Small Bike Wanted
Thread started by Lizzard at 12.16.08 - 4:54 pm

I am looking for a small road bike for a friend of mine who lives downtown. I don't have too much money to spend, and i am not sure the best size for her. She is about 5'2. Any of you ridazz got some small frames or bikes that would fit her? I am checking craigslist as well, but I think about 70% of those bikes are stolen.

MORE LIKE 70.00001 PERCENT.

This will be a mission for you. Small frame sizes aren't easy to come by.

go to junkyrustybikes on myspace. something like that. or ask TALLCANS... he knows. a friend of mine found one and she's only 5'0". try one between a 48-52cm.

Haha. I'm 5'2". A frame 42-49 is good, but it's all about stand-over height.

I have a nishiki prestige sport all suntour w/araya rims that I've been thinking about letting go. It's pretty fresh.
I'm 5'1 and its perfect for someone my size.

You really can't go by the claimed size anymore, it depends a lot on the builder-- a Felt 52 cm track frame has about the same cockpit size as a 46 cm bianchi. My gf has both and they both fit fine (and I've measured them pretty carefully).

You pretty much have to try them on, but for someone 5'2" there are a lot more decent frames available than 10 or so years ago.

Actually, that info above sounds pretty accurate.

a lot of years with a 5'2" gf who likes nice bikes and I've seen a lot of what's available in small sizes. She rode a tiny borrowed IRO with 650c wheels for the 508 and it was set up to fit exactly like the Felt 52(they don't allow aluminum in the fixed category), but they probably call it a 45 or something.

She also has a 49 cm steel traditional geometry track frame with 700c wheels, but the head tube size limits the saddle to bar drop. Compact aluminum really made small bikes with big wheels a lot easier....

with 650 wheels? Or a lugless compact geometry? I think the lugs are what limit the geometry on her steel bike.

She used to have a cannondale compact with 650s, but really likes the 700s because it puts her up higher in a paceline so she can see better.
