Absolutely. Rothko is hard to beat. Subtle and dramatic at the same time. I was just at SFMOMA, and their Rothko was my favorite there too - though the Richard Avedon photo collection was also amazing. There was a photo of William S. Burroughs, as an old man, that is amazing. And there is a three photo series of Igor Stravinsky that absolutely captures his eccentricity, genius and his straddling of modern and classical form (or I'm full of shit.) For me, the most inspiring and moving photo was Avedon's shot of Marilyn Monroe. Unlike all her cheesecake shots, there is a humanness and sadness in this photo that is heartbreaking. |
