"There is really not much left. It's dying," says Matt Flores, co-owner of Wheels of Justice, a San Francisco courier service. Flores recently halved his full-time bikers -- "document clerks," as he calls them -- from eight to four. His top runner earns $50,000 a year, he says.

So, why is it that they're only limited to documents and such?
I'm quite sure most messengers are capable of delivering laptops, and other valuable electronics.
A 24-case pack of beer is heavier than a couple small, computers as well, so I'm guessing the only other reason vans deliver is due to security?
But then again, armored trucks get knocked over all the time.
