Thread Box:
RIDE-Arc this Friday
Thread started by mr rollers at 04.2.08 - 6:55 pm

Starting at the Federal Building in Westwood. I'm thinking of putting together a "roll to" from the Bicycle District. Any interest?

reply

Glo rider's services are on Friday. I was planning on attending services then probably use the Gold Line and the Red Line to Hollywood and Highland. From there, just bike it to the start. It takes about a half hour to do this riding part.

Link to info of services

BTW, the doc he was involved with is tomorrow. You'll find that info on the calendar too

We, on the Westside, refer to the Federal Building as the Blurry Building.

When driving on the 405 at night the lights in the building make it look fuzzy or blurry.

FYI everyone:

The starting location may change - both out of research, logistics, and opportunity. If it does, it will be announced very quickly on the RIDE-Arc mailing list, on the website, and here...

If it does, the start place will be about 5-6 miles to the East of the Federal Building.

The change may be made out of a combination of the route we're taking, proximity to locations for the dialogue, etc:.

And...yeah, ummm... just a small warning: sound systems definitely not recommended on this one. And brakes: you will need brakes.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was originally thinking gather about 8pm; roll by 8:15-8:30, but let's stay tuned and see what changes, then make the final decision.

mr rollers
04.3.08 - 8:28 am

reply

Okay, thanks for your patience with this -

We decided:

a) The starting location will stay the same.

b) We won't be doing a particularly difficult portion of the ride, not even as an 'option' - because there will be a high likelihood that people may get really injured on it, especially coming down. :) 1000ft elevation gain in 2.7 miles.

My fiendish side is o.k. with this and letting it go...for now. Maybe next time.

Ok then, let's make it 8pm at the Bicycle District ("Don't Call it Hel-Mel" tm) and we'll roll by 8:30 sharp. This is the notice; I'm not going to post a "ride to a ride".

I'll most likely have to miss GloRider's service. Thanks to those that can represent.

Hoe do y'all like this for a route:

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1758454

I realize it has a slightly sketchy section, but if we have enough people and we stick together, we'll be fine. And it's direct, just about 10 miles.

mr rollers
04.4.08 - 9:13 am

reply

Sketchy section = Beverly Hills.

You really have to be on the lookout for those Bentley and RR drivers. They are chatting away on their diamond encrusted cell phones and not paying attention as they make their way to a gala or dinner somewhere.

stevo4

mr rollers: take Melrose to Santa Monica, but when you get there make a left and get on "Civic Center drive". it is a small street that runs parallel to santa monica blvd. when you get to Beverly, it dead-ends, you need to hop a curb but it starts back up again. Finally it turns left and leads you to South Santa Monica, a commercial street that parallels the large Santa Monica Blvd through Beverly Hills. It then reconnects with Santa Monica when you get to Century City and the bike path starts.

This is the most direct route and Civic Center and South Santa Monica are both fairly safe and in good condition.

I sent in my complaint yesterday and just received this (form looking) e-mail response:

" Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Operators are to use
good judgement while under revenue service especially around cyclists.
We entered your report into our database and forwarded a copy to the
division manager. They will identify the operator, interview them, and
take corrective action."

We'll see.

Steve,

Can you please tell us where this happened and the direction of travel?
Once received, we will enter your report into our database and notify management on the incident.

mk, were you with us when that happened? This was on the ride to the ride.

mr rollers

No but I thought I'd file anyway after you told me about it when you arrived. Volume of correspondence might count.

mk4524
04.7.08 - 11:55 am

reply

mk,

there were enough of us as first hand witnesses that saw it happen that, if those who saw it happen, it should be enough to get the point across.

It might dilute our message if somebody submits second hand information that is less than accurate.

I deliberately avoided posting details about what happened until the other witnesses had an opportunity to send in their own recollections of the incident.

Maybe I am naive, but I think honesty is the best way to go.

trickmilla
04.7.08 - 12:30 pm

reply

When working with my local congressional representative on issues, I could see that constitutent response volume counted. By extension, this being a public agency, I thought the same might be true here.

I didn't file as a witness nor as a participant but was merely pointing out negligence on the part of the driver as well as the unnecsaary exposure to liability by the driver. When I was told of the incident, those who told me about it said that if anyone complained to the MTA, it would merely get ignored. Short of being subpoenaed as a witness, I didn't think it would make a difference.

mk4524
04.7.08 - 12:43 pm

reply

Fair enough.

From my experience MTA only listens to first hand accounts of events.
When I sent an email complaining about the reported treatment of a rider the person on the other line wrote back thanking me for my concern but asked if I had any first hand experiences to relate.

But yeah .. as long as you are being honest it can't hurt to chime in.

It is difficult with MTA. They insulate themselves from criticism on specific incidents by claiming (perhaps fairly) that they can not talk about any specific disciplinary action taken with a specific employee due to "employee privacy protections".

Still,
I think there needs to be more transparency as to what in general the MTA is doing to educate drivers about how to safely interact with bicycles. I would say that about 95% of the drivers I interact with on the road are good, courteous drivers. Unfortunately the other 5% can be lethally stupid.

Sorry for the thread disruption, but I just wanted to say the actual RideArc ride was awesome! The route was way cool, and again, Alex taking us to corners of LA unexplored was very special. The exclu$ive Beverly Hood area was a nice highlight for me! As was zipping around UCLA. Turn out of about 200 ridazz didn't hurt either. Your hard work is much appreciated Alex.

Oh and nice work on the spoke card too!

My thanks to Alex for arranging yet another interesting Ride-Arc ride.

Thanks also to Josh for picking up the helmet I left behind at the start of the ride.

Latest hypothesis on my very squeaky bike drive train is it needs new jockey wheels in its SRAM X7 RD, a fault to which this particular derailleur is prone if the internets are right. So a whole new RD is on order. Got some good fix-it idea shout-outs during the ride, my favorite being "Too many spoke cards!"
