I think Kellogg's made a grave tactical error here.
Phelps is an athlete. Phelps is the face of Frosted Flakes cereal, yay. Phelps, AFTER WINNING EIGHT FUCKING GOLD MEDALS, which is more gold medals than any of us ever will, smokes a little pot. It's illegal — I get that. But come on. If anyone's earned some party-time, it's Phelps.
And war veterans. But whatever.
Kellogg's should've kept the Phelps endorsement. They would've gotten the brand loyalty of pot smokers everywhere. And they eat a lot of cereal!

hes someone impressionable little kids can look up to. if their heroes smoke weed, then the little kids are gonna smoke weed. and weed still has negative connotations. yeah, its stupid that hes losing sponsorships because of it, but in the end, i think its more admirable of him to come out and be like "yeah, i got high." rather than lying about it like everyone else in his shoes probably would have done.
goofus gets stoned and lies about it to everyone. gallant gets high and comes forward about his mistakes.

sadly,
it takes comedians to really nail the truth in a news story.
Since the beginning of time Olympians have been considered to be God Like among athletes.
It really destroys the anti-drug narrative to have one of the the greatest athletes in the world caught using weed ... which we all know is harmless in comparison to most of it legal to consume.
That's why people are so shrill about it.
Hopefully this will add up to one more instance of paranoid over-reaction to the use of marijuana.
And make the rest of us say really?!
really?!

rbi, I agree that he handled the situation well. And I'm by no means advocating pot use. I don't smoke it and don't imagine myself starting smoking it any time soon. (I have other vices.) I was snarkily implying that, as people who often partake of late-night cereal binges, maybe pulling a cereal sponsorship over pot use was a dumb move.
But sure, yes, if we're going to have a serious discussion about this, then the short-term gains would not be worth the long-term loss of respect from, say, parents. Who also buy a lot of cereal.
Love,
Katie
