has anyone done anything like this?
Apparently, I'm being posted out in Barstow at that outlet mall until another spot opens up closer to home/a better trucking job is found.
The route follows Nat'l Trails HWY and is extremely rural for the most part.
So, aside from wind and other weather shit, I'm pondering whether or not I'll need to pack heat along this route.

Also, is this insane to do on a mountain bike?
I'm starting to guess a roadbike may be a near-future purchase.
And I've also got a car, but fear taking it out of guilt.

i do 25 miles roundtrip commute on my fixed gear and it's okay. i can probably do twice that but not sure about 3x.

It never hurts to carry a gun. They can be heavy, it could be extra weight. You might want to be careful not to do anything that will jeopardizes your possible future career in Law enforcement. The police don't look kindly on anyone carry a gun accept them. I would carry some extra tubes, tires and water. There is a better chance of needing that over a weapon.

here is my commute.
56.3 miles and 2801 ft of elevation a day, round trip.
282 miles and 14,010 ft of elevation a week--when I ride every day of the work week.

Roundtrip. It's fairly hilly, too. And his headwind coming home from Barstow will be an absolute bitch 90% of the time. I've had my cars sandblasted on his route several times.

Yeah, it's 40 miles to and from, so the distance is all the more harier with the extra shit I might have to deal with in between.
Rednecks, windblasts that end up pushing you backward, and the general nothingness that exists in between.

The way I see it, I'll probably have to put up with it anywhere from 2 weeks, to two months.
By then, I'll either be at a security post closer to home, or have finally gotten into a trucking gig that's ideal to my preferences.

Thought I'd recycle a thread, as usual....

So, I'm vaguely thinking about going to school in Riverside, which is about 63 miles from my house. That would be 126 miles roundtrip. Bicy? Car? Train? Bus? Is this crazy? Is the school even that good? Probably not. Like I said, just a vague idea.

Sometimes cars are good.

Sure, there's a lot to be said for cycling, but there's something to be said for having some free time in the day that's not spent working / commuting / sleeping.

An 80 mile commute, if done by bike, is at least 4-5 hours a day assuming you can keep an average speed of 16-20mph. (The average speed on the Tour De France is 25mph, and those are the best cyclists in the world racing on closed courses, so it's doubtful you'll do that much better). Add on 8 hours of work and an hour of lunch break, and 8 hours of sleep, and you don't have much time left for anything else.

Bkes are GREAT for short commutes, but the longer you have to travel, the more attractive a car becomes.

But if you've got the spare time, go for it!

Don't carry a gun though, as it's far more likely to get you in trouble than to protect you. Pepper spray and common sense is the better option.

the metrolink will put you right by UCR. UCR is a good school, but it certainly gets hot and smoggy. Also, the metrolink schedule is somewhat limited in trains traveling to and from Riverside. I'd check out a schedule...

Marcus Brad and I rode out to Riverside on the first leg of the Funderstorm tour. It was pretty hot that day...not a walk in the park.

I would think metrolink...if you decide to go there.
Traffic is terrible on the 91, 60, 10, 210 during rush hour, but it is somewhat less horrible traveling west to east in the morning and east to west in the evening. All in all, driving will be really expensive.

You could always go out there and live in a dorm...and hang out with the Mighty Cycledelics. That is a really fun, exciting crew of bike people. The music scene is pretty fun there. re: saturation fest..pegasissy, abe vigoda etc. ehh..

Aren't all UC-system schools the same anyway?

Riverside County isn't all that bad though.

The sheriff's department seems to be easier to get on with than San Berdo.

There's plenty of abandoned, Mine-age out towards the East.

Did a little research on that Mission Inn, and there's seems to be these rumors of tunnels going up into the surrounding mountains.

Overall though, school could be a good reason to go out there.
My little sister though, Wand(umb)a, wants to go to UCI and work towards a design degree of some type.

My little sister is a hipster and denies every second of it!!
