Thread Box:
Bike Show idea!?
Thread started by Thegirlinglass at 07.5.09 - 11:53 am

Hey there! I have a question for all of you ridazz..

As some of you may know i work for Fuel TV.. it's an action sports network focusing on snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, wake boarding, moto-x, bmx, and fmx.

It's that time of year at work where we're allowed to submit ideas/proposals for new shows/series.
Even though i work in the music department, I am still allowed to participate.

I had an idea for a show focusing on the bicycle culture/scene all over the US, having each episode (or two) focus on a certain city. Have my producers follow a ride around (maybe even use footage of All City!?), how we use riding as not only a mechanism for transportation but also a way to have fun, see/experience the city/town, interact with people old and young all over the place. We could focus on the fun rides, the wolfpack rides, or whatever. We could also focus too on how we have to combat with drivers, poor road conditions, lack of bike lanes, (maybe) the police force giving us a hard time.. . Of course all this would change depending on which city was the episodes focal point.

Use the idea of "Ride a Bike, you'd be home by now" or "Put the fun between your legs." sayings.

I just want to know if you guys like the idea, or have any constructive criticism. It's just something i recently thought about and of course wanted everyone (or majority) of approvals/ideas before I submit the idea.

Let me know! Thanks :)

Documentary on the dangerous underground World of Hardcourt Bicycle Polo. Blood, Beer, Drugs, Pride and Bikes. You could follow some of us around the globe at tournaments, as well as at local pickup games.

That would be awesome... I love your ideas!! Have them follow the Los Angelopes ride. Get the freak bikes in it!! Like Rossangeles' video with all the tallbikes and fuzz's bike. Then... follow the commuters... party rides... all city toy stuff... then maybe get the peeps from 4SBB in it.

You're on the right track! That would be sooo awesome if FTV would pick it up!!

DUUEEEE EEEETT!

I would watch that.

I hope LA gets the spotlight though, there is SOOO much to document here.

polo, hustle rides, party rides, crank mob, theme rides, weekly/monthly/bi-monthly rides..... just so much stuff going on.

that would be cool but they would probably be more likely to do a special on fixed gear freestyling or something like that.

they could, though if i am the one directing/spearheading the show/series I can pretty much take it any direction. Though focusing on fixed gear freestyling might be a good place to start or to at least start as the hook to the pitch since it does closely resemble bmx.. but it would be nice to also have the show expanded to that and beyond.

This could really work out to be something special. Yeah showing the bike culture in the different cities would be awesome. Not just bunch of fixie ridazz out on the street, but the whole scene.

If you ever are looking for something new to do a doc on, take a look at the bike trials scene. Trials is big in Europe, but the US does have a few ridazz. Ryan Leech is Canadian, but I'm calling him the best US has to offer!

BTW, the only trials action you have on your site is a pretty good video. It's motorcycle trials, but it still a cool video. http://www.fuel.tv/Travis199/videos/view/3503

isnt fuel tv the same channel that exploited surfing and skateboarding?

are they just trying to attract another urban counter culture crowd so we can be fed advertisements through the tube?

you guys all bitched about nike, how is this any different?

surfing and skateboarding were already exploited before fuel tv came along.

already exploited, being exploited, whatever.

i mean, folks are complaining about rides having sketchy people stealing shit and wrecking rides,

yeah just wait and see after "fixed gear culture" hits mainstream media.

idk, this just seems like a bad idea.

I think its a good idea. I also think that fixed gears are going to be popular no matter what so making a show about them is just kind of eh. But bicycle culture in different cities i like that because every city is so different but we all share a love for riding, bike building, and the community

idk

have u seen the shows on fuel tv?

and ALL that advertising?

it just seems a bit hypocritical for people to talk so much trash about similar things and then be way down to be apart of some extreme action sports show on something that is not that far from MTV.

this and with everyone complaining about how crazy these big rides are getting, imagine how much nuttier these are going to get once it starts attracting mainstream public folks.

i could be wrong but it seems kinda sketchy.

well acutally most people who watch fuel tv anyway are actions/ outdoor sports enthusiasts. people who actually surf, skate, snowboard.. whatever.. because if you don't it might be pretty boring.. PLUS when you watch FUEL you usually have to either have direct TV or buy the sports package (shitty but thats how it works right now).. sooo we're not going to be hitting the "mainstream".. just get into the households of those who already hold an interest in being active or bikes.

and as for advertising goes.. that's what you NEED to stay afloat on the airways, these days.. and you can bash that all you want, but thats what happens in the TV world.. heck.. even newspapers, magazines, whatever depend on it, plus we don't have many sponsors/ advertisers as compared to other networks.

Plus i think it would be interesting to focus on the bike culture all over the US to see how each city has its own unique outlook on the bicycling culture.

i actually grew up skateboarding and have worked in the industry and most if not all that actually do skate have scoffed a bit at fuel and the like.

i will admit though, its definitely not as bad as all the xgames business.

YES YES YES!

now not to hurt feelings, but I'd skip the fixed gear tricks and tall bikes. it's just too cerebral an art for the brosauce and bong-hit crowd that Fuel TV caters to.

- choppercobras is awesome but has media blackout by order of the Rev.
- jousting is fun and lends well to jumpcut montages...
- how about the misunderstood lives of corkers?

Bike Polo is a Must

The fact of the matter is this scene is getting bigger, and none of us can control it.If anyone is is going to do something like this I would feel more comfortable knowing it was someone who rode with us,but really in the end someone is going to do this at some point and we all know it thats what we are afraid of in the first place.I always thought the true intent of this whole thing was to bring bike culture to light anyway,so if this can help get more people on two wheels,I for one am all for it.Just make sure you get my good side...............

well this is why i wanted to make sure that i got the majority of everyone's approval before i submitted the idea.. because if a lot of people were not comfortable with it, then i won't do it.. it was just an idea i had floating around and wanted to share it.

definitely get some bike jousting shots. here's my idea:

introduction
party rides: taco tuesday, tns
fast rides: wolfpack hustle
freak rides: los angeleopes

and then conclude with the bike jousting by saying "they all come together for CRANK MOB."

How about a show like "The Wire".

The struggle for street usage from the viewpoints of a bike-commuter tired of endless shit, a civilian SUV-operator hell-bent on making a cyclists lives a living Hell, and an LAPD watch-commander who's torn between appeasing his superiors and bringing a peace of mind to the animosity-fueled world of street-commuters.

All stories being partially narrated from a future-perspective of a long-retired trucker living in Eastern Washington state.

Yeah, the extreme-sports variant is pretty cool, but reality TV seems to be getting played out to the point of "yeah, whatever".

Time for some good, scripted drama in the realms of a Showtime Original Series!!!
Or something along those lines.

Meh. Why do we think we're so "underground" and "exclusive"? Bikes and urban cycling and fixed-gear bikes have been around for over 100 years. It's mainstream, and it SHOULD be mainstream.

To Thegirlinglass, the Fuel TV person: Here's a chance to make something entertaining and positive without marginalizing or playing on old stereotypes. Whatever you choose to cover, focus on how FUN and relatively safe cycling is and make the environmental and physical benefits implicit without beating people over the head with it.
