Thread Box:
wolfpack??? how fast?
Thread started by KiMS1 at 08.26.08 - 3:48 pm

i've been debating about joining but a bit intimidated (being dropped would be a bummer).

any estimate on how fast you guys go?

im fine at keeping up with bicykillers pace, tryin to figure out if it's a similar speed.

reply

average speed is 20mph

Roadblock

It's faster than Bicykillers.

Keyword: drafting.

c'mon now getting dropped is no big deal.... but really it's not about speed.... its about endurance. our smoke breaks are long enough for the slower riders to catch up.

sean! come to TNS tonight!

hmmm, im guessing i should just go and find out for myself. does greg webb go out to those rides?

oh and is the route usually posted up beforehand?

KiMS1

yeah gettin dropped is not that big of a deal but id rather try to avoid it since im from the valley and you guys ride all over LA proper. my geography ( aka shit, how am i gonna find my way back home ) is really the only issue.

whatever, ill see you guys on monday

KiMS1

Yeah, best to just try it out. I've only done it a few times. The first time I nearly died (didn't hydrate enough and got wicked legs cramps), but still made it all the way. Since then I haven't really had problems. If you stay with the pack, you're fine. Drafting helps A LOT. But Roadblock's right, they offer plenty of chances for catching up.

Not going to make it to TNS tonight. My derailleur is sorta f'ed up right now. Going to fix that this evening. But I'll make it up there again soon.

yeah, i heard you madmen blowing through reds. i dunno, maybe i dont have the balls for that, or maybe i do. I'll let riding with a group or playing catch up be the final deciding factor.

Yeah, I've probably seen more unsafe riding on TNS than I have on WP. (Nobody on WP is drunk.)

And, hell, the gnarliest wipeout I've ever witnessed on a ride was on the Mosey, so go figure....

i agree, our TNS rides have become some what notorious for fuckin' up.

i dunno,

getting arrested, running over frogs, brawl's at el indio, multiple faceplants, stolen bikes, broken bikes, broken hands, and worst of all, broken hearts (hahaha).

we're getting better though... knock on wood.

youll never know till you try!

my first wolfpack was on a huffy 10 speed single speed conversion on 27 inch tires. of course i got dropped, but it was fun.

when i had a bike with 700c tires id get dropped from the group, but like roadblock mentioned earlier, theres enough time to catch up to the next stop if you get dropped from the main pack.

wolfpack to me is about cooperative competition. i cant go as fast by myself, i never will be able to. what wolfpack gives me is a fast pack i can draft off, get dropped from, and try to catch up too. and chronic.

anyway. my two cents.

try it, its fun, dont worry about it.

i had to do the cahuenga pass the first time after getting dropped in mac. park ! i hadnt even heard of MR at that point.. i had just pullen out my roadbike out of my closet and heard about "the pack" through another interest of mine. hahaha.

dedication is all that matters. you'll feel better about you and your bike. you can do snotty ass posts on the internet after ! haha jk midnightpostazz....

Wolfpack is FAST, my first ride in LA and I was working to keep up, but as soon as I got my gear ratio up and tucked into the draft line it wasn't an issue. Just don't plan on stopping at every other liquor store to party, it's a serious pace. Everyone that runs shit is super cool, but they throw down when it comes to the ride, you might just miss out on a smoke or two

I just did wolfpack for the first time on monday. I was really intimidated by the prospect for a long time but was pretty surprised to find that I wasn't struggling all that much after all. I even hammered to the front and pulled the pack a few times, particularly during the last leg when I still had quite a bit of energy stored up after hanging in the draft for a lot of the night.

It's totally doable so long as you don't get dropped so be sure to bring a spare tube in case you have to make a quick change and meet at the next stop. Overall, it was one of the most positive and fun experiences I've had on a ride to date. The lack of excessive drinking was certainly a welcome change of pace... and the overall speed was also a welcome change of pace.

WOLFPACK is easy, all you need to do is stop working and bike all the time... Easyaspie.

Srsly, I was a total 200 lbs fattass and always in the leadpack "breakingAWAY" just come prepared, it's not too difficult.

RB... I've decided once again I'm not cool enough for a race that takes over 1.2 minutes so I'll be cheering you all on. That is why I can talk shit and be confident. I also know that CC has put a good amount of effort into the race and they are lookin pretty fast.

WPH is only hard if you ride it Merckx style (all out all the time [at the front]). There are only four or maybe five riders who do this. Anyone can do WPH. Anyone in pretty good shape can finish the ride. What is hard is to stay with the front for the whole ride. The one thing I want to point out is that when you are sitting behind guys pulling you at 28-29 mph it is pretty easy to sprint past them to the front at 32 mph. The thing is you will most likely not be able to hold this speed for more than a few seconds and it is really fucking annoying for us (the ones throwing down the really long hard/fast pulls) to have someone pass and then have to pass them five seconds later.

Anyway I would encourage everyone to come out at least one time to see if you like going fast.

I recommend just trying it.
I came out for my first ride almost as a joke... I tried my hardest and got dropped but I was hooked. I kept showing up and eventually I finished.

Even if you only make it to the first stop it's worth it.
Its a super fun ride.

Make sure your tires are inflated and that you had a good dinner earlier in the evening.

Wear a helmet.

If you learn how to draft, it makes all the difference in the world.

Stay focused, pay attention when the directions are being handed out and even if you get dropped you wont be lost.

Some of the best people I have met on WP have been those who also got dropped.

If you are really lucky. Coach will just off the back of the pack making a pace line with the other wolf droppings™ and will get you home faster and easier than if you were just flailing by yourself in the wind.

mountain bike cleats/pedals are best for urban riding, whether it be geared or fixed. they are easier to walk around in when off the bike. if youre riding brakeless and youre worried about clipping out during a skid, just be sure to tighten everything down and you should be good to go.
road cleats/pedals give you better power transfer but its awkward as fuck walking around in them.

i publicly endorse my sidi bullet2s and some shimano m540s.
