i need advice

so the monday of last week i was hit by a car. details are not important, but the driver admitted it was her fault (which it was) and was really kind and remorseful about the while thing. I took my bike to the shop and their estimate was about $320 but i only bought this bike (an 18 speed raleigh roadbike with shimano 105 componants) about a month ago for $200 from someone on this site. I now have a personal injury lawyer because I have to go to the chiropractor for 6 weeks. So eventually there will be some sort of settlement to pay for my bike, the medical bills etc. But i won't get the money for a few months probably due to our slow legal system. In the mean time I have been without a bike. I have my older bike but it is not rideable at the moment unless I spend money on it. So basically I would have to spend the 320 myself and be reimbursed later.
My dilemna is this:
Should I spend the 320 to fix the road bike? or just pay for an entirely new bike (a fixed gear because ive been wanting one anyway) and then later on just buy the new parts and fix the roadbike myself at the bikerowave so that I don't need to pay for labor. essentially, I want two bikes, one geared, one fixed.
i hope that is clear enough because i don't express myself very well sometimes.
I am grateful for any advice.

Whats up with the road bike? Any idea of what needs to be done? Ive got some mostly olderish odds and ends parts that you might be able to use.

yeah it needs a new chain, derailleur, brake levers, bar tape
front wheel needs to be trued, rear wheel probably needs to be replaced.

Oh no Frozen!
I hope you're doing OK.
My advice would be to buy the fixie you've been wanting for now, as if you've had medical treatments and the woman admitted fault and you've got a lawyer, you should have more than enough to cover a new road bike when you finally get paid (and hopefully a decent sum left over as well.)
Do not settle until you've been thoroughly checked out by your doctor and maybe an orthopedist as well. You want to make sure you're fully healthy, because once you settle, you sign away your right to future treatment for this incident.

I wouldnt worry about the bar tape, haha. ive got a rear wheel you can have if it works for you and two or so not-so-awesome derailleurs.

yes i am indeed ok. just got some scrapes. and my neck and back are kinda fucked up. as in my neck bone is now straight instead of having that natural curve. i'm just annoyed with the whole situation.
i just want to ride my bike. :/

haha i know i was just writing what was on the estimate...so you would see how it added up to 320.
hmmm....but yes i would be interested in the rear wheel probably.

Please see an orthopedist to make sure that's not something more serious. Chiropractors have their place, but if your bones are seriously out of whack, you want an MD with a board certification in orthopedic medicine to make sure everything's cool.

keep in mind that settlements are normally 3 x's the medical bills. the doctor, lawyer, and you will each get 1/3. Most personal injury lawyers are shady and have hookups with chiropractors to get the victim racking up medical bills as quick as possible. Those types of injuries are so hard to disprove that it's just money in the bank basically.......and the lawyer knows it. I think they're called soft tissue injuries....

+1Barleye. That's usually how it works, but if you've got bones noticeably out of whack (as opposed to lingering muscle sprains, etc.), it's time to call in the MDs.

i went to a doctor first. The chiropractor i'm seeing works in the same office with the MD.
and the doctor i went to see is actually a friend of my dads, a really good guy, as well as the lawyer. all really good people although i know that doesnt PROVE they arnt trying to make money but i trust them.

prices quoted from bikeisland.com, you can get a lower priced chain elsewhere, this quote is also assuming angrytoaster30's rear wheel works for you, and if his derailleurs fit your bike lower that total to $39 + front wheel truing
i don't see how the parts listed + labor = 320$ (now that i think about it i bet that shop that quoted you was planning to charge you lotsa cash for that rear wheel)

Because there's a difference between Shimano 105 parts and generic bikeisland parts.
