Thread Box:
Verizon Building: ANTI-BICYCLE
Thread started by Roadblock at 09.14.07 - 3:49 pm

This just in.... got an email about the new proposed policy for Tenants and workers at the Verizon Building....

"I work at the Verizon building on 7th and Flower in Downtown LA (700 S. Flower St.). When I started working here, I asked about riding my bike to work, and my company's HR, building management and the management for the parking structure all told me the same thing, "There are bike racks outside." Not that I don't trust my fellow Angelenos, but I thought it was unreasonable to leave my bike in the same stop, outside a mall, day after day.

Anyway, after a couple of years and requests from other people, the building management has tried to present something. I don't want to appear unreasonable, but check out the bullshit offer bellow:

BUILDING MEMO

RE: BIKE RACKS

Please be advised that it has come to Management’s attention that a few Tenants have requested bringing their bicycles into their suites via the freight elevator. This would put a strain on the freight usage during business hours. The other alternative is to set up bike racks inside a gated area along the property.

There would be a monthly charge of $25 for the use of these bike racks, along with a one time key deposit fee of $5. These bike racks would be available Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7pm. Any bikes left overnight will be charged an extra fee of $10.

Please note that we can only do this if enough Tenants are willing to participate. If you are interested in bringing your bike to work, please contact the Building Office at 213-624-2891.

Thank you,

Jamison Services
Office of the Building"

Holy crap that is awful. That just shows that not only do they not care about bike commuters, they actively seek to leech off them like blood suckers. I feel pretty lucky, I just carry my bike into work as do quite a number of my co-workers.

call pretending you work there and that you want to complain yet remain anonymous for fear of retribution and register a complaint that the fee is absolutely ridiculous. is this wrong to do? lol!

Don't call the building manager. Call the media. Get this story out on the blogs and in the newspapers. Once the Verizon building management has been publicly portrayed as a bunch of grinches who are making it harder for people to use alternative transportation, they may very well decide that they didn't reeeeally need the twenty-five bucks all that badly.

The mainstream media doesn't, but never underestimate the blogs. The local blogs, is what I'm talking about. And I do believe that there are a few cyclists in the local blogosphere.

totally man, I was just kidding. I think the local medai might actually take it up especially cause it has to do with Downtown. all the money interests in downtown are DESPERATE for people to move there and feel comfortable there.

If to park a car costs $200/mo and you can fit 8 bikes in a parking spot, the $25/mo is not unreasonable except it should be paid by the employer who supposedly get all sorts of tax incentives for encouraging ridesharing.

The $10/night overnight fee is ridiculous.
What are they going to do with the space at night? Valet park bicyclists who go to the Standard at night?

The no bikes in the freight elevator is also ridiculous.

Jamison Services manages about 40 office buildings in Los Angeles. Most of them along Wilshire. It could make a nice ride to visit them all. Say next LA Critical Mass?

But first maybe our bike czar should have a chance to negotiate a compromise?

You can fit way more than eight bikes in a typical car parking spot. The real estate and maintenance costs are nowhere near as high, either (you don't have to provide special ramps, devote the ground floor to parking, worry about ventilation for the exhaust, etc.). Combine that with the tax breaks, PR value, and the warm fuzziness of facilitating sustainable, non-planetfucking transportation, and the $25 becomes very unreasonable indeed.
