can heavy rain fuck up my derailleur ?

i just got the baby fixed a couple days ago.

IDK if my cables are too tight, chain rusted, or what, but I'd like to not be an idiot when I go back to the bike shop I went to for my first time.

Rust can cause your bike not to shift well of smoothly, a few daps of any kind of spray lube and running through the gears will keep your cables freed up.

Well yeah.

I had wanted to change my chain as my bike spent some time at the beach but the guy looking at it said replacing the chain would be "purely cosmetic."

If he assumed I didn't ride my bike every day, that's his bad, I referred to her as "my baby."

I don't particularly want to buy a chain tool. I just picked up the bike a few days ago, I tip mechanics 20%+. I'm considering if they diagnose it to be the chain to ask them to replace it with free labor as I just picked up my bike less than a week ago and was advised not to replace the chain.

You run a bike shop. Is that reasonable? He shouldn't have told me it was "purely cosmetic" but I also should take responsibility that I didn't follow my instincts and own knowledge about bikes. My chain is everything in the old ass shimano derailleur.

Just look up the Bike Oven and or The Bike Kitchen. They have all the tools you may need and they will work with you to teach you how to fix your bike.

When I ride in the rain i usually give the bike a through cleaning before applying more lube. I have found that the water seems to carry a bunch of really small dirt particles and so not only do you have to worry about rust, but also there is a bunch of dirt really deep. The bike would not shift gears cleanly and just didnt work right. I clean the chain and the derailleurs and then apply lube to the chain as well as the pivot points on the derailleur. I usually use Park Tools Citrus cleaner and for lube either ATB (absolutely the best) or Triflo also works well. I have tried the wax based lubes but the chain and gears run so smooth with ATB Good luck with your bike and Ride On...

The idiots replaced my (perfectly fine) brake cables and didn't replace my obviously fried derailleur cables. I'm so pissed I'm disputing the charge.

I've NEVER had a single problem with Orange 20 Bikes in LA or The Bicycle Stand in Long Beach. I consider this a lesson learned to not let anyone but The Bicycle Stand touch my bike. I'm too far from 020. <3

Thank you for your lovely and helpful replies. I went in ready to blame the rain and pay for whatever labor necessary, but the man insisted "something was wrong with my bike" and it wasn't the rain....

Yeah, it was you idiots not fixing my bike correctly. >.<

LOL Russells in Downey...I know that place. I went there once to get a bottom bracket installed on my girls masi. It is a SRAM sprocket and it tightems down on the non drive side and they had never seen anything like it. I had to go online and pdf them the diagram of how the SRAM bb goes together. I thought Russells was more of a mountain bike shop, some bmx and a very limited amount of road bikes and most of the road bikes were commuter style. But I approached them in a friendly way, helped them understand how it worked and they were cool with me. But yeah, I am not a mechanic by far and in this case I knew a bit more than them but they understood quickly the diagram and their work was fine so far. It has been a year since they installed the bb.

I work in Downey lemme know if you need me to talk to the guys at Russells and see if we can persuade them to help you out and do a good job for you. Good luck. Ride on...

Your chain is worn if you measure 12 links and it's longer than a foot or just wiggle it from side to side, if it moves a lot, it's worn. However sight unseen, I can't know for sure.

Thank you, but Wells Fargo should handle it. When I worked in ecommerce retail you barely had time to work on chargebacks and they only have 10 days so I think I'll get my money back.
I tried going back there and Travis was looking for every reason but his mistake(s) to blame. He must have come up with 3+ different "reasons" my bike wasn't running...it was all bad.

My bike is my babygirl it's really disheartening having her not well taken care of. They fucked up my brakes. I don't think they've ever worked on a vintage road bike before?

The Bicycle Stand in Long Beach is the go-to expert on restoring vintage bikes, and they always get mine running like new when my derailleur gives out every couple months from my banging and running around. Not to mention the prices are great.
I'm not going through this again - I'll just make the trip there and back. I should be getting a car soon.

It's really ridiculous they expect me to diagnose the issue on my bike myself....nah that's why I pay $$$ at a bike shop. I want it to work. If I wanted to diagnose my own issues, I'd rather do the labor myself.

Now that I see the work on my brakes is all bad I feel a lot better about disputing the parts and labor for my brake cables and housing - since my brakes were working better BEFORE I went there. I'm about that integrity life I didn't dispute the entire charge including my new u-lock, just exactly what I paid in parts and labor and still lose out on $10 tip to the dude who fucked up my brakes.
