A gang of the little fuckers (I recognized two of them) just rolled by the smokehouse about 6 deep...stopped and took a long look at my steelman (to see if anything wasn't locked up properly, i presume). I went outside and asked them what they were up to in a friendly way, they all just scattered.

How reliable is this info? Talk to the cops first and see what they are going to do would be my guess. I wouldn't give them an address unless their going to do something. Then at least when you take matters in your own hands, you can say you gave the cops a chance to take care of this.

Hate to say it, but Information of a location isn't going to be enough for the cops to do anything. From the cops' point of view, you could be making it up for all they know.
You got to give them enough information and evidence to form the basis for a warrant (to search a house, apartment, garage, shack, car, etc.) or at least probable cause to arrest the guy if they spot him on the street somewhere.
There's no hard and fast rule on how much information/evidence is enough for a warrant or probable cause (especially in this type of situation where the cops didn't see a crime being committed.)....the more evidence you have the better your chances.
Catching them in the act would be the best.
If you have a picture of the thief with a wheel in his hand riding down the street...that might be a good start.
if you have a bunch of different pictures with him carrying a bunch of different wheels on separate occasions...well, now you're getting somewhere. They could justifiably stop the guy and start asking questions, if the cops happen to see him around town riding around carrying a wheel.
If you have a picture of him carrying wheels or bikes into a particular location like a house or a garage...that would be even better!

Talking to the parents could work if the kids are young enough to still actually be afraid of their parents. Otherwise, high school level punk/thugs just don't care. If you know the kids parents are also Latino, you might need someone to speak to them in Spanish.
Here's a passive aggressive idea, you could post pics or flyers around the parents home to publicly embarrass and shame them into cooperating so that the cops don't have to get involved.
At the very least, you're putting them on notice that they may be aiding and abetting a criminal or may even be an accessory to the crime after the fact by allowing these kids to store stuff under their own roof.
If you're gonna talk to parents, try to convince them that you're not after their kid....you're actually after the scumbag who is corrupting their poor little child. You know parents will defend their kids even if they are being accused of a crime.

I'm sorry but if I found out my bike was stolen and I knew the dude who did it, I would totally hurt them. I'm not a violent person, I hate fighting. I've just put too much time and money into my bike and when things go wrong (hopefully they don't) I want to make these kids UNDERSTAND (that doesn't mean physically hurting them) that what they are doing is wrong.

Well, I'm new to this forum but not new to getting my bikes / part jacked and I'm fucking tired of it.
The police will NOT do shit for you or your stolen bike.
In two separate cases they weren't the LEAST bit helpful in getting my bike back.
I've had 6 different bikes stolen / mutilated during the past 3-4 years, most recently my sadlle/carbon stem stolen right outside of Gold Room, while the security guard was still there, me drinking inside...
Shit is ridiculous, and (it's baad in the hollywood area too).
There's NO EXCUSE for stealing people's private property.
Anyone who defends bike thieves a single bit is a fucking moron.
They no what the're doing is wrong, they should have to deal with the circumstances.
(You know, in certain parts of the world you get your fucking hands chopped off for stealing, no less...)
My idea is roughly this:
1. Form a BIKE THIEF ELIMINATOR CREW
2. Set up bait bikes overnight in key locations
3. Hide away, take turns observing the bike from a distance
4. If / when the thief comes and tries to take it
5. Attack, apprehend them, put them in citizens' arrest or at least roughen them up and take their picture (and potentially turn them over to the police)
6. Best would be to get handcuffs and handcuff the motheruckers up to a fence in a public area - public humiliation is the greatest deterrent.
Something like this would take time and effort, but I've been entertaining this idea for a while, and would carry it out with
NO REMORSE and NO MERCY.

3. Attack theif
4. Duct tape theif to bike rack with sign around neck that says "THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TRY TO STEAL A BICYCLE"
5. Leave or video tape from a distance
6. Call Police

Hey every1,
my name is July... and I'm an alco... oh wait. So again, I'm July and I don't want anyone mistaking me for someone else with what I'm about to say.
We have circled this conversation time and time again and yet nothing has been done, save for wasting keystrokes.
What I don't understand is how some of you tape/record entire rides, snap a thousand pictures (I'm not making this up, ya'll know who you are, lol) but yet no one can follow some of these kids from a distance and maybe just record them? I know there's a lot of riders with a lot of free time on their hands. Instead of riding just for the sake of riding, why don't you ride down to the location and just record or keep an eye out. I don't condone violence... against anyone, but specially kids.
With so many capable minds it's shocking to see that no one has come up with something yet. Bikes will continue to get stolen and we will continue to cry about it on the forums. Let's do something.
And if you don't want to do anything, then get the people that do involved - the cops. If you have information share it. But do something with it. Otherwise, what's the point?
I have yet to get my bike stolen... but I take a ton of precautions and believe it or not, I still only have cable lock (it's about to change once I get paid) but yet nothing's happened. I am never too far from my bike and when I get fucked up, as a lot of us do on a lot of the rides, I make sure I either move my bike within arms distance or have someone who I trust who I know is sober keep an eye on it along with their own.
The only good excuse should be what happened to that poor girl and her friend with those cats jumping out of the car. And even then, there are precautions. Mace/pepper spray being one of them.
But come on... don't turn on each other. You guys all ride together whether you know the face behind the online name or not... formulate and come together.

this is a good point. next time i gots nothing to do i might just do that. itll be fun like cat and mouse.. you can make a ride of it, go to a spot lay some bikes togeather with one lock and watch with some beers a distance away and pull some quick flicks..
cmon itll be funnn.

If you're going to go through all that trouble, you might as well make it entertaining. I would like to suggest a 12 volt battery that's hooked up to give a bad ass shock to the person that grabs it. Make sure the cameras are rolling too!
