Can anyone point to diagrams on how this stem is made and designed to work? It's a Shimano stem.

Trippy.

My best guess is that it either came out of the mill as a mistake, or perhaps you place tightening-collars on opposite ends of the holes and tighten the bars that way.

Mr. Gopez,

This stem has no Allen-Bolt holes to tighten any mounting bracket for a handlebar!!!

At least none that are visible.

A slight chance that this is one of those prototype, "fine, joint-line" jobs with those smaller, Allen-screws.

I doubt that though.

i dont want to sift through thousands of pages on the lafixed bike porn thread, but the stem hardware is all at the top of the part that goes into the steer tube. theres one allen bolt that secures it to the bike and another one at an angle that points towards the front where the handlebars would be that holds them in place. its like an integrated seatpost collar, but for a stem.

this particular bike is russian, and according to the website these pictures came from, "Handlebar and internal bar-clamp stem made in Ukraine by Kharkov Bicycle Works."

Actually the stem at the top is a Dura Ace stem. You can find an example of one on ebay, item # 370121729682

It states in the ad, "one key release".

i have a blue early 80's univega decked out in all dura ace and the stem is the same. my drops are connected to the non adjustable stem and the bike was sold that way. they're angled perfectly for riding.

heres the full shimano dura ace ax gruppo it came from.

Introduced in 1981, AX parts were perhaps one of the most audacious efforts to redesign modern racing "gear." The aerodynamic-to-the-max effort made the AX truly ahead of its time! Sadly (?) the world was not ready for this futuristric group and after two years of production, the plug was pulled!

There is a cap at the top rear of the stem. You remove the cap with a 6mm allen wrench (not supplied). With the cap removed you can adjust the handlebar clamp by inserting the allen wrench through the hole horizontally. You'll need an allen wrench that's about six inches long. To tighten or loosen the stem in the steerer, just insert the wrench vertically to adjust the expander wedge at the bottom. It's a wonderful piece of engineering that eliminates the usual exposed bolt for the handlebar clamp.
