Happy Holidays!
The LA City Council has the Cyclists' Bill of Rights on the agenda for tomorrow's Council meeting.
Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 @ 10am - City Hall. I'll be riding from the Red Line @ Santa Monica & Vermont @ 9am.
The item will go on the consent agenda unless someone protests but we'll be there to speak in favor or at least to howl at the moon when they take the big step and recognize cyclists and the rights of cyclists.
By this time tomorrow, you'll be able to flash your Cyclists' Bill of Rights spoke card and receive diplomatic immunity in communities throughout the Southland!

It's official, it has been endorsed by the city council. It's a small symbolic step but a necessary one in the acknowledgment that cyclists matter. Now we have the leverage to say, well you supported this document, but where are the goods. It's just talk now, but talk precedes action, and there is no hope for action if we don't get politicians talking about us first.

Adopted is kind of stretching it. They "Affirmed and supported the efforts to promote improved conditions for cyclists," and ENCOURAGED APPRECIATION FOR THE BICYCLISTS BILL OF RIGHTS
The Bill of Rights will be reviewed by DOT, Planning, DPW, the Bike Advisory Committee and LAPD to report on what they can do to incorporate the principles in the Bill of Rights before it comes back for final approval.
Stephen and I had to clarify with Rosendahl's staff what actually happened, it was hard to follow.
The important thing is that the City Council is behind hte principles, even if they're still quibbling over the exact wording. Now we wait to see what, if any, changes the city will make as a result of this action.
Best moment had to be Michelle Mowery explaining that yes, many LAPD officers don't understand cyclists rights.

Yeah I jumped the gun based on LAist article which left out some of the details on Streetsblog post that came later. Oh LaBonge. Wait and see for the real deal I guess.
