MOCA is offering free admission, Sunday Nov. 15 to Friday, Nov. 20.
Who wants/can go Friday afternoon, before TRWNN?

reply

Sounds cool, but how about Monday or Wednesday? Friday's I got to go to temple... Although it is a pretty nice time slot for those without *other* obligations.

Well, I picked Friday because I am planning on doing TRWNN, and I have to drive up for that, so Friday kills two birds with one gallon for me...so to speak.

Hey Les, I'll be taking the Blueline down there if you can work that in. I might end up staying in LA from 12 noon on. I may go to the Farmlab, then MOCA, then RWNN. I'll know by Thursday.

Then again, I was at MOCA recently and it might be the same show I saw. I'll have to check.

A few years ago I took a weekend class in DTLA through UCLA Extension. At lunch I would go to MOCA and sit in front of some of the big Rothko works - especially the dark ones - and let them wash over me, artistically and emotionally...
Then I would have an overpriced chicken salad and an even more overpriced Chardonnay at the MOCA Cafe (whatever it's actually called...) and then head back to class. It was the perfect combination of artistic inspiration and California (or LA) superficiality. Now that is a difficult balance to strike.

Yeah when I was there last they had a big room full of Rothkos. Was the best part of the visit.

+1

Absolutely. Rothko is hard to beat. Subtle and dramatic at the same time. I was just at SFMOMA, and their Rothko was my favorite there too - though the Richard Avedon photo collection was also amazing. There was a photo of William S. Burroughs, as an old man, that is amazing. And there is a three photo series of Igor Stravinsky that absolutely captures his eccentricity, genius and his straddling of modern and classical form (or I'm full of shit.) For me, the most inspiring and moving photo was Avedon's shot of Marilyn Monroe. Unlike all her cheesecake shots, there is a humanness and sadness in this photo that is heartbreaking.

MOCA is opening up a new show on Nov. 15th. It is their 30 year anniversary and should be a good show. It is at both the Grand and Little Tokyo locations.

I am going to check it out on Monday or Thurs

They are closed Tues and Wed if anyone is planning on those days.

oops, I was thinking it was open now. Both are closed till the 15th. Here's what it saids on their site...........

MOCA Grand Avenue and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA are currently closed for installation, reopening November 15.

MOCA admission is complimentary on November 15, 16, 19, and 20.

also there's a lecture in the auditorium on the 19th. Which makes the date I'd like to go a lock in.
http://www.moca.org/museum/event_calendar.php?m=11&day=19#19

Both buildings are free adm.
