MTB RIDES?
Thread started by MtBKRIS3 at 08.6.08 - 1:00 pm

I KNOW THIS IS A LATE NIGHT THING, BUT THERE ARENT TOO MANY OFF ROAD RIDES. THERE ARE ALOT OF PALCES AROUND THE SOUTH BAY TO GO RIDING. THERES A PARK IN PV, THERES ALOT MORE PLACES TO RIDE WHEN YOU HAVE SUSPENSION.

IF ANYONE ELSE IS WITH ME ON THIS. HIT ME UP

I've been thinking of having an off/on road race up here in the dessert for some time,(when I get back from nevada,it might happen, maybe).
There's a lot of fun dirt road and jackrabbit homesteader Trails out here. A lot of fun for suspension bikes, and I've rode most of them at night, all you need is a half decent head light( even those LED flash lights they sell at liqueur stores are good enough)

How come every off-road/mtb ride has to be balls to the wall, insanoflex 4000, full suspension ass bruisers?

Why can't we have a Midnight Ridazz ride that is more like a trail ride. Get us off the streets, into some natural surroundings, hit up a lake or swimming hole etc. A ride where a mountain bike with no suspension can travel easily, and even a road bike with skilled operator could venture as well. Think dirt trails and lite gravel; avoiding ruts, roots, boulders and lobsters.

I'd be down.

I dunno,I mean yeah full suspension makes hard terrain easier,But I have yet to hit a trial, hill or path that I could not do on my regular mtb( I don't even have front suspension),It's not like having rear suspension helps with your gearing or pedaling, just helps you not eat shit when you bump over a rock at 25 mph.

I had a chance to try a full suspension Santa Cruz bike up on some gnarly trails in Santa Cruz a few weeks ago, and it was awesome. I first tried riding the trails on my no suspension Park Pre, and I got killed. I couldn't pedal, descend, ascend or turn near as well as on the Santa Cruz. So I totally appreciate the effects of full suspensions, don't get me wrong.

I just want to see a ride that ventures onto some moderate trails, at a moderate to relaxed pace without neccesitating an entirely new bike. It'll be fun, I swear.

Mountaineerzz Yo

We do once-a-month rides on the dirt.
No suspension required..
But it ain't at an easy pace.

We work hard and reap the reward.
Isn't that what biking is all about?

Yeah.... I've spoken to two wheels and others and from what they say... the ride is tough. I can't climb super fast so a nice easy pace uphill climb would be really cool. The only taste I've had would be Sullivan Canyon and that's during my early ridazz days. That thing kicked my ass.

I like what Eric Hair was talking about and getting some ridazz together for a nice climb up somewhere. I liked riding the trails. Totally felt like you weren't anywhere near the city. I haven't ridden my MTB for the longest. It's at home.... alone. It needs dirt.

I do a night ride with a group of riders most Wednesday nights out here on the West side. If you're a good rider, everything is doable on a hardtail, even rigid fork, but that's frankly not going to be as comfortable or safe as using suspension. Some of the downhills are gnarly in the Santa Monicas. The pace is quick. And you can't mess around with shitty lights, you've gotta have a decent night-riding light. Everyone has HIDs in our group, often two, which sounds like overkill, until you start riding regularly and realize the difference in how much safer it is.

Anyone not put off yet, feel free to email me and I'll tell you more. It's not the kind of ride I'd post.

Too add to all the hot-air I've been spurting, I still want to see about taking a ride into some of those ghost-towns in Death Valley.

Yeah, the four-wheeled, off-road bitches have already seen and done it, but a chill, yet steady climb into a long-abandoned, glory-hole will make my day.

Isn't that what biking is all about?

It all depends. I found I enjoy moderate cross country rides and enjoy the scenery and the area. When I'm bombing down a trail, my focus is on the trail and I miss out on being in the back country and enjoying nature. I broke my wrist bombing down a trail, it was fun hitting river crossings with a full suspension bike, that is until I must have hit a rock in the stream and flew off my bike. So I'm not sure what the reward is, unless you call wearing a cast for three months a reward for hard work.

If you want to do less technical rides, I found that MR wasn't the place to look for it. There are other groups in town who believe that biking isn't just about working hard and reaping the reward. Biking can be a reward in itself.

H'mm.
I'll have to say the fast-stuff I'm capable of doing, but would rather not.
This "Badger Dong" ride I'm still working on will be somewhat up the "slow/enjoyable" alley.
I'm just trying to put a route together that will get us up to the "Bridge-to-Nowhere".

Last I researched it, that thing's literally out in the middle of nothing!!

@Eric Hair
we are going to do a mountian bike only ride that is through trails and ends at a nice camping spot where we usu build a camp fire (date to be decided) but the reason i point this out to you is ...we are slow...not all crazy balls to the wall or anything...oh and we will do this at night in the Crest above azuza

@mk4524

sorry you broke your arm, but that's not what I'm talking about.
"working hard" is part of the whole human-powered-vehicle thing
and the "reward" is called F.U.N. at whatever level is Safe-4-You.
mountaineerzz is NOT about pushing anyone to do what's unsafe..
and I think our safety-record proves it..
in fact the worst get-off has been mine..
and I still rode home from the hills in good spirits.
if you wanna take a slow ride on a fire road.. go for it, but
please don't make my ride sound like some dangerous event..
that is sure to end in disaster.

Raquel, that sounds awesome and right up my alley.

There are many, many places in Angeles National Forest where you can ride also. They also have some nice swimming holes out there. The only drawback is the long, winding, high-speed road that takes you up and into Angeles.

I would be willing to drive and take bikes for a weekend thing.
Maybe this would be a good alternative for those of use who aren't going to Burning Man.

Has anyone ridin these areas?
TheDoad, can you shed some light on the subject?

@digiblesoul - I liked riding the trails. Totally felt like you weren't anywhere near the city

I love mountain biking but like eric, I'm not up to "balls to the wall" riding. Like Al, I've ridden trails but myself, I'm getting tired of getting beat up by fast riding and am looking to take it a little more easy.

I anyone is interested in checking out the Santa Monica Mountains around Ventura County, I have a list of moderate rides. Sycamore Canyon is one of my favorites, it's close to the ocean, there are some tough climbs but you don't have to take them and there are also a lot of good single tracks that aren't that technical. I've seen people do it with solid forks although front shocks really help keep your wheels on the ground.

A few weeks ago, I was resting under a shade tree. When I left, my riding partner noticed a rattle snake who was only a few feet from where I had been. He was on the fat side so we figured he had already eaten. A little later, he ran over a snake on the trail. Ain't nature wonderful?
