Bar-end shifters cable routing question

I'm rockin some bar-end shifters on a pair of drop bars and I'm about to tape them up with some awesome retro cloth tape.

My question...do I put the cable over or under the tape? I'm already running brake cable that I'm going to put under the tape. Is this just a matter of personal preference, or is there a "right" generally accepted practice?

i would wrap the cable under the tape.

on my touring bike w/ bar end shifters, the cables run under the tape for the drop portion, then come out from under the tape as the bars curve up from the drops to the brake lever area...lets them curve around gently to where they need to be.
