L.A. Bike Count!
Thread started by herbie at 09.9.09 - 6:57 pm

EVERY CYCLIST COUNTS!
The more Ridazz volunteer, the more bikes we can count, the bigger and badder our presence in this city...

Email me at herbiehuff@gmail.com to get a .pdf flyer you can bring on rides or around town. And visit the website to volunteer!

--------------------

L.A. Bike Count

"every cyclist counts"

Be Part of LA's First Bike Count! Sign up as an LA Bike Count Volunteer at www.labikecount.org

On September 22, 23, and 26, 2009 we'll be counting cyclists at 50 intersections around the city. We need your help to make the count happen! Working together we can increase the bike-ability and livability of Los Angeles. For more info and to sign up, visit: www.labikecount.org

What is a bike count?
Bike counts are a crucial city planning tool; they show where and how our streets are being used. A bike count depends on volunteers to help count the number of cyclists and pedestrians at key intersections throughout our city. The counts help track year-to-year changes in the number of cyclists and pedestrians as policy and urban infrastructure change. We hope to use the data collected from LA's First Bike Count to help LA's city planners and engineers take a closer look at an ecologically and socially viable form of transportation that deserves support.

or if someone could arrange for lance armstrong to tweet on those days, we could count every roadie in LA...

and apparently san pedro and san diego too...

seriously, though, we still need to staff all the intersections so we need all the volunteers we can get!

I signed up a few days ago. I picked some hipster part of town and the DTLA area.

It's an important step to take if we want some bicycle infrastructure.

We just updated the volunteer sign-up sheet to show that we really need more volunteers in the valley and South LA. We really want to get a complete picture of the whole city, so please sign up for those areas if you can!

http://tiny.cc/labikecount

I did the Glendale bike Count yesterday in Montrose and saw about 28 cyclists, mostly roadies. No females, sadly.

Let's make sure we can catch all the Ridazz in LA that we can!
Also, there's gonna be a huge kick-off event on Tuesday morning with Council Member Rosendahl, who is the Chair of the Transportation Committee. More details soon.

Some highlights of yesterdays count were watching these two fixie hipsters going for a ride. One of them roll to his buddies pad and pulls his fixie out of his SUV. Then they both go rolling down the sidewalk. About 30 minutes later they back, rolling on the sidewalk. Real hardcore cause they like ta keep it real!

Saw some other hipster fixie ridazz rolling on the sidewalk too on my 2 1/2 hour watch. Guess it's the new thang?

What was most depressing is for a nice area it was at, 8th and La Brea, counted only 3 chick ridazz out of 72 bikes. Exactly half were sidewalk ridazz. After watching traffic for all those hours, I was a bit sketched about tackling the mean streets myself!

Today it's 7th and Fig!

i believe they may still need people to count on these intersections. These locations need people for Saturday.

Help out where you can. i did Manchester/ Hoover. You noticed that most riders in the area rode on the side walk. like three people i think had helmets and rode the street.

i feel Manchester could use a bike lane.my 2cents

I counted yesterday at 8th & La Brea. 141 peds and 58 bikes between 7-9:30 a.m.

My favorite ped was this guy all up in the camouflage with his arm in a sling:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/wildbell/3948905254/

My favorite biker wore flip flops and smoked a cigarette that he no doubt pitched into the street where it will eventually find its way to the bay and choke a gull, the bastard:
