So I just started listening to music while i ride, and i noticed that listening to SLAYER actually got me to work 5 minutes faster! what's your favorite music to listen to on the road?
I don't agree with tyler. And not mostly because he has long hair, BUT that earphones in my ears block the wind which accounts for most of the noise i hear. Keeping the music low allows me to hear both at once! (more than without earphones)
saying you can hear just as well with earbuds is total BS.... I get really annoyed on rides when I try to ask someone "where's the next turn?" or just say "hey, what's up?" and they have no idea I said anything... until I scream the question again, and they see me, take out their earbud and go "what?!"
I dunno about you guys, but I depend on the sound of car engines coming up behind me, etc...
...and I'm not just agreeing with Tyler because he has luxurious long hair and is super hot.
OH! But as for the wind in ears problem... I find that if I'm wearing a helmet, there is never a problem with wind in my ears... it's like it directs the wind past me. Whenever I forget to wear a helmet the fist thing that I notice is the deafening wind.
i used to ride with sony noise cancelling earbuds when i rode the bike path in ojai. the wind rushing by your ear noise was much more louder than without them.
fuck people on group rides who wear headphones. unless its eddieboy - he can listen to techno this way and not bother anyone else.
ill wait until there is a cure for diabetes before i have kids. i dont want to pass this down to anyone. fuck kids.
when i was on swim team, the coach told us to play our favorite songs in our heads to pass the time or get us pumped up in races. this of course was before the advent of underwater speakers or waterproof ipods.
Actually back in my glory days, I had the Adolescents song Kids of the Black Hole stuck in my head on a Bicykillers and I flew at the front of the pack that whole night.
omg totally, Canada. I was riding to long beach with my friend who was wearing headphones and I had to fucking SCREAM at him to get him to hear me. finally he did the hang off the ears thing but yeah that is SO annoying.
He tells me to listen to music while riding, but I said you know, I don't need electronics draping off of me everywhere I go. Riding is a time to be human, I can be in my own head and think about things and experience the elements.
It's true. They're killing human interaction. I'm totally guilty of falling for it too... like on a subway. People work on their laptops, put on their iPods or play with their phones, etc. Pretty much anything to pass any waiting time that might otherwise result in casual discussion or something.
But on rides... c'mon! It's your chance to take in the city through all of your senses... and on group rides it's a chance be social! And even if the wind is strong in your ears... that just means you're riding hard. It's a good feeling :)
^^^ yeah exactly... that's why I do it too. The crazies in L.A. are way more in-your-face than what I'm used to. Like that creepy drunk guy that leaned over and kissed my neck.
Only other reason I don my earbuds up here is due to the fact that the traffic noise up here is more annoying due to 80% of the vehicles up here having some sort of modified exhaust.
Some people like them, but they become a nuisance and I'd much rather hear my own music as opposed to some shitwad telling everyone in a five-mile radius that they have a FlowMaster!!!
And its funny, there's this Seinfeld episode where they condemn the "cell phone walk and talk" as completely rude.
Now that is totally normal...there's even special little things so you don't have to walk and hold the phone up to your head anymore!
and texting, ugh. I hate when you are hanging out with a person and they sit there and text the whole time. I have a friend who did that until I called her on it. shits rude.

I find cell phone ear pieces THE WORST. Cell phone talking is rude... but now with those stupid ear pieces, I always think that people are talking to me. Like in my work elevator, someone will say "so how was your weekend?" or something, and I'm like "it was pretty goo..." and then they cut me off and say something like "oh really??? he's in town?" and then I realize they weren't talking to me.... they give me a silly smile, and I feel all embarrassed, when they're the one who should be embarrassed for wearing one of those douchebag things.
eventually, children will be born with bluetooth technology imbedded in their domes and won't need to have real conversations. imagine not laughing out loud, or actually talking to someone, just thinking it. its the future, and this is just the beginning. no gods no masters.

i do agree that people with headphones on during group rides piss me off- it's dangerous
but i do like riding and listening if i'm alone. i take one out if traffic is bad or i keep it low like richie. i just can't motivate myself without it. i know it's not the smartest thing to do, but i need my music.
and yes i use my blackberry in public to avoid a lot of pointless small talk. mainly because i don't know what the fuck to say so i just look down.
people with bluetooth headsets on 24/7 piss me off too. they look like fucktards and it's definitely hard to tell who they're talking to in the elevator - i have to go up 2 elevators full of agents everyday. ugh.
