The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment of Time #433 - Meatballs

12.13.17

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

Meatballs


More and more these days, it can seem that people are increasingly illogical, increasingly irrational. They hold ridiculous beliefs and opinions and support ridiculous causes and people. Close inspection often reveals, however, that people are indeed being logical, but that they are mistaking that logic for rationality.

Logic is an internally consistent way of thinking. It is formal. The more you reduce the variables, the easier it is to be logical. If they only read one book or get their news from one source, it is very easy indeed to trace the logic of someone's thinking. A=B and B=C, so A=C. Never mind X, Y, or Z. Logic of this sort is, no doubt, very comforting.

Rationality, on the other hand, involves establishing verifiable facts and, moreover, determining which facts are most relevant. Logic plays its part, but logic alone will not guarantee a rational position. Rationality requires judgment — but then with it, also, doubt. If logic seeks internal coherence, rationality seeks alignment with an external reality or goal.

Which brings us to Meatballs. For there is an indisputable logic to this week's theme, which will become perfectly clear in the course of the ride. And yet, at the same time, it is completely irrational. There is no reason Meatballs should be the theme. And yet here it is. And here we shall ride, somewhere between comfort and doubt.
