i ride a singlespeed 29er. my favorite bike i own. just slapped on a new fork and now it's a white knuckle cross country machine @ 34 lbs. My friend just build his "96" (29 front, 26 rear) using my old fork. its super fun to ride.
there was an american bike company in the 80's, forgot the name of it, that built a rigid mountain bike with a 28.5" front tire and a 26" rear.
don't know about the 36 in. wheels though. looks like it has the turning ratio of a hummer in Chinatown. wouldn't even think about taking tires that size to the mountain.
