Happy LOLidays!
Thread started by PC at 12.24.07 - 1:02 am

Since I doubt I'll see any of you in person until about this time next month (Xmas, then work, then I go and dick around in Europe for a few weeks), let me just sincerely wish all of you happy LOLidays and a safe and prosperous new year. You people are the cat's ass. Keep the rubber side down and the scruffy, ridiculously dressed side up. See you next year.

P.S. I shall still be available for hairsplitting arguments on the forums until the 28th. Let's make 'em good, guys; they'll have to last us for a while.
P.P.S. Super(Ni)Cole, you'll still be getting your LBC spoke card. Who else do I owe one to? Deesimple? Anyone else? Email me your snail mail addresses if you still want it. Nerds.

where you going in europe?

Visiting friends in Bern for the new year, and then spend the next two weeks or so in...somewhere. Someplace(s) trains can take me to. Someplace with easy bike rental, maybe. Paris? Amsterdam? Suggestions? Franz? Annie? Roadblock? Frannie? Ranz?

I am definitely considering Amsterdam. I've been there before, but it was a long time ago and no cycling was involved. Apart from tripping around the city center, do you know of any cool routes or paths in that area? Preferably one without too many hills? (<----hilarious joke)

Mr. C,

I would like to recommend Lisbon. The city is over 2000 years old. I spent two weeks there just walking around all day every day. The center of town has cobble stone streets with these old rickety street cars going though these streets so narrow, you can reach out and touch the building walls. Yeah you see, they always have the windows down on these streetcars, it's a far better way to keep in tune with the street life is my guess. You'll trip on all the mosaic designs they have on the wide sidewalks too. Everywhere you look there's geometric designs on the sidewalks that were done the old fashion way, one tiny stone at a time. I'm talking EVERY sidewalk in the city! There's also a street car that's similar to Angels Flight but has been working for ages. It takes you up the side of this hill gaining probably 1000 feet or so. The people are awesome too. Far more cosmopolitan than what you would find anywhere in Spain except for maybe Barcelona. The people love their city and like to keep things original and steep in history too.

Lisbon ranks up there with Berlin, Paris, Rome, and others as an international city in my book. Easily one of my top five favorite cities.

Shit! Fuck! I want to go to Lisbon! But I've been wanting to go to Barcelona also ever since I read Orwell's Homage to Catalonia, because of the vivid descriptions he give of Las Ramblas and the street fighting that went on there during the Spanish Civil War. And I want to ride those city bikes in goddamned Paris, too. I've only got about two weeks, apart from the time I'll spend visiting friends in Bern.

Does a person really have to spend a long time in Lisbon to appreciate it?

You could spend 4-5 days and see alot of Lisbon. I would spend it walking every where you can. Walk from sun up to sun down. You could never go wrong walking to the center of any city in Europe. This time of the year I would rather be in the south. If you go to Lisbon, try to spend a day or so in Porto if you can. Even if you're just passing through on the train it's worth going there.

Barcelona is an awesome city to visit too. Las Ramblas is nice but is really kicking in the summer. It is a bit over rated too. Just about every city has an area that is similar to this. An area that is conducive to walking or strolling. If you do go to Barcelona, try getting a night or two at the youth hostel that was a prison. Should be fairly easy this time of year. Also the Antonio Gaudi architecture and the Dali museum is a must see if you go to Barcelona.

Personally I would spend more time in Lisbon than Barcelona.

Fuck fucking yes, I want to see the Gaudi stuff in Barcelona. Yeah, I already suspected that Las Ramblas would not be anything hugely special as far as promenading/shopping districts in European cities, and I am sure that it will be full of chainstores and tourists. I just wanted to soak up the historical vibes and feel the ghosts and shit. Thank you, Big Silly, for the tips.

Pull yourself together! Big boys don't cry! Remember that.

When your in a foreign country, just say to yourself, "I'm a brave soldier, nothing can hurt me." Keep repeating that till the fear goes away.
