650 cc wheels
Thread started by tinycities at 07.26.08 - 10:40 pm

yes no maybe so?

not recommended?

increasingly having issues finding a frame that will fit me with 700ccs. [ i'm 5'0"/5'1" ] so im thinking it might be time to start acting like a woman and getting a smaller bike. no toe overlap?

whats the plus and minuses of 650 cc.. or should i just stick with 700 even though the frame geometry will be compromised?

ahhh.

reply

one c or two cs.. whatever.. right now i am tired.

nothing wrong with 650 cc's... some triathlon bicycles are made that way...

and there are a couple of companies that make women specific bikes/frames that have a 700 cc in back, and a 650 in front...just a little altered frame, but making the neck of the bike normal sized, but adding a shorter fork!

a company like that is Calfee...

problem with those frames is that they are rare, so they tend to be expensive!

unless you can find a female pro rider who's selling!

just my thoughts!

iro makes a bike that has dual 650s. kathryncupcake rides one.
650 = barspins!

You might want to think about going even smaller, to a 26" wheel. I ride a Surly Long Haul Trucker with 26's. They make their frames so that anything under 54cm (I ride a 50cm), drops to 26" wheels so that the geometry stays the same. I was skeptical at first, having ridden 700c for so long, but I'm very happy with my bike. My wheels also seem to be staying truer as a result of the smaller diameter

It just so happens that 26" is the common mountain bike diameter, so finding tubes and tires is cheap and easy.

No matter how hard Rivendell tries, 650c is just never going to be that common.

also if you don't mind used, keep an eye on craigslist/ebay for old centurion frames. they made one with a 700 in back a 26" in the front. at least I think that's what the dimensions are.

hmm. reason im asking as i saw a terry bike on craigslist but i decided i didn't want to have 2 wheel sizes.. i guess time to start looking at 650 bikes!

If you're small, 650's might be your only option less having a custom frame built for you that is your size *and* will fit 700s.

found a '91 terry bike for 300 bucks. it has all 105s but im assuming they're pretty outdated. good idea, bad idea? i dunno. two different wheel sizes is crazy [ the rear is 700, the front is 24"! ]

"650C Wheels No Different Than 700'c Wheels"

I don't know if anything in there is true or valid or anything else, but I bookmarked it a while ago.

I have a 42cm frame (really short),but I'm 5'1" or 5'2" and I use 26" wheels.
