I was riding home from work yesterday, on some side street east of Motor. I was approaching an intersection with an alley and two SUV's parked side by side blocking the entire street. As I was deciding whether to turn or try to go between the cars, the SUV facing me decided to pull out into the street in front of me.
I panicked and grabbed my front brake, flipping over my handlebars. In spite of the fact that i wasnt wearing my helmet, i was mostly fine. i was horrified to see that my brand new handlebars were bent in different directions, though.
as i was riding to school later, i noticed that the bars were actually more comfortable than they were before. i went to the bikerowave and using a piece of rebar, straightened out the left side to match the right.
lesson learned? if someone pulls out in front of you and you flip over your bars, you might want to thank them.
theyre old steel. and yes, i'm going to really start wearing my helmet when riding alone, as we all should. i normally dont use my helmet when i ride to work because i have such a short commute, but no trip is too short to get hurt.
the practice has come to use already, I had to make a few quick stops and I put my weight at the back of the bike almost instinctively. The bike didn't feel like it was about to flip or leaning forwards.

only wearing a helmet while riding alone. because not wearing one at sayyyy, C.R.A.N.K. MOB, is so safe - think about it.
wear a helmet all the time. seriously. i got my accident over 6 months ago - i still can't lay my head back unless i have a pillow under it. it's still bruised. and if i ever hit that area again - i will die.
AND when i got in my accident - i was wearing my helmet - if i hadn't been, i wouldn't be typing this right now.

i'd like to be able to ride without a helmet, but between the douchebags on the major streets, the morons on the residentials, and the retarded dog-walkers standing five abreast on the bike paths there's no where safe in this whole damn city.
hey, there's an idea! start ticketing the retards walking on the culver blvd bike path, which is right next to a pedestrian walkway. the only visible trace that the sidewalk is used are all the skid marks from people wiping out trying to avoid people on the bike path.
the city would be able to retain all those jobs and have enough left over for more bike lanes and more opportunities to write tickets!
but i digress. i suppose i'd be thinking a little straighter if i had been wearing my helmet yesterday.
