you can choose to participate in digital society or not.
if you do participate through social forums, email, or shopping.
you information is being gathered. period.
what qualifies google as "evil" or even "intrusive"?
they are doing what they to to make information more accessible for everyone and to make money while doing it.
Has google ever been found to improperly use the information that they gather?
AT&T, Verizon, and sprint all gave up data illegally to the the department of justice.
Did google participate?

I don't care if they use my net presence to target ads to me. If it keeps their service free I am not forced to click any ads.
If you don't like it I suggest you:
-Get ride of credit cards
-Move to a remote area in the mountains
-use carrier pigeons to post to MR

The china question is pretty simple.
Google can operate in china under their rules or not at all.
They have to weigh the benefits/ liabilities of being in an authoritarian country or not.
Just like 99% of all the people on MR have a bike or biking accessory that was at least in part made in china. those companies had to decide to follow china's rules if they want to do business in china.
As far as the NSA thing. Either there is or isn't evidence that google helped the NSA.
How would google wiggle out of admitting they helped the NSA when all the other major telecoms had to come clean?
I've been aware of how much info Google's robots track since gmail was in beta.
I've assumed that by extension that they do the same kind of anonymous information gathering with every branch of their digital empire.
I consider it to be the price of using their amazing tools.
(now they know that i love to look at satellite views of the circular farms of the)
We are all getting fairly used to this now. Facebook and most other services do the same thing ... if not as well.
But I understand that this may be news to some, so the information sharing is appreciated even if it is accompanied by some hyperbolic assessments.
A funny side note about google's info bots.
On
http://bicyclefixation.com/ they use google ad sense to help cover their server fees and operating expenses. I saw an SUV ad there once. Apparently they had some negative mentions of SUVs and the google bots thought it would be great to try and sell SUVs to the bike nerds the read bicycle fixation. lolz for the dumbotz. i am sure they are getting smarter every day.
