Another vehicle/bike collision

Damn. God damn.

This just posted on the O.C. Register web site:

A captain from the Long Beach Fire Department was released on bail after he was accused of driving into a 48-year-old bicyclist and fleeing the scene, authorities said.
John Hines, 38, of Huntington Beach, was arrested and booked at the Seal Beach Police Department for felony hit and run as well as felony driving under the influence. He was released on $50,000 bail, police said.
Long Beach Fire Department, confirmed Hines' position within the department but would not disclose further details. It is unknown if Hines is on leave.
The incident was reported to Seal Beach police at 1:34 p.m. April 1 at Westminster Avenue east of Bolsa Chica Road.
Seal Beach police Sgt. Steve Bowles said it appeared that the bicyclist was traveling east on Westminster Avenue in the bike lane when Hines, in a Chevrolet truck, swerved into the bike lane and struck the rider while traveling at approximately 60 mph.
The cyclist was thrown and landed on the road's dirt shoulder.
Bowles said that Hines did not stop to check on the injured rider and continued driving to a residence in Huntington Beach.
Witnesses of the collision followed Hines to the Huntington Beach residence, where he was arrested.
The bicyclist was taken to a nearby hospital with major head trauma, and as of Thursday evening he was expected to be released soon.

The only good thing is the "witnesses" willingness to get involved and track the waste of skin back to his house.

Time to install kill-switches on the car that automatically cut the engine off and keep it off until the authorities arrive and determine the cause and other investigative procedures.

After all is said and done, the car can only be restarted after the proper codes are reentered, if the driver even still has possession of the vehicle.
And if it gets really nasty, the car locks the driver inside(not if vehicle is turned over) and keeps them there to prevent a "cut and run".
