Well if you've never ridden track, you are supposed to go to the beginner class which takes place the last Saturday of the month.
Head over to http://www.fixedgearfever.com/ they have ton of FAQ's etc. Beginners forum, as well as an Encino local board.

considering ive never ridden on a trakc before, what's that equivalent to? how fast?

It's pretty tough the last 15 laps get damn fast, when I was going I would usually drop out with about 3 to go. By the last lap there were usually only about 4 extremely quick guys.

Most people who are not retarded (these are NOT my words, btw) can show up on Monday and be ok. Stefan Mayer pretty much runs the night, and will kick your ass if you're looking for it.
100 lap paceline for warmup and then we work on other stuff like madison training, match sprints and general bike handling stuff.
It's fast. Most people who don't already have a solid core fitness level (as well as above average bike handling skills on the road) will have a hard time for a while.
