Neighborhood Councils bikes need representation
Thread started by Roadblock at 11.19.10 - 12:41 pm

If any of you are interested in getting more politically involved and pushing bike issues further I would suggest going to your Neighborhood Councils and seeing if there are open slots to get on.

Alex Thompson is on Mar Vista's neighborhood council, shotgun_mike is on Northridge South's NC and I'm looking to get a seat on my NC. there are 89 NC's out there and they have a (albeit small) budget of $45k each. The battle for LA and safer streets for us to ride on begins on a street by street, block by block level....

If we can get Ridazz on every NC imagine the momentum that can be built for bikes and safer streets.

DUET. Post your zip code and lets help each other push this bike thing for 2011...

100% awesome. If you ride, you know your neighborhood likely better than most and could bring and push for positive changes.

And don't forget that Stephen Box is running for City Council in CD4, and Glenn Baily (chair of BAC) is running for CD12. Ridazz Caucus?

What did Gandhi say--"Be the change that you want to see . . . "

How do you get one of these seats? Is it a democratic process? What kinds of qualifications are necessary / if I don't have any political knowledge or experience, can I still sit on a neighborhood council? How much time do you need to have available? It sounds like an awesome opportunity if I can make it fit with my work / school schedule.

And cyclist/planner Jeff Jacobberger is the Chair of the Mid-City West NC. Good guy.

Any others?

as far as I can tell, you dont need any experience but you have to have a stake in the area that the NC serves. You dont have to live there you might work there or own a buxiness sort of thing. Also I'm applying for an NC that has open positions. some neighborhoods are so uninvolved with their NC's that seats go unfilled.... I have no idea what to expect really but I'm willing to give it a shot. I'd like to get the people involved in cycling and I'm thinking that having a seat on the NC will give me a shot somehow of doing so. as an NC you also get access to the councilmans office. If we get more people on NCs then maybe we can form coalitions to influence the city council itself.

Don't worry so much about getting on a seat at first. Your council may have openings for specific categories, (i.e. youth, business, religious, parks, rec, transportation, public safety) or they may not have any open. Remember there has been people participating in these council since they have been forum and seat are already filled. It is important to attend the meetings and participate. The great things about these meetings is that they are open to all stakeholders thoughts and opinions. My experience with these councils has shown that just being at the meeting and speaking out, can sway a vote or direction of the council one way or another. The more you attend the better chance of you getting a seat becomes.
