Big Rally at LA City Hall for cyclist rights. 12 noon Monday July 14, 2008
Lets make a big show for this one. The Media that you love to hate and watch will be there in large numbers.. After the rally we will storm the city hall to demand that the City Council recognize the
Cyclist Bill of Right.
I know PC, we are asking Rich people permission to ride our bikes. No it is more then that, read the
Cyclist Bill of Right.. We are making a show to demonstrate how many of us there are. The bigger we are, the more serious they have to take us. A showing of big numbers says we mean business. not necessarily business, but bikeness. SRSY
business BIKENESS!
These are the policy makers for the City of LA. Yes we can ride our bikes. We can also force them to have there transportation managers and designers, plan and make the roads safer and inviting for us growing number of cyclist. We want to make sure that they direct our city police to respect us, learn our rights to the road and respect our constitutional rights. We want the police to enforce laws that will protect us while we ride on the road.
THIS IS A CELEBRATION. IT IS ALSO OUR TIME TO DEMAND OUR RIGHTS AS CYCLIST.
PLEASE JOIN US.

in the LA times too.
Monday’s protest fell on Bastille Day, the day in 1789 that the French stormed the Bastille prison and launched the French Revolution. But the event at City Hall looked more like LA-palooza, with bicyclists, perennial gadfly Zuma Dogg in a sombrero and public school parent activist Sandra Tsing Loh dressed somewhat like the Statue of Liberty as she criticized the bureaucracy of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Says Enci:
Great Day! Big Bike Dan led the charge with the music trailer; Stephen, Enci, Alex running, Matt, Patricia, Ingrid, Sexy Jr., Sexy Sr., Josef and offspring, some new guy, Ed, Mark, DJ Chickenleather, Moy, David, Sean, Rachel and a couple other cyclists attended.
We spoke to a crowd of around 200 and Joseph urged them to redefine the definition of transportation so that it includes all modes of travel including cyclists, not just motor vehicles. Alex spoke of the Freeway ride and about how sad it is that its safer to ride a bicycle on the freeway then it is on the street. Stephen introduced the Cyclists' Bill of Rights while Sexy Jr. and Sr. unfurled the 50' banner, and I spoke of the importance of putting people first and reminding them that cyclists are people just like motorists and pedestrians and we got to get along.
City Councilman Dennis Zine, City Controller Laura Chick, and several Neighborhood Council board members amongst others signed the Cyclists Bill of Rights. Woohoo!

over all. I thought the thing was pretty stupid. A mish-mosh of different people with different issues directed at city official. Officals who where not around. There was plenty of media and lots of newspaper reporters and photographers (wasn't there a lot AT?).
The reason I was trying to encourage everybody to come out is to show how serious and organized we are. If we could get 20%- 33% (a fifth to a third) of people who come out to rides to come these events. Show up and pack the room (or in this case the yard), it will show how serious we are. That many people attending these events will leave an impression that we can't be ignored. If we could even have 10% of those that come to the 2nd Friday rides, come out to these events, we as cyclist will be taken more seriously. We would see the change that we want to make cycling more safe and friendly to all of us.
PLEASE COME OUT TO THESE EVENTS. We can change things around LA for our benefit. The more people that show up, the quicker it will happen.
