I like the quote from the bikeshop dude on ebikes:
"The technology has come a long way and I do think they're better than using a car -- but I just think it's lazy Americanism," Binegar says. "It's like we're still trying to avoid doing some work that isn't that hard -- work that will make you feel great."

I think e-bikes are great if they have a pedalec assist, meaning you still have to petal to get some assistance. I know that th argument is that it makes you lazy, that is actually not true.
I would bicycle much longer distances with the peace of mind that I knew I could back to my start point if I had run out of energy or if I could surmount high inclines and hills on my destination. We are not all fit twenty something men, some of us actually could use the help in order to cycle longer and farther.

Electric bikes are a great way of getting people who don't feel like getting too sweaty commuting to work... or who live in hilly areas and need assistance... or who are in their 40's and above (especially seniors love it)... they have a lot of appeal and often times it gets people to START bicycling and they fall in love with it... hopefully in the next few years energy density of commercial batteries will be higher (and maybe charge times lower)
