Dumpster Ride
Thread started by thinkpeace at 04.27.09 - 12:14 pm

On May 22, 2009 in Pasadena, join us for an evening of bike riding, dumpster diving and sharing a meal. We will bike to supermarket dumpsters and rescue discarded good quality food. At the end of the ride we will cook a meal together.

Anybody want to help out on this ride? I need a few people to help lead it.

My plan is to split into groups and each group will stop at different bins along the same route. We will also have stopping points were all groups will stop.

We'll end at a church which is not far from the start and it has a large kitchen and banquet hall.

@sciencefriction,
This ride isn't about finding food because were hungry, it's more of a look into the amount of waste our food system creates. It's also a look into freegan philosophy. Still, the burrito project is a great idea!

Freegan Visions
(from http://freegan.info/?page_id=180)

As freegans we liberate not only goods but also the moments of our lives. Hours not spent carrying out the hollow directives of bosses are instead spent free for we need not make money to acquire goods that we won’t buy. Our time is instead spent directly acquiring the things we need, enjoying our time, or working to create a better world.

We believe ultimately that our consumption practices, while important and even revolutionary if practiced en masse, must only be one small thread as we weave the fabric of a new society and mend the garment of the old.

@Limefly,
Yes, good point about not getting bad publicity. We will give clear instructions on dumpster etiquette. Here's some of the main points.

1. Be extra polite to anyone you encounter, even if they are not being polite.
2. If an employee or security guard asks you to leave, do so.
3. Don't leave a mess. If there's trash around the bin, clean it up even if it was there already before you came.
4. If near residences keep quiet so as to not disturbing the tenants.
5. Don't steal the plastic crates.
6. Go late after the employees are all gone (some places don't really care so you can go any time, ask some experienced bin raiders about this)
7. Don't fight over dumpster findings. If there are other people taking stuff from the bins, let them take whatever they want, or help them get stuff out. They may need it more than you.

We will be limiting the number of people going to each bin so that we attract less attention. Don't worry, there are plenty of them to raid.

Yeah, you gotta know which are the right stores, and even then it's a lot of hit and miss (fun unpredictability!). Some stores don't throw stuff every night, and there are a lot of locked ones, unfortunately. Anyway, if you come, you'll totally see how it goes! You're coming, right?

I love the pic, Eric! :P

dumpster_kittyG

@user1 - It's not just in Pasadena that food is wasted, it's pretty much everywhere in the 1st world. The reason the event is in Pasadena is because I live in Pasadena and I know the dumpsters in that area.

Yesterday and I saw perfectly good food thrown out at stores in Highland Park and Boyle Heights. Most stores in L.A. lock their dumpster, but you can be sure they are wasting lots of good food as well.

@dumpster kittity, I agree - its hit and miss. Some stores lock up their dumpsters and others don't. Some stores throw good stuff out pretty much every day and others only on certain days.

as a teen, back in the mid-90's, a number of writer (tagger)/party (underground)/drug friends use to have a similar etiquette.

They would only drink from beverages that were still cold, meaning they were recently left behind. Bag of chips were like gold... i think we were all pretty poor hanging out on Melrose... looking at peace books.... talking about hiphop, rock, and getting...

Good to know sober (?) kids are still at it. Or at least with more reason then the munchies and being broke. I still think its funny this is done on principle and from a conviction about a better world

Freegans.... just like consumerism, the movements never stop... soon Puma and Nike will be promoting their Freegan shoes, made from materials found in dumpsters, and all the rich kids will buy them up, and Kanye West will claim he's been dumpster diving all his tracks since way back when

cant wait til all the hipster clothing is back in the dumpsters... surely we'll leave those threads to rest in peace ( i hope).

have fun... wish i could go... seriously... i think its a good thing for people to do, but be safe...

Hey I was just at the Library using the Pubax 'puter and saw this post.

I am a South Bay mobile dweller. Live out of a '77 Dodge Maxivan.

Not exactly a freegan but similar. I try to totally minimize consumption. Move the van only when I have to to avoid the heat.

I usually wear clothes I find in alleys.

I get around mainly by bicycle. I find old bikes and fix them. I have a nice storage space in Harbor City where I have my shop. No power, no lights, everything by hand during daylight.

The mgr of the storage facility looks the other way on me running a bike shop out my storage.

You get the idea. Anyway I like the notion of free food. I want to come on this ride and pick up some pointers.

My name is Pete Moss and I'm 50 yr old cauc male. Worked 13 yrs as a bike mess in Frisco then another 10 as a motomess in LA.

Currently I drive a forklift for Dow Chemicals in Torrance. Dow chems is totaslly NOT freegan in anyway shape or form. But they're going out of business in August, KARMA?

I'll be riding a red Mongoose one speed coaster brake 'Little Indy Special'.

Ur all going to hell for being such wasteful consumers!!!

This event was awesome. Thanks Eric and friends for putting this together, had a blast and it was most enlightening.

We had ourselves a fest! Salmon, steaks, salad, I think four different GREAT quality cheeses, a variety of breads, shrooms, blueberries, neff eggs to start a war, and who knows what else. I'm sure I'm forgetting crap. Anyways we could have feed an army!

Hope this becomes a monthly get together!

Thanks to everyone who came out to dumpster dive.

We found lot's of great food, including blueberries, eggs, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, apples, break, salmon, talapia, pork, chicken, lots of Persian cucumbers , fresh basil, a case of humus (less one or two broken tubs), milk, cheese filled tortellinis, cheese, break, cake, mushrooms, onions, green onions, flowers and watermelons.

Many of us pitched in to cook what turned out to be a delicious meal. We had a few bottles wine (perhaps the only thing not from a dumpster) to go with the meal (drank most of it while cooking though).

Wow, what a fun that was! It was very well planned out... especially the place where we cooked the meal, it has such a great vibe! I had no idea the quality of food would be so great coming from a dumpster. Thank you for the eye-opening excursion, and hosting such a great ride...I would love to go again!

I'll go next month, if that is any incentive. All the way out to Pasadena yes I will. Need to add the dumpster diving badge to my anarchist uniform as my Charizard will no longer respect me (too high level).

Dumpster Ride #3 - Downtown to Pasadena
Friday, August 14th, 8:30 PM

Union Station, The Patsaouras Transit Plaza
Join us on a bin raiding mission starting at Union Station and heading to Pasadena and back. We'll take the train from Union Station and return by bike, stopping to rescue food from dumpsters along the way. Bring $1.25 for the train. It's about 14 miles, mostly downhill.

Some of the food collected will be served at a dinner party the next day. To find out about the party, come to the ride.
