion that there was no bicyclist involved. I'm reading it as two pedestrians hit in the crosswalk.

Stephen Box is quoted as saying, "This past Tuesday night, at 6:25 in the evening, Alina Sheyman and Maria Velasquez, both in their 70's, were killed in the crosswalk of Fountain & La Brea when a left turning car hit another car and caused it to spin out of control, killing the two women. (This intersection is the border of Los Angeles and West Hollywood.) The motorists were released." click here

LATimes article states somewhat the same thing, click here

And yet one more, la.metblogs.com

Other than the age of the victims, they all seem to be calling these two unfortunate people, pedestrians. So I guess we should hold off Project Ghost Bike till it's actually needed. And sadly it will one day.

User1

IIRC, the woman was walking her bicycle across the street when she was hit. Are ghost bikes only for riders who were hit while on their bikes?

danya
04.17.09 - 12:55 pm

reply

Sarah, where's the article that states the woman was walking her bike?

The first sentence on wiki regarding ghost bikes, " A ghost bike or ghostcycle is a bicycle set up in a place where a cyclist has been hurt or killed. "

I always thought it was for when there was a fatality. I guess it's for people that have been injured too. I don't get that part.

User1
04.17.09 - 5:17 pm

reply

I guess it depends what the attitude towards ghost bicycles is in individual cities- Only for cyclists killed in where they're viewed strictly as memorials, also for cyclists injured where they're seen as reminders/protests to cars. Also, keep in mind just how severe these collisions can be- a comatose cyclist probably deserves a ghost bike as much as a dead one.

If you watch the video on the first link of this thread, they show the woman's bicycle and discuss the victims at 0:57-1:08.

danya
04.17.09 - 5:25 pm

reply

OK the video said that the woman with the bike died at the scene. I think I can go back and figure out which woman that is by rereading the articles.

Looks like the only ones to report it as a bicyclist was Fox.

Will that make it official?

I think it's a good start, but I'm working single handed..
Literally, and I've done what I can laborwise.

So who's gonna do something?
I think we're a tube of 2 part epoxy, a can of white spraypaint, and a lock away from a complete machine that we can put to use already.
That plus some time and energy.

Happy Land?
aksendz?
apineda?
User1?
Etc etc..

What up party people?

This could just as easily become the ghost bike for the victim of that drunk driver who killed a rider last night.

Sorry I can't offer more than that at the moment.

I'm okay with it either way, I donated it to be a ghost bike, it doesn't matter which person it's for.
Btw, maybe we should make some sort of semi-official ghost bike committee? We could research and put up bikes for all of the cyclists killed in recent years, instead of haphazardly having a bike put up on the occasion that the death reaches the news.

The bike was finished and put up late last night. In the end I found it rather silly to consider giving preference to one victim over the other cause that victim had a bike. Two people lost their lives here that had nothing to do with this car vs car accident. They both deserved the same respect and consideration.

I went ahead and did this project on my own cause it was just dragging on with others involved. We weren't going to be able to work and get this done until the weekend at Adam's place. To me that was unacceptable. They died close to three weeks ago.

I want to thank Veronica, Steve, and Joseph for helping out. I saw yesterday just how valuable you guys are to the community. This couldn't have been done without you guys! And thanks Joseph for donating the U-lock.

You guys got to stop by and see the Flying Pigeons shop. It's looking very cool!

For the record, I did the best I could.

User1 is a very unique person to deal with.

I am glad you created a memorial, but doing the research (which you said you would do) was very easy and yielded the following response from Stephen Box:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Adam,

It appears at this time that there were three victims, two fatals and one still hospitalized but none of them cyclists. There was a cyclist there, there was a bike in one of the pics but the LASD (unconfirmed until tomorrow) says no cyclist fatality.

I'm still waiting for Detective Nelson to confirm tomorrow.

I trust you are healing quickly!

Best!

Stephen

So perhaps this one will keep some cyclist from becoming a ghost!

But, it's probably NOT related to an actual car/bike incident.
