Thread Box:
frequency in bike thefts
Thread started by stella at 05.15.10 - 11:58 am

there are so many people who having their bikes being stolen as of lates i hypothesize that from the frequency, that it is due to summer getting closer. i could be wrong but i could be right as well.

Get extra locks, get mace because whatever is sparking up bike thefts it doesn't seem like it's going away anytime soon.

Ride in groups with friends especially at night when heading home!!!!!!
I know driving defeats the purpose of riding bikes but if you have to drive home then do so!!!
And never leave your bike unattended!!!!

It's the Economic Collapse creating this increase and it will only get worse.
These bikes are not being stolen for summertime riding, wake up.

I didn't forget that there is recession going. i know that bikes are being sold to scrap yards and are being sold on craiglist for money. And there are people willing to steal from someone else because it's cool and getting popular and they are for these reasons. there are always reason the increase thefts within a given time period.

No it's just worthless pieces of shit who are to lazy to to get a job!

FYI Write down serial #. Most are located on the bottom of your bike by the crank. If it is stolen you'll need it for the police report.

Its like back in early '00-'05 when everyone young kid was into street racing, people were getting their Integras, Civics, and Neons jacked left and right. After the cops cracked down on the races and people got tired of getting their hard earned cars jacked or impounded the races just stopped. Well, now bikes, especially fixed gear bikes are the new thing to jack, except its a whole lot easier to take a bicycle than a car. Every time you get into what everyone else is getting into especially what young kids like that don't have the money, your going to get jacked. Everyone tells me why I don't ride a fixed gear instead of a road bike but this is one of the reasons because I know what they are thinking. I think the best thing to do when your outnumbered is to pull into a spot like a grocery store that has CCTV cameras posted outside their shop so the cops can at least get some real time footage of the jackers.

Definitely be careful even on rides. Lock up your bike (with a U-lock), even if you're going in the store for 5 minutes unless you have some friends that you absolutely trust to look over your bike.

On a side note, I saw a kid riding last night with the Birfday ride drop a pair of bolt cutters early into the ride. He might have fled after picking them up, but just be aware that you're potentially riding with thieves.

Give me a fucking break.

Just ride it like you stole it and you ought to be fine. The later is gets the faster you ride.

One thing to be worried about is the recent firing of hundreds of people at Homeboy Industries. That equals a lot of desperate recent arrivals from the prison industrial system back into society with no place to re-integrate with the rest of us. That equals crime on another scale.

Google BEAR SPRAY

People have mentioned it on here before. I think I'm ready to make an order. It looks like it will fit in a water bottle cage.

Ride in groups when you are leaving the rides. We should be organizing rides back to the start or rides back to your area at the end of rides. I also would encourage ride leaders to end their rides were they started.

Man this Bear Spray is no joke ... If you do get off a solid spray and you hit someone ..... they are pretty much done. I have had the awesome pleasure of getting hit with cheap pepper spray because someone thought it was funny and that was the worst 45 minutes ever. So I can only imagine that something for a bear would be even worse ...

Just make sure you buy a container that's LESS than 2.5oz of contents.

Containers larger than that are illegal under CA law, and that's a hassle that's best avoided, given the not infrequent contact between rides and the various PDs.

Big 5 Sporting Goods sells SABRE, which is a combination of tear gas, pepper spray, and UV dye, in a decent sized sub-2.5oz. container, for $12.99 or so, and that's probably your best option.

The end of the housing bubble and the exposure of the bubble economy that attended it may or may not signal some imminent apocalyptic "collapse," but let's be real for a millisecond here: I highly, highly doubt that many of the people currently stealing bikes in LA were gainfully employed a year and a half ago. Indeed, I doubt that a lot of them had pubic hair a year and a half ago.

Perspective: it's not just good for painters!

I just can't resist yelling ECONOMIC COLLAPSE !

But your absolutely right to some degree.

But with no prospect of a job of career this leads to a criminal mindset.

Another factor is the generations of criminal gangsters who fill this city,
condoning this lifestyle teaching there youth at a young age criminal behavior.

