Thread Box:
indie 103.1 is dead
Thread started by Joe Borfo at 01.15.09 - 1:51 pm

http://la.metblogs.com/2009/01/15/breaking-indie-1031-no-more/

radio sucks.

at least there's kxlu.

reply

Typical music listeners in the USA long ago turned into compartmentalized, sheepish, submissive slaves to the big music marketing and unfortunately Indy 103.1 couldn't turn that around to where people want to listen to a variety of genres and/or new unpayola'd artists.

103.1 (and KXLU when I could receive it) were the only reason I still have an FM radio. Fuck that, it's Internet only for me now.

"Indie Activist:

This is an important message for the Indie 103.1 Radio Audience -

Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game.

We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.

This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative - simply put, only the best music.

For those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 - which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.

We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world."

that IS lame, but at the same time soooo cool.

sticking to their guns instead of selling out. very admirable.

You do realize indie was owned by clear channel right?

It's a little more complex than that:

"The station began as a collaboration between Entravision and Clear Channel. Clear Channel primarily handled advertising on the station, but because the organization already owned the maximum number of stations in the Los Angeles market allowed by Federal Communications Commission regulations, the arrangement was terminated in March 2005."

That station was boring as hell most of the time. How many has-beens do you need to give air-time to? Really, I need to hear Radio Casbah for the 6th time today?

Jack FM may claim to be "Broadcasting from a dumpy little building in beautiful downtown Culver City", while actually being a nationwide CBS subsidiary (http://www.jack.fm/listen/), but at least their music's entertaining.

The hosts may have been has-beens, but many of them are huge music fans and played up and coming bands from all over the world. And no commercial station in So Cal currently plays a mix of electronica and rock and roll like Indy did.

And Jack? Recycled 80s shit for 90% of the time? No thanks.

I'm looking forward to the new generation of internet radios that use the latest mobile technology. Even satellite radio is limited in it's diversity.

It's even a little more complex than that.
I used to work at Groove Radio in the late nineties when it broadcast on that frequency. It is made up of two small towers in soso geographic locations. One in the lowish hills just east of Culver City(Ladera Heights?), the second is in Newport Beach. The signal does not reach into East LA or the valley well at all. Much less Inland Empire and Riverside. KROQ by comparison has a rather low power tower, but on top of Mt. Wilson. It reaches all over because it is so high and has clear shot to several areas. There is no real way for Indie to change this since any changes/increases in size or power would require going to the FCC and the heavy hitters like KROQ, KISS (if it's still called that) would fight hard to block it as it would affect their signals. Not to mention their financial interests. Their signals are grand fathered in, so they have little to worry about.

isn't it ironic that the genius power moves this industry makes to try to save itself are further burning it to the ground.

I guess I could listen to indy 103.1 online, but for now I'll stick to my playlists or let Pandora do the spinnin

I'll say.

After Sirius and XM merged, they had the nerve to ditch Boombox-39, and a few other channels to cut costs!!!

Although now, I've been enjoying the shit out of this Slacker.com radio.

I posted a thread about it awhile ago, but no one cared.

Outside of the hours of 8am-6pm Mon-Fri the DJs played what they wanted to with no restrictions from a program director. That is not corporate.

During the hours of 8am - 6pm Mon-Fri you could call them corporate, but, still, 103.1 played stuff during the weekdays that no other commercial station in LA would touch. The Stooges and Frank Sinatra in the same set?

Man you guys, everything is corporate. The only thing that ISN'T corporate is that piece of ass on santa monica and hollywood at 2am on a saturday. Even that ass can get corporate, though.

Radio sucks. Except for 88.1 when they aren't getting too much into the elevator scene, and AM 1260 used to be good but not anymore, and TV sucks. Soon enough the internet will suck. But that will take a long time. Everything sucks. Oh well. C'est la vie. My bike won't fail like the radio.

Oh man I remember Groove Radio way back when. That techno shit was fresh! They had club DJs come in a quest show after their shows and bringing the latest shit from Europe. They wound have the freshest sounds in the weee hours of the mornings. Even in the day times they played some of the sweetest shit around. I wish they would have given it more time to grow.

I never listened to the latest incarnation of 103. I was a KCRW listener when I was drving. Now it's pretty much internet tubes listening.

I wish everyone could have experienced radio before the corporate strangle hold started taken hold. In Sacramento there was KZAP (still the coolest radio digits I've eva seen!) and the DJs could play what ever they wanted. Seriously I didn't want to turn the radio off cause I thought I would miss something! KZAP weather dartboard is just a small hint at what these guys were up to.

I would be thrilled to listen to more corporate radio hosted by Steve Jones and Henry Rollins any day of the week.

The irony is that the on-air 103.1 is now playing some ghetto-ass, shite-quality classic-punk bootlegs and finally sounding like a real indie station and the internet version is blissfully commercial (and host) free.

Homie, I bet if we really really had the time to actually sit down and follow the money we would weed out the clear channel connection. Who is taking over the frequency now? This stuff especially in a market like LA is alllllllll owned by a few media companies but hidden a few levels so as to not appear as a monopoly.

The freeking offices were at office buildings on wilshire that clear channel companies also occupy. I'm willing to bet that the ownership is in the same legally defined as seperate "family."
