SHINY SPOKES??
Thread started by speedybrian2000 at 07.17.08 - 10:18 am

How do or what do I use to get my spokes shiny again? Is there anything that will make them look new again? I want them to sparkle in the sun!

reply

How nasty are they?

Are they rusted? If so, you can take some steel wool and small amount of any solvent and buff it out.

If they originally were a shiny chrome color, you gotta use some steel brush or wool to get the rust off and then wipe it.
Make sure you don't rub it too hard. Otherwise the chrome will be removed as well. Its usually pretty time consuming though.

Some spokes are rusted, not sure if those have hope. Other spokes are just plain dull... any more advice?

Short of rebuilding the wheel, that's about it.

Put aluminum foil on your spokes?

Hahaha! Aluminum foil is tempting, but the scraper bike look is too bling for me. I was also thinking of covering my entire wheel with spoke cards, then, who would care how shiny my spokes would be!

To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds wrap foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

Just found this tip online. Since I too, have sad, dull spokes, I think I'll try it out and report back!

try using Blue Magic...

it's actually used for polishing jewelry...but I've used it on aluminum and chrome and steel...

it takes a bit of elbow grease...but it does a great job of removing rust, without damaging the underlying good stuff...

For rusty spokes, first apply Naval Jelly. It's a chemical you can get from most hardware stores. It disolves rust, then you can just shoot it off with water. It's safe, it's even healthy for plants once it's reacted with the rust.

Once the rust is gone, get some wheel polish paste (Mothers is good) and apply it to a polishing/buffing wheel that you've chucked in your electric drill. Apply at low RPM (like almost not rotating) then polish at high speed. It's time consuming, but it works really well.

Something to consider: If your spokes rusted, then they're steel or some variation of metal that contains iron, so they'll rust again if not oiled, waxed, clear coated or kept dry.
