In an attempt to have better and more aware riders, I posted up a script of what I've been saying to new riders that I meet on Taco Tuesday and Crank Mob. It is a quick run down of the basics of whats to be expected of them on a ride. It should be about 2 minute conversation max. I approach people I think are new riders, and say to them the following:
" Hi, My name is _____ nice to meet you, is this your first time on your ride? (doesn't matter what they answer, this is to let them know why you are even talking to them)
Just to let you know about a couple things for this ride, we've been asking people to watch their speed, be aware of their surroundings, ride in straight lines and such. If you hear someone shout something like, "left turn, or slowing" shout it as well to pass the message along. Also, if you see a pothole, or a crash, make sure to call it out as well. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know, if you're here with a group, if I Could please ask you to share the message.
HAve a great ride and be safe. "
Move on to the next person, or group. I do this for 2 reasons, 1: great way to meet people 2: that rider might be next to me at some point in the ride, and I wouldn't want that person doing anything stupid, so I take a proactive approach. I think last c-mob I covered about 50-75 people.
"have you heard about safe mob? there are no rules at crank mob, but some people got hurt last time, so we all do a few things we do to stay safe. if you see a crash, or an asshole driver, or a pothole, or the cops, just yell out 'hole!' or '5-0' or 'asshole, right!'
"and do you know what 'hold your line' means? it means ride in a straight line, cause that's when most accidents happen. so if you see anything like that, or if you see someone swerving, dont be afraid to yell, 'hold your line' cause that's part of the fun."
