i witnessed an incident in Culver City last night of what was pretty clearly police harassment, racial profiling, and selective overenforcement of bicycle light laws last night. So I thought it would be helpful to ridazz to AVOID a situation with excessively bored law enforcement by, first, getting a light! and second, going over all the other laws relating to bicycles and keeping yourself as legit as possible.



remember, the only thing worse or more annoying than a law is law enforcement!

Most of the cops in this town are pretty chill, but why give the 1% that hates cyclists an easy excuse to pull you over?

Either obey the law, or make an effort to at least appear that you're doing so, and exercise a modicum of common sense.

If you must drink, don't have obvious open containers. (As we found out today, a couple of open containers can spoil a whole party.) A water bottle of Gatorade and Vodka looks just like Gatorade, while a tallboy of Tecate in a small brown paper bag looks just like a tallboy of Tecate.

If stopping as a group, let through traffic pass. The more random citizens we get worked up, the more likely it is that one of them will call their local precinct and have a patrol car dispatched.

Keep an eye out for cops, and don't blow lights right in front of them. Cops, like everybody else, like to be treated with respect, and breaking the law right in front of law enforcement is a little disrespectful.
