Half links can get ridiculous, and don't help much with the "magic ratio" problem you get on vertical dropouts. Plus, a chain tensioner allows a little more room to play around with the gear ratio without mucking about with the chain.

I've never played on a halflink, but I also get the feeling that they won't stand too much abuse. That's just my gut instinct though.

oh no, they cant take any abuse. thats why they put half link chains on bmx bikes.

p.s. half links are for wheel position, not chain tension k thx bai.

it's called a single-ator, for tensioning the chain on singlespeed conversions with non-horizontal dropouts. won't do fixed gear, though.

Looks like one of those S/S MTBs that used to get ripped on back in '99-'00 editions of MTB Magazine.

Ah, browsing through catalogs for expensive shit I couldn't afford back in grade school.

Actually, it's a chain tensioner - made for doing exactly what it does. Half links not qualified for this line of work, sorry Vinh. What you are looking at is a sexy-ass single speed polo pony.

I'm curious if you can use the limit screws on a derailer to match the bike's chainline, without going and putting in longer screws.

if you're asking can you do that on a singleator (or similar) device, no. proper chainline is achieved usually by using cassette spacers on the rear freehub.

if you were asking whether one can use a rear derailleur as a tensioner by adjusting the limit screws, yes, i did exactly that on a mtb ss conversion few years ago. can't say it would work on all derailleurs, i used a shimano deore xt m737 RD

yeah, i was asking about using a derailer as just a tensioner.

i forgot to mention, you still need to clamp a piece of cable from the barrel adjuster in the RD to keep it still.

That's exactly the setup David (Pistolero) runs on his KHS, so I'd say it works fine. Just a hunch.
