MARINO - unwelcoming to new riders?

In a post about a cyclist hit by a police car - marino makes some statements that sound more like personal opinion than fact. And statements that ask "Who is Justin? How come nobody knows him? How often has he come to the rides?"
Makes me wonder who marino is?
Here in San Diego, we welcome new cyclist on our rides. Justin was visiting LA for his first time on this ride - a group of San Diego people went up. We stick together as a group here.
I don't think that somebody should have to be an established part of marino's circle of friends to get support from the biking community.

Hi, Marino has large fangs, huge claws, and a set of powerful hind quarters, but he is also extremely cuddly and has a soft, shiny fur coat.

Marino brought up valid points, questions I wanted to ask myself. Are we sending a wrong message by rewarding bad behavior.
Also don't introduce geography as another factor for divisiveness by saying " In SD........". MR is all inclusive everywhere but it does not mean we follow blindly.

Not one of Marino's statements said... "I saw" bad behavior from Justin.
We cannot just assume everything we hear on a message board is correct. Therefore, the only people who should be telling the story are those who saw it happen.
Not one of the witnesses that has come forward and emailed them has stated that the kid used his bike as a weapon, but that he put it between them to keep the cop off him.
I personally am really interested to see if the police car's camera was rolling.

I was not on the ride and don't know specifically, or even approximately what happened. However, in my relatively short time riding on MR nights I've seen a shocking amount of abusive police tactics. Cops, unfortunately, often live up to their stereotype as bullies... look at the Franz incident and the SMCM difficulties. On face value, my inclination is to look more suspiciously on a cop's actions than on those of a bicyclist out having a little fun.

SD or LA has nothing to do with this. I live in SD, as many of you know and LA has shown SD nothing but love(dodge ball aside). They have been so welcoming to me and all my friends and every time I hear SD mentioned it's we love SD this and SD ridazz are cool that. Oh, and Where is Katie Kelly.....that one is constant.
I didn't see it happen, so I can't speak to what went on. I will say I talked to an SD friend who did see it and wants nothing to do with it. So don't lay this on geography.
As for Marino, I don't always agree with his point of view or arguments.
But I have always found him to be intelligent and well reasoned.
I have great respect for his willingness to put it on the line as he sees it.

Then three people in the next five minutes came by and all of them said, "hey Katie where is Drew?"

You're welcome, as always. I certainly wouldn't want to reward your bad behavior by ignoring it. Think of the negative image that would create for us!
I'll make it as simple as possible: criticizing a cop for recklessly abusing his power (if he did) in response to a citizen's bad behavior (if there was any) isn't 'rewarding bad behavior." And in any case, what the fuck part of being in jail with broken bones is a reward?

Problem is are we using our resources optimally? A few weeks ago there was the Franz incident, which cause a stir in this forum. There was a lot of talk about police brutality and all. Turns out that there were other things that led to Franz' arrest. He was not the innocent, unassuming rida that some people portrayed him to be.
This weekend, another rida gets arrested in a different set of circumstances. Again the drama and detail of police brutality get played on this forum.
But we can't get everyone up in arms every single time, it will get old. I know the activists like yourself, AT, Sexy ...etc. will act with the same commitment every time, but not everyone is like you. I'm afraid a time will come when we will really need for people to come together but by them we might have already stroked all our matches.

you raise valid points there, those that care will care, those that don't won't. Riding bikes on the street may be second nature to many of us, but it isn't to the majority of the people that live here. It is scary and can be percieved as dangerous, by those who don't desire it like we do. Some people come to MR just to have fun, many of those may never ride a bike anywhere else and would probably not help someone else when they are in a bind like this situation
I think it is important that we hash these things out. What happens in each individual instance is just that, individual. Franz situation was Franz situation, the police did act heavy handed with him. This situation from all the account of what I'm hearing is that the police where way outta line.
What does this all have to do with Katie Kelly?

he ended up under a pickup truck, and I helped him find his phone with my bike light.
