On Monday, May 11, Enci and I will be in Sacramento to testify in favor of Assemblyman Paul Krekorian's AB766 "Safe Streets" Bill which will require local public hearings to consider the safety of cyclists and pedestrians when establishing the speed limits in our communities.

We'd like your help!

AB766 is a small step in the right direction. We've been putting a lot of energy into the LADOT and into the City Council but the real opportunity for change is to go after State Law, the CVC and the DMV, all in Sacramento.

1) Join us in Sacramento and let's start advocating for real change by working with our State level leaders. We'd love to have you join us.

2) Write us a letter telling the State leadership who you are, where you live, your experiences on the streets and why you support AB766 which puts the power to establish speed limits in the local communities. SafeStreets@BikeWritersCollective.com

3) Join us this Thursday for a press conference at noon. We've scheduled a ride, we meet at the NoHo Red line Station @ 11am, we ride at 11:30 am, the press conference is at 12 noon.

Out of curiosity, what are (or are expected to be) the main arguments in opposition to this?

If objections arise, it will be from the car lobby and the development lobby that fear that slower streets are bad for business. Since the City Council and Mayor are backing this plan, I don't expect them to be in opposition. Villaraigosa wouldn't back something like this without permission.

I don't see how slower streets would negatively affect local businesses. In fact I imagine it'd be exactly the opposite.

Are you referring to impacts in shipping speed etc?

Also I understand that is not your position, just asking for clarification.

Do you think there will be opposition based on the possible confusion based on possibly encountering several different speed limits on a (say) 10 mile drive?

I think people think that slower speeds=more congestion=less business and less opportunities for building. I think that's wrong, but know that's how people's brains work.

Opposition based on the confusion of signs would be nonsensical as an argument. The City Council passed a limit increase for a section of Zelzah avenue that will have four speed changes in about two miles.
