Ode to the 6th St Viaduct

There are some whom may have the right words to romanticize the passing of a bridge. I prefer to pay tribute to the death of a viaduct in pictures. For those who will soon lament the passing of an era and want a faded piece of it, I have organized a ride to pay tribute to our soon to be gone and dear to our bleeding hearts span of rotten concrete and rusted steel. It is here, over the Los Angeles River where nothing could symbolize our personal attempts to change our velo world more than a thing collapsing under its own weight. It is where east meets west and it is where we will ride to show our colors, fly our flags, spray our graffiti, slap our stickers, express our angst, happiness, disdain or perversion to a world that doesn’t know us and probably never will.

There is a slight chance though.

One where pictures alter our blurred windshield existence from inconvenient scofflaw rolling objects on the street to actual human beings just trying to get around on a bicycle safely. And if sometimes getting around in large numbers is the most visible way of illustrating our plight then that’s the way it is going to have to be in a city where “people who drive as if their sole purpose in getting behind the wheel is to avenge every wrong done them by man, beast or fate”1.

About the ride:

This is the 3rd segment of 7 in the Project. I deviate slightly from the confines of my past ride format to try something different. I will take bicycle portraits at the first official stop (6th St Viaduct Arches) rather than at the beginning of the ride. Here is your chance to stand tall with your bike, become infused with the past and get a spoke card to commemorate our changing world.

Meet up is at the LACMA Urban Lights Project at 3:30 PM on Saturday July 26th and ride at 4:00 PM. The pace will be an easy one. One refreshment stop will occur prior to our arrival at the bridge. The first actual stop is on top of the viaduct at the arches so if your preference is to meet us there for a photo op, please feel free.

For those who are going directly to the viaduct, be aware that an exact arrival time to the bridge is difficult to calculate and is largely dependent on the number of riders in attendance and length of time taken to gather refreshments at the pre-stop. It is theoretically estimated to be between 5:30 and 6:00 PM. The natural lighting will be optimal for photography at this time of the day. Following the photo opportunity / first stop we will ride more and there will be a second stop.

On the second stop we will project the photographs taken on the viaduct and re-screen the short movie I showed once during ride segment 2.0. Following this, the ride will come back on itself and end where it once began. Total distance will be approximately twenty plus miles so have a bike that is capable of making it at least that far.

Here is a link to the portraits that I have taken on segments 1 and 2 of 7:

Disclaimer: Note the above ride introduction is nothing more than a metaphoric description and should never be understood or misinterpreted as anything else. It is not a call to perform criminal acts, lewd conduct, riot, promote public intoxication, the open use of illicit drugs or the destruction to personal or public property. Do what you want as long as an innocent party or I am not perceived to be an accomplice to it. But, it is in very good form to always leave no trace, be respectful to everyone, have a good attitude and most of all have fun. Anything short of this will not likely be tolerated.
