GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY --> All City Toy Ride
Thread started by theroyalacademy at 12.9.10 - 1:40 am

If you're anything like me, you're psyched for the All City Toy Ride but were thinking that, ya know, with so many meet ups all around town it is just a little TOO convenient. I mean, there are TWO separate meeting points that are within a mile of my apartment. Where is the fun in that?

Well, we here at The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time feel your pain. And... WE'RE PROBLEM SOLVERS. And so we've decided to offer a solution to your problem: we're leading a ride to the ride starting at GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY. This ride will include: 1) hills; 2) bridges and tunnels; 3) significant off-roading.

So pack a toy in your sack and come take the long, winding route with us to the All City Toy Ride this Friday! (We leave the Observatory at 8pm sharp.)

Full ride info here.

I gotta get a cyclocross bike or something for these...

My Passage (cycling in general) hiatus will be over soon. It's deadline season at work. I won't be able to make it to the ACTR at all. :< Super sad.

I miss you guys! 3':

I do it on my road bike and don't have any problems.

Having good tires is important. Gatorskins: worth the investment.

I'm rather excited and frightened by all of this. The fact that your saying up front that it's going to be difficult is the part that's really chilling.

Nah I don’t mind… but I roll on 650Cs on a kid’s track bike because nothing else fits me (hence why I only have this bike for now and can’t find a god damn road bike that fits me and my budget. It would be nice to have my camping gear on panniers and not haul shit in a backpack to do some very light touring.) I thiiiink I get about 68-70 gear inches on the ratio I have on there now. I am in no way saying this is easy and jam up every hill like it is nobody’s business, but it’s the only bike I have and it has been serving me well. I did my first Dark Century on it and hope it will take me on a few more including Tour De Cure.

Btw I don’t care or know what any of it means since asking someone’s gear ratio when they are rolling on 700s doesn’t say anything to me unless they know their gear inches. I just know when I first got this bike I was riding it on 48x15 which I just looked up is about 78 gear inches ahah yeaaaaaaaa I didn’t keep it on that one for too long but it was when I just started to ride so I wonder how it will feel now (but probably not practical for the types of rides I go on and commuting). I don’t live in Angelino Heights anymore and I miss the hills because it kept me in shape more or less. Still it’s not the bike, it is the rider. anyway since you tend to ask, what have you found? I suppose it would depend on where they are riding...

Thanks so much, everybody, for coming out! Nice to see that there are other people in this world who enjoy inconvenience as much as I do. Also, thanks again John for the idea and Nathan for finding several of the cool passages we took.

Here is the route we ended up riding. Hills, tunnels, bridges, and off-roading as promised -- and even a little bit of highway as a surprise.

My favorite part was when we crossed paths with the Valley ride. They were heading out of the Valley, into the park and we were heading out of the park, into the Valley. Didn't they realize they were going the RIGHT direction?

(For those curious, this is the route I had planned to take. An extra mile and several extra hills. Next time.)

HAHA
it is doing very well...in my living room.

sadly the only thing i fixed up on that bike are the shifters. i bent back the derailleur as much as i could. it needs a few adjustments and replacements and you know, for me to learn how to ride it and get used to taking turns and shifting at the right time etc etc. it has bar end shifters now!

sadly i don't feel confident enough to bring this to Passage yet. I wonder how i will handle the rolling hills of San Pedro/Palos Verdes this bike vs the track bike. test ride coming soon ish. i know... i am lagging on it. this was my amazing find dream sleeping bag bike and yet it just stands there getting jealous of the adventures the other one goes on.
i haven't been sleeping much so i think i will incorporate riding around and going to OLA with this bike. yah! it does need a few new parts and tires though.

I give you a lot of shit about that bike but, honestly, I have two frames leaning against my wall with which I don't know if I'll ever do anything. So.... But, yeah, it does seem like having gears would make starting to ride again a little less difficult for you. And, as I've said before, I think you'll get used to it a lot quicker than you think.