Bear spray IS legal, it's the size of the container you have to worry about, per California Penal Code 12403.7(e):

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate?WAISdocID=134977757+1+0+0&WAISaction=retrieve

12403.7. Notwithstanding any other law, any person may purchase,
possess, or use tear gas and tear gas weapons for the projection or
release of tear gas if the tear gas and tear gas weapons are used
solely for self-defense purposes, subject to the following
requirements:
(a) No person convicted of a felony or any crime involving an
assault under the laws of the United States, the State of California,
or any other state, government, or country or convicted of misuse of
tear gas under subdivision (g) shall purchase, possess, or use tear
gas or tear gas weapons.
(b) No person who is addicted to any narcotic drug shall purchase,
possess, or use tear gas or tear gas weapons.
(c) No person shall sell or furnish any tear gas or tear gas
weapon to a minor.
(d) No person who is a minor shall purchase, possess, or use tear
gas or tear gas weapons.
(e) (1) No person shall purchase, possess, or use any tear gas
weapon that expels a projectile, or that expels the tear gas by any
method other than an aerosol spray, or that contains more than 2.5
ounces net weight of aerosol spray.
(2) Every tear gas container and tear gas weapon that may be
lawfully purchased, possessed, and used pursuant to this section
shall have a label that states: "WARNING: The use of this substance
or device for any purpose other than self-defense is a crime under
the law. The contents are dangerous--use with care."
(3) After January 1, 1984, every tear gas container and tear gas
weapon that may be lawfully purchased, possessed, and used pursuant
to this section shall have a label that discloses the date on which
the useful life of the tear gas weapon expires.
(4) Every tear gas container and tear gas weapon that may be
lawfully purchased pursuant to this section shall be accompanied at
the time of purchase by printed instructions for use.
(f) Effective March 1, 1994, every tear gas container and tear gas
weapon that may be lawfully purchased, possessed, and used pursuant
to this section shall be accompanied by an insert including
directions for use, first aid information, safety and storage
information, and explanation of the legal ramifications of improper
use of the tear gas container or tear gas product.
(g) Any person who uses tear gas or tear gas weapons except in
self-defense is guilty of a public offense and is punishable by
imprisonment in a state prison for 16 months, or two or three years
or in a county jail not to exceed one year or by a fine not to exceed
one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both the fine and imprisonment,
except that, if the use is against a peace officer, as defined in
Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2,
engaged in the performance of his or her official duties and the
person committing the offense knows or reasonably should know that
the victim is a peace officer, the offense is punishable by
imprisonment in a state prison for 16 months or two or three years or
by a fine of one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both the fine and
imprisonment.

It seems like they're talking about tear gas exclusively... Pepper spray isn't the same as tear gas though because supposedly they use chili extracts as opposed to synthetic chemicals... I'm not sure what bear spray has...But maybe there's a way to get around that 2.5 oz law?

BTW, It seems kinda unreasonable to sell bear spray in 2.5 oz sprays considering their intended use is for a 500+ wild animal.

Guys, I'm on your side, here, believe me. I want you all to be as capable of defending yourselves as possible, but I also would prefer to see you not to have any undue legal hassles with the authorities.

A big container of bear spray might be preferable for hiking in the back country, where bears are plentiful and law enforcement is scarce, but given the more or less inevitable meetings between ridazz and law enforcement, having a large illegal "weapon" in view would seem to be one of the hassles that is easily avoided, so I'd stick to the 2.5oz or smaller containers.

As defined by CA law, tear gas is considered pretty much the same as pepper spray.

California Penal Code 12401. "Tear gas" as used in this chapter shall apply to and
include all liquid, gaseous or solid substances intended to produce
temporary physical discomfort or permanent injury through being
vaporized or otherwise dispersed in the air, but does not apply to,
and shall not include, any substance registered as an economic poison
as provided in Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 12751) of Division
7 of the Agricultural Code provided that such substance is not
intended to be used to produce discomfort or injury to human beings.

You can read more / do more research here - http://leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html , the relevant sections for tear gas / pepper spray are California Penal Code 12401-12404

In other news, you can also buy pepper spray "grenades" in 2oz sizes.
http://www.dutygearstore.com/foxlabsmk3oclockongrenade-p-4173.html

While these would seem to be legal to carry, I'm not sure whether a court would find them suitable for "self-defense" purposes, so use at your discretion.

Stay safe everyone.
