Staying Dry/Warm
Thread started by HANDBONE at 05.27.08 - 6:22 pm

alright.

i could not stay warm and dry at the same time if my life depended on it. i always layer up, sweat even harder and end up finding myself even colder.

What are some methods/techniques/tricks you guys have to prevent this.

reply

a thin layer or two of a wicking synthetic, and a jacket with lots of velcroed or zippered ventilation on top. works great.

Absolutely no cotton. Dress in synthetics and layer. If it's raining, you need obviously an outer layer that will repel the rain. Also listen to techno music if you're going to wear synthetics.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to spend a fortune to dress well. I've seen clothes that would work in thrift stores.

This is So-Cal. Just don't ride if it's one of the four days a year it rains. Otherwise, in terms of staying warm, nothing beats armwarmers. You can quickly roll them on or off, and very quickly regulate your temperature. Some might call it too much of a spandex roadie thing, but it's a must have.

I WEAR as few layers as I can stand, because about five minutes into the ride I'll be perfectly warm. Keeps the sweat down, which'll just make you colder later. But then I BRING a sweater, gloves, and a fresh shirt. I can put on the sweater or the gloves if I get just a little chilly, and if I get REALLY cold, then I change out of the sweaty, cold-making shirt and also put on the sweater/gloves

It's a little annoying to always have a shirt, sweater, and gloves with you, but it's less annoying than shivering all the damned time. A big bag helps.

Never wear layers. Then you'll just get used to being cold! Unless it's raining...

OK now I've heard everything! You do dress in layers HANDBONE. Do just about any search and they'll basically tell you two things. Wear synthetics and dress in layers.

Here's one link to get you started here

1. You're Russian. You shouldn't be having this problem. Stop being a fucking pussy.

2. Don't wear cotton, esp. as your first layer. Because I'm Russian, this rule doesn't apply to me, so do as I say and not as I do.

3. Fuck synthetics. A wool pullover as your first layer will keep you warm and dry, even if its wet (and snowing and 20 below, but hey, we're in LA). You can add an outer water/wind-repellent shell if you want.

Best layer I ever had was a smartwool shirt someone stole in Milan. You could wear it for a week and it wouldn't smell. I could wear it for a month and not mind. Synthetics hold smell, however you can find them cheap or free, whereas Merino wool is a little more difficult to find or considerably more expensive.

PS I found my wallet at that CVS in Culver. They said they had another but it was 5am and I wasn't thinking straight so i forgot to ask if it was yours. You may want to check it out.

PPS I still have the pants and I wear them when I think of you.

i'm mister wool jersey these days. it's amazing how a natural, low tech material like that does it right. keeps you warm and wicks away sweat. pull down the front zipper and the ventilation cools you. on the winter night rides i wore that and had a pull over heavy sweater and scarf in my bag for when it got really cold. it all worked.

this message was brought to you by the wool manufacturing association of new zealand.
