If you take the view that time is linear then you are probably pretty comfortable with the metaphor of time being a long straight road which you walk down, in one direction, looking backwards as you go since the future is shrouded in fog.
Another way to look at it is that time is a tree. A tree of possibilities. You are climbing the tree, and where you are at any given point is the present. As you climb and select branches, the branches below you which you did not climb are falling off. They are the inaccessible branches of discarded possibilities. The tree is always growing more branches above you.
A third way to look at time is as a river. You are standing on a bridge over the river, looking at the past receding from you, while the future sneaks up behind you.

My predictions:
The future will be much like the present, with a few new pluses and minuses.
Armageddon / The Mayan Cataclysm / Peak Oil / Peak Food / Global Warming / whatever will remain sufficiently in the distant future that you'll still need a day job and will have to continue paying rent and bills, although speculators and temporary events will cause temporary price jumps that will induce panic in the gullible.
Housing in L.A. will get cheaper until 2012 (especially in 2010/2011 when the Option/Alt-A ARMs reset), as the financial crisis / the California budget / white flight cause the educated middle class to head for other states with a more !@#$?genous population, better schools, and lower taxes. Around 2012-2013, people will realize "Holy Shit! Real estate has gotten cheap in CA!", and prices will begin to stabilize and increase again.
Hybrid / Electric cars will continue to be popular, and get cheaper, which will make the car vs. bike debate even more contentious, as bikes will still be the environmentally responsible option, but the convenience/affordability/relative environmental friendliness of hybrid/electric cars will make 4 wheeled transport pretty appealing, so cycling advocates will have to make appeals based on the fun and fitness aspects of bicycles, rather than being self-righteous and annoying. This new approach will, ironically, achieve far more in terms of productivity and goals reached.
Large group rides will continue to grow, and will be more fun than ever, although a small minority will still continue to litter, steal, and generally fail, causing negative posts on the forum the next day.
People who leave their bikes unlocked or locked up with cable locks will still post sad messages after they get their bikes stolen, and eddieboyinla will recommend that they buy a real lock.
Obama will be a precisely average president, which will disappoint those who hoped he'd cure AIDS and cancer and the economy in his first 100 days in office.
Roadblock will get MR The Book finished, and go on a book tour by bicycle, spreading the joy of nocturnal cycling nationwide.

hahaha. so last night... i'm trying to get inspired, get better at painting so i'm like hmm i'm going to paint Obama. i have 3 different size canvases and i think.. which one does Obama deserve? what do i predict his term will be like? average. he got the medium sized canvas, for how mediocre i predict his term will be.
